Does anyone have any experience with the committee sending them recommendations of what to if they choose to reapply? And then actually getting an acceptance after doing it?

Here is what one of our SDN-ers says about his experience with the UTadcom recommendations. He/she was on the top 50 on the WL this year and just got in.

Last year I was wait listed and received bold typing suggesting that if I don't get in this year, I should look to retake the mcat if I choose to reapply. I ended up waiting all summer and not getting in. I retook the mcat and did 1 pt better but did not bring up my verbal like I needed to. So I don't think it had much of a positive influence. This year, I am wait listed again, but without any bold typing. I have looked to strengthen my application in other areas, but I think my mcat is still my downfall.

Anyways, as far as bold typing goes, who knows how the committee works. I guess calling and hoping for an honest answer is the only way to find out.

Hope this helps.

Well, I was told to take more science...to date I think I have 198 hours in science alone and almost all A's. Still wait listed...
My wife on the other hand was told to retake the MCAT. She did and did exactly the same. She got wait listed again, reapplied the next year and is now a third year med student with almost a full scholarship.
As a side note, my MCAT and GPA are better than hers, she got in I am wait listed.

I think I will call and ask Nelson Strother about what are the chances of being admitted at this point. Hopefully he will be there at the office after June the 29th next week. I got the feeling that having closure with this process is important for getting the peace of mind needed to be able to continue and persevere with the next app cycle.
I do not know about how others feel about this but I know that it works for me this way. At this point I would prefer to get that letter that ppl being on the 2nd half of the list got it last week. At least they know exactly where they are and they can move on easily.
Ughh....this whole waiting game is painful and ridiculous 🙁

Hey simodk,
Have you called Mr. Strother yet by any chance? If you would please keep us updated if you've heard anything new, that would be great. Thanks.

I haven't called Nelson yet bcz I wouldn't have found him in the office anyway. But as soon as I will contact the office I will let you know how things look like for some of us in here. Keep your fingers crossed :xf:

Okay, so I called Nelson today. He said that things seemed like they were grinding down to a halt. He did confirm that they were into the 50's on the wait list but he would not say how far-niether would he tell me my exact number on the list...top third is all I know but he did confirm that the top third was around 80...not a lot of help there. He said that last year they had 9 defer and in years past usually around a dozen defer. Today is the deadline for those who want to defer and someone did defer today. That's the good news, the bad news is that that 1 person makes 5 that have deferred this time around. This is half of what normally defer. He also said that last year they had about 5 people pulled off the wait list in July and none in August. Nelson said that at this point the only movement we are going to see is those who continue to defer for whatever reason (yes I know today is the deadline but Nelson said they were flexible if you had to defer) and if other wait lists at other schools "heat up" or if there were some emergency. So almost all the wind is out of these sails this year unless you are top 60, not "top 60 or so" I am guessing. This leads me to my final bit of news. I asked Nelson about the 60-65 number and he verified that that is the number of students offered acceptences not those who matriculate. What this means is that if you are not in the top 65 of the wait list you will probably not get in or even get asked. Usually by the time they have asked 60-65 students they have their full class of 165 confirmed. Last year they did get into the 70's but Nelson also confirmed that they just pulled the extra 15 students for the class size increase off the list and are counting them. What this means for the future is that if the wait list continues to exceed 240 you need to be in the top 1/4 to get in not the top 1/3. I hope this helps you all decide what's next for ya...as for me I'm movin on. 🙂

Sigh 🙁 Regardless, thanks a lot for letting us know VitalArmor.

Hey Vital Armor what are your stats?
I am honestly too ashamed to say...my mcat is less than 30 but my gpa's have been creeping up. I do not know what they are. I would say that both science and others are around 3.67-3.5 and my graduate gpa is around 3.92.

I think you may still have a chance. You are in the top 60 right? Nelson said they were in the 50's and he expects a movement of 4 or 5 in this month. Doing the math would put them almost all the way through the 50's by start of school. Also, since they had very few defer this year it means they will have more open slots next year. I hope you get in medgal🙂

Do you have a lot of clinical experience? It's so weird for you not to get an acceptance.

Presently I am a pharmacy technician. I spend a lot of time shadowing my best friend who is a physician. I spent a summer while he was a senior in residency shadowing him and diagnosing all his patients on the DSM-IV ( I have a degree in counseling and psychology). If he worked 24 hours so did I...if 36 hours so did I. I followed him in hospital and in clinic. So, yes I have both in patient and out patient experience.

So I spoke with Nelson again today to tell him I am reapplying-to my great shagrin. He said that one more person has deferred-otherwise "all calm on the western front." He also corrected himself. He had said that there were 4 or 5 called off the wait list in July last year, he was wrong there were only 2 (sorry medgal). The five were from the year before. I also spoke with him about deferring students. The less students who defer this year the less slots spoken for next year. So with the small number of deferals (sp?) we may expect more to come out of the wood work otherwise we have a better chance next year. So...when does the thread for 2010-2011 start?🙂

I am ready to hop onto next year's thread. Looks like my top second is far from being good enough this year. I know I need to work on my GPA, but I really don't know how to do that while working full time. Oh vell. Back to the drawing board.

top second? Did you mean 2nd third? Nelson told me they only make 60 to 65 offers from the wait list. So if the wait list is going to continue being 240+ people strong then you have to be in the top 1/4 to have a chance.

Yes. Did that sound like a hopeful post? I am aware that I will not get in this year. That's what "Back to the drawing board" means. Please note the overriding sarcastic tone of this message but please forgive me for it.

thanks, p head, for bringing this up. Yes, I did notice that myself. I was aware of the fact that I am not getting admitted this year, too. If you look at my most recent posts, I kept on reiterating that. In spite of it, he (still) uses a "very slight" sarcastic tone when he refers to my "60 or so" performance in one of his previous posts. I agree, it is far from being helpful...rather annoying..

I assure you both no insult was intended. Perhaps some of my own frustration is creeping into my verbage. I apologise for any offense. 😕

For those who do not already know the thread for UT application 2010-2011 has been started.

I too have just received my try again letter today...post marked july 13th so that's it. I was expecting it though. 🙁
