mmmcdowe: what is the waitlist like at columbia- how many put on the list, and how many usually get accepted off of it? Thanks so much!
Columbia has a sizable waitlist, more than half of interviewees. One third to one half of students are drawn from waitlist typically. Columbia strongly recommends correspondences, especially before may when lots of kids drop and a ton of movement occurs rapidly.
Still waiting for the snail mail...but nothing yet today (mid-Atlantic). Any chance that they didn't send out notifications by snail mail on one day (ie Tuesday, 3/1)?
(I saw the earlier comment about waitlist notifications being sent through today, but could that include acceptances, waitlists, rejections, etc?)
...getting anxious...too, too anxious

Hey everyone,
Just received the acceptance package today =). Parents read the letter to me over the phone, haha. I'm in the Los Angeles area, and frankly, I had lost hope after hearing that someone else in LA had already received his/her package yesterday. So to those of you out there who are still waiting, don't give up! There IS hope.
All the best!

I'm in Brooklyn and still haven't heard a thing. . .stupid USPS. Do I still have hope?
Rejection here in Colorado. Anyone else find the wording of the letter a little...odd?
got my big envelope today in CT!!!!! USPS sucks, I had totally lost hope.

There's a whole thread dedicated to it!
That thread is gold. I especially love the line from the consulting firm.
waitlisted in LA..
the wording of the waitlist letter was a tad odd too. i like how they put quotation marks around their own phrase "list of alternates".

That's actually the rejection letter for applicants who did not interview. I'm referring to the post-interview rejection. There's nothing condescending or offensive in it, I just find it kind of weird.
Anyway, good luck to the rest of you! Also, thanks for the input throughout the season, mmmcdowe, you've been awesome.
I'm going to go brush up on my knife-throwing skills and ready myself for the 2011 toe-wrestling championship so that I stand a better shot next year! 😀

Oh, and one last thing, mmmcdowe, PnSlove, and all soon-to-be Columbia students -
Please, PLEASE encourage the admissions team to bring their information-relaying methods into the 2000's. I realize that they like tradition, but for the love of god...
If they're really against it, at least do it for waitlists and rejections. They may think a physical letter is more dignified, but there is nothing dignified about applicants repeatedly walking to an empty mailbox day after day, watching as person after person gets accepted (eating away at your soul a bit more with each), only to finally have a rejection/waitlist creep its way to your house. It's antiquated, and bordering on torturous.

Rejected.
I actually didn't care much when I saw it. After meeting some of the other interviewees I just kinda knew then and there. But... it was awesome actually getting to interview.
Oh well, sucks that I'll be spending my next 4 years in SoCal closer to my bf 😀

Are you just saying that to make me feel better about not getting a letter yet? 😛
No, because I know how annoying it was for me last year, but if it does make you feel better then that is an added bonus. 🙂
Btw, I was waitlisted as was what seems to be over half of my class. Almost everyone I know got in off the waitlist. So I am sure this will be repeated at least ten times on this thread over the next few weeks but...do not lose hope if you are waitlisted and you do still have a real shot at getting in because this is just the way Columbia's admissions process works.

Ah, I didn't catch that. 😳
Nevertheless, the thread is an interesting read.

Just read that post. Brutal.

Thanks.
It varies every year and I don't know the exact number per year. Any numbers that I give would just be guesses based on the info I gave. I can guess 700-800 waitlistees and 75-100 waitlist offers, but there is no exact science that I am using to predict that.
700-800??? GOOD GOD MAN. I thought there were only ~1000-1100 interviewees begin with. How many acceptances are sent out to begin with??? Or does Columbia under-accept and see who wants off the waitlist most?It varies every year and I don't know the exact number per year. Called my parents yesterday and still hadn't received anything. DOH.
Same. Our house just didn't get any mail at all yesterday. Maybe it had something to do with living out in the sticks.Called my parents yesterday and still hadn't received anything. DOH.

Like I said, it's just a guess. I didn't put much thought into it, as far as I know its more than half (i.e at least 550).
Columbia accepts about 200 in the initial batch.
700-800??? GOOD GOD MAN.
I lol'd. MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY.
There is only one wait-list letter. Any differences you might see are probably non-existant, and certainly insignificant.
has anybody found out whether or not there is a difference between the waitlist status of "in the category of being very highly ranked" (sic) and a normal waitlist?
is there even a normal alternate list?
That's what PnS said. Did you get a waitlist letter?
Still no mail. I live in a city notorious for bad mail services, but I thought for sure something would be here by now... hopefully it's a waitlist!

Annnnnnd not accepted. Not sure if it's a waitlist or rejection since my dad only summarized it for me. Got the letter today though.
Congrats to those who were accepted and best of luck to everyone else!

Yeah, got the waitlist letter. it reads exactly like that, "very highly ranked" but "unable to offer you a place in the next class."
would love to know if anybody got any other forms of waitlist letters...
Reeeeeeejected. During my visit I kinda felt like Columbia wasn't the place for me, and apparently Columbia agreed. I would have loved a chance to visit again and maybe re-form my opinion. Such is life! They've gotta reject someone, right? 😎
Best of luck to those who are still waiting on a decision!

To follow-up, it was a waitlist letter. Mine was sent in a normal envelope not priority, so I'm not sure about other people getting waitlist notices in a priority envelope.
The letter itself is... odd. I guess it's an attempt to make it personalized, but it was just amusing. I'll scan it and put it up at some point.
Good luck!

Rejected today post-interview through snail mail. I live on the west coast. Good luck to everyone else!

Ha, I'm curious to read it.

I still havent heard anything (didnt get an interview)
It would have been nice to get a rejection letter...
