The attitude the dean was putting out this Monday made it sound like it was very very likely. As in, it was going to happen. He said the biggest protesters have been students who don't understand the process later.

He actually kept referring to it as if it was already a done deal. I would be very very very surprised if they didn't do it, especially after UF's transition to P/F and all of the top powers at the college of medicine wanting it.

So, besides P/F, what other changes do you think we'll see?

So excited! Got the email around noon today. Scheduled for December 3rd. PM me if anyone else is going that day!

Can anyone comment on the interview format, date, or types of questions? I appreciate the help 🙂. I love that they are BIG on helping underserved communities.

:luck: everyone!

DocTraveler,
I interviewed here back in the end of September. You have two, one hour long faculty member interviews who will then present your application to the admission's committee the Tuesday after your interview. The week after they make a decision and e-mail or call you. Both my interviewers were really nice and more conversational than anything, although they do have your amcas there already marked up and highlighted haha. I really felt like they were trying to get to know me and where my motivation comes from which seemed to be more important than my stats. You also want to know why you fit the mission statement of the school in some form or another, but don't lie....Later you have a tour given by some med students and then you eat lunch with them, they are not on the admissions committee so they said to ask them whatever you want. If you have an afternoon interview you do the tour and lunch first. Good luck, just be yourself, it will probably be one of the most relaxed interviews you do.

Thanks for the info and advice! And congrats on the acceptance! I can't wait until I have one of those, but it seems it will not be for a while as I just started interviews this past Monday. And I agree about not lying, but I know exactly why I want to go here and how my goals fit with the mission of their school. Maybe I will see you next year! :xf:

This is my first post and its sure to be a memorable one. Just received the email i've been waiting for.

WELCOME TO THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE!!!

Florida State here i come, I cant wait to head up there this summer !

Secondary completed 9/7, it's been two months now and still no word from this school. Wondering if this is typical.

CONGRATS!! Join the class of 2015 Facebook group haha:laugh: I think there is only 3 members in there right now..

So does anybody know how many people have gotten accepted already? Also, how many people from the wait-list get selected? I have friends who are high on the list and am hoping they get in.

complete 08/19/2010, IS 31N, 3.85, update sent on 11/03/2010. Still waiting for an invite. Anyone with similar story?

So, besides P/F, what other changes do you think we'll see?

They will finish the mezanine level by January, which will have offices, student club/activity area, some private study areas, a "wellness center" (which will probably just have an open area and some treadmills or something).

The dean really wants to knock down a wall and extend the space where the cafe is, but he will only do it if Aramark (the food people on campus) promise to have better hours, more food selection and help throw down for some nicer furniture. He also said he wants a cut of the profits generated from that facility. I'd put this project on the lower end of the probability scale, but there is a push for it.

There will be a massive 100+ inch flat screen t.v. mounted in the atrium with a PA system with various pictures/movies playing involving the college of medicine, as well as the capability to live broadcast anything happening in the auditorium. There will be another flat screen mounted near the security desk with constant updates of what events are happening at the COM for that day as well

There is a push to get away from getting the vast majority of our money from the state legislator. They are also looking at ways to create better scholarship funds and grants, but there is a bit of worry about having to increase tuition a little bit because of all of the current cuts.

I predict a fairly significant curriculum change coming within the next few years. It may not be until you are third years, but they really want a more integrative curriculum, as well as to deload the 2nd year a little. As it currently stands, MS1 is great since it is nice and light, which allows you to get involved with everything, but then second year rolls around and you just get hammered. There is talk about moving the health issues class to first year (which is where I think it should belong anyway).

In addition, I think they really want to focus more on the systems oriented approach than discrete classes. Many people like the idea of discrete classes, but it really does make it a pain to tie information together as you go. The dean was saying that rather than having to recall pharmacology for one aspect, physiology for another, pathology for another and biochem for another, it seemed logical to have that full integrated together for a particular disease/condition.

On the clinical side, aside from increasing research, they are trying to get some residency programs together. We are currently affiliated with a peds and obgyn residency in Pensacola and a family medicine residency in Tallahassee. There will be an internal medicine residency starting up in Tallahassee. I've heard there is a general surgery residency in the pipeline, although I'm not sure of where.

Rotations, I haven't heard of too much change so far. I wouldn't be surprised if they announced an affiliation with somewhere like Ft. Myers within the next 5 years. Right now we have the CDCS system, which is used to (painfully) log all of our patients and what we did. They are in the midst of a redesign, although it is moving at a very slow pace. I'm actually part of the committee for that (supposedly..haven't heard anything) because of my previous experience and interest in technology integration/implementation. The new system aims to be much more efficient. I don't know what their plans are for it, but I'm going to push for a stand alone application that can run on multiple smartphone platorms, as well as iPad and what not. The current entry time can take a couple minutes per patient if you're looking for something particular. My personal goal is to get that to less than 20 seconds once trained if you omit special notes for each entry, which is more than reasonable for the things they offer. I also want it to be a smarter system that lets you organize/create templates or entries in a way that is most fitting for you. If you are on your ob/gyn rotation, you don't need to sift through selections for your psych rotation and if in the rare situation where you do need that entry, you can still get to it.

Hope that helps. I'm sure I left off some things. We are also pushing for lots of stupid little things like better quality lecture recordings and mics that don't cut out during class....and possibly new printers.

Obviously those middle school typing classes paid off....

Well either way I guess we'll know in time and hopefully it will go through.

I think its funny that a student would protest such. Are they that competitive with each other that the 2 years that are not the most important to residency positions need to be a competition with each other?

Or do they just feel that it would motivate them more? I wonder.

People feel like it hurts their residency chances and they think people won't work as hard, both of which have already been proven to be false. It also shifts things like AOA to clinical performance, which it should probably be anyway since the first two years don't really translate well to your perfomrance on the wards.

The people complaining most are usually the ones that have all A's or something similar since they all of a sudden feel like it is unfair for them to put in that much work and get the same grade as someone else who didn't. To me, this lacks the foresight that you can't replace two years of hardwork when it comes to reviewing for the boards. Some people are also just fueled by the grades more than the knowledge. I've found myself being a little too much grade-centric as this semester progressed simply because I am doing really well and would love to get A's in all my courses, but I still focus more on integration of material than factoid questions.

Hey everyone!
I have an interview Friday and I'm super excited

I was reading the interview advice on the FSU website and I saw as a possible topic:

  • Current issues in health care
You may be asked to discuss a controversial issue or situations dealing with ethics or professionalism in health care. Be aware of current issues and recent debates in the health field.

I was wondering if anyone has gotten questions on these topics? Or has any other advice? Anything would be appreciated!!!!! 🙂

Congrats! We did talk about health care issues in one of my interviews, but surprisingly it was the other way around. I asked a question and listened to my interviewer gripe about the problems.

They're not going to grill you on the issue. Just make sure you have a basic idea of the present situation of health care in the US, so if the conversation comes up, you'll have something to talk about. An hour goes by quickly, so you may not even touch on the subject.

As far as ethics go, if you are asked a tough question, answer the question confidently and stick to your guns. Ethics questions are more about how you answer than specifically answering correctly.

You made it through the hard part so relax! Best regards!

I think they are also looking to see if you have thought about your future and the issues that might present itself if you are a doctor. If you have an opinion on the major health issues ahead of your interview it shows you gave thought about your future in medicine already and are making a well thought out decision about entering the field. Also try to stay consistent with ethical questions I think, if you are all over the place its seems you never thought of it before and are just winging it. They didn't drill me with anything difficult in my interview, just like what i thought was the biggest issue in health care and then we talked about that for a while.

Thank you for the reply and the congrats (I'm really excited!!!)! Sounds completely doable! As far as the interview goes I've really only heard favorable things about FSU. This is my first interview though so the nervousness is definitely there!

Thank you to you as well Jag! The whole "making sure you thought ahead" makes sense. There just weren't too many bullet points for possible topics so I just wasn't sure what my "expert level" on these topics should be 😕
Looking forward to Friday! Go Noles! 👍👍👍

I had ethical questions. It just depends on your interviewer. There usually isn't a right or wrong answer. It is just a matter of seeing how you process it. Just remember, "patient-centered care" and apply that to just about everything. If they ask for your personal opinions during the interview then fire away, but the patient's needs and desires always take precedent over your personal opinions.

I agree with MossPoh. We mainly discussed my experiences shadowing and volunteering... anything that dealt with patient care. My research didn't even come up. My interviewers really wanted to know about the types of patients I interacted with during work and shadowing.

Mosspoh... help?!

Similar post as Topdoc from a few days ago...

Complete 08/20, IS 30, 3.75 w/ strong finish. Also, a re-applicant, high hold from last cycle but didn't make it.

I talked to Dr. Graham Patrick about how to improve my app for this cycle. He told me I've done everything right and that not as many people declined their acceptance as in previous years. He said to just keep doing the same things. I improved many parts of my app anyways, and I guess I just figured I would have a significantly greater chance to get in this cycle, being a re-applicant. True or no? Also, is it too early to send a letter of intent? I'm pretty sure I would shut everything down if I got in here simply b/c of how awesome it was when I visited!

Advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kyle

There are few people that are as honest and direct as Dr. Patrick. If he told you that, then he knows best and it will probably happen at some point. I'd hold off a LITTLE bit longer. I don't know how far out they are scheduling interviews, but the next 5 weeks is a little bit of a wind down period before break I think. So, they have like 10ish days of interviews left for the semester? If you don't hear anything within the week after thanksgiving, a letter stating your interest in the school and reasons why it is your top choice MAY be acceptable. You don't need to sound needy or desperate. Just a well written letter why you are interested with a concise reason why you would be a good fit for the school. I alway viewed letters as a kind of hail mary, so I try to hold those off as long as possible.

Oh, and out of full disclosure. I'm a big fan of Dr. Patrick. Really nice guy. Tough interviewer, tough question writer but he is truly one of those people who wants students to succeed and he never blows smoke with questions. If he told you all that then I'd believe it to be true.

We are having a lot more people taking acceptances here. I'd love to say it is because we are such an awesome school but it is also highly probable that competition has increased dramatically the last few years and kids are more apt to take an acceptance and run with it.

My big fear is that the "any medical school will do" type attitude may lead to a more pessimistic and disconnected class.

Under review starting 8/24. OOS. 3.5 ugrad gpa; 3.95 grad gpa; 31 S; Extensive work with disadvantaged (homeless; lived in rural African village).

Haven't heard anything. Wondering if anyone is in the same boat.

Well MossPoh, most of the applicants who I know from my school chose FSU because they loved the program, as did I.

I felt that the College of Medicine was pretty good at selecting people who seem like their ideal student, so there may be a higher percentage of students who are applying to FSU that really want to go there... hopefully.

For the record, I have enough empathy for two people =) and I intend on giving my best as a medical student. I'm sure the rest of my class will be the same way.

Thanks, Mosspoh! And I think it may be the vibe/students that are causing less people to decline an acceptance at FSU. I've interviewed at 3 other schools between this cycle and last and didn't leave feeling excited about any of them.

We can only hope that is the case. 😉 Although, all you guys could be complete jerks next year and it wouldn't matter to me since I will be in a different town. 😛

This thread is getting quiet again. That bothers me.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share an experience that may or may not be unique to FSU.

In your second year, there is a required "medicine and behavior" class that is basically a catchall along with health issues for everything that isn't covered in the other classes. It tends to have a slight psych spin to it, but that depends on the unit.

Anyway, one of our requirements is to attend an AA meeting and write a paper about the experience. After you get done with MS1, you kind of wish all those things were done with. I went to mine last Friday and it was a fantastic experience. The meeting I attended was supposed to be closed, but they asked at the beginning if it was alright that I stayed and nobody disagreed. Each story took a bit of a healthcare spin on it and was reflective of how the physicians/counselors treated them and how they treated the physicians. One man brought over the AA book and had a selected chapter written by a doctor in the 1930s. He explained everything to me. Who the man was. Why the essay was in the book. All that stuff. He then handed it to me and let me read the book and explore.

After everything, a bunch of people came up to me and shook my hand, thanking me for coming to the meeting and giving me their personal insights and stories. I stayed for a good 45 minutes after the meeting was over talking to them...on a Friday night.

Now, as the people who know me in real life are aware, I am anything but a touchy feely talk about emotions type of person. I was really kind of peeved I had to attend the thing. At the end of the day, it was a fantastic experience and I learned a tremendous amount.

The moral of the story is that if you choose to come here for school, you will have to do things that seem pointless or a waste of time. You will become agitated that they rob you of study and personal time to do these things, BUT they truly are worthwhile experiences in hindsight regardless of what field you're interested in. Talking with those people put my mediocre test performance into perspective. It is pretty friggin difficult to dwell on getting B's on some exams after listening to a man's fall from grace.

Just interviewed this past Friday. I am a re-applicant from last year...was on the high hold list up until that very last day and didn't get in sadly enough. Hoping to hear some good news in two weeks! Does anyone know about how many students they accept right away (2 weeks post interview after the committee meets?) I am just curious if anyone knows...or if it just varies from group to group. Having to be on the waitlist until June 1st again would be hard...but I am just happy to have interviewed. Good luck to everyone else in this crazy process! I LOVED FSU....again! 🙂

Anyway, I just thought I'd share an experience that may or may not be unique to FSU.

Good post👍 Thanks for choosing SDN for your study breaks; b/c you're not only helping the people who post regularly, but also all the other hundreds of lurkers out there.

I interviewed a couple weeks ago and am waiting for my answer. If I get in:xf:, you all will be seeing as many posts from here as you can handle.

Yes, MossPoh has been a huge help providing info to us ignorant folks about FSU. I really do appreciate your help and inside info, MossPoh.

See if I ever give you any of my migraine medications now.
Whoa, are you serious about this?? I'm out of imitrex and can't get to thagard until Monday. Pretty please help out a lowly first year who has a test on Friday and will invariably get another migraine before then... 🙂

to everyone else - feel free to PM me with questions. I only check this thread once in awhile, but would be happy to help! I 😍 FSU COM.

I think I have one maxalt-mlt left. Text me at school and I will get it to you. If you don't use by the time you get more then I would probably like it back simply because I will invariably have a migraine now that I don't have any of my free samples left. 😛

And thank you other people for kind words and all. I have about 4 websites I check anymore and my neuroticism hasn't cut off on here for now.

My big fear is that the "any medical school will do" type attitude may lead to a more pessimistic and disconnected class.

Not true about our class, I talked to a few people about it and they chose to be here because of the nice environment and atmosphere that they saw at their interview. Some did get off waitlist at other school but FSU was still their top choice. I was impressed at my interview!

I guess the secret is out on how awesome FSUCOM is so people dont want to decline their acceptance 😀

P/F rocks!!! and it pretty much guarantee for c/o 2015 (just need head FSU approval, which I dont see why not), P/F for c/o 2014 should be in affect for 2nd year as most students are in favor of it (>80%) and the committee is in favor of it anyway (regardless of the student vote, according to my advisor)

I just asked to join!! 😀
But I suggest letting people freely join so that more current 1st year and 2nd can join without asking!!

We will flood your group with stuff like how the 2013 flooded our 2014 group:laugh:

I tried but i think its a new facebook group thing where you make it an open group but you still have to approve people in. If this isn't true we can fix it, but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

No class would actually admit to it. 😉 I have noticed a slight change in the personality of the classes each year. It has been subtle, but it is still there.

There has been quite a bit more drama this year than the last few with a few things that had the potential for dramatically more serious consequences than what happened. A few were/are known and others were kept (for the most part) in the admin level.

Nothing to say it still hasn't gotten to my feared level yet. I feel like there are some natural safeguards with the structure of the school to prevent many malignant gunner personalities from choosing here over other schools though.

One thing that has kind of disappointed me is the lack of communication between our classes. My class talked a lot about wanting it to be a better experience than we had our first year. From what I've encountered, it is pretty much the same. Certain people in each class are friends with similar groups in the other class and then there are almost obligatory invites to events, but that is about it. Part of it involves scheduling, since we are almost completely opposite in that domain. I rarely even see most of you guys and I'm there from 7 a.m. till at least 9 p.m. nearly every day. I feel like it'd be beneficial to try to mix things up and have introductions between classes when we first get there rather than mingling for 30 minutes over free chik-fil-a at an interest group meeting.

It also doesn't help that they really pile the load second year, so I rarely have the will to do things when I do have time. 😛

I feel ya, Gator8. I'm in the same boat but pre-interview desperately waiting for an int... 🙁 I'll say a prayer for you

Alot of people dont study on campus, many of them go home or whatever. A few are here all the time and we have found our study spot so you wont see us.

Beside from a few second year, I noticed that most second years just keep to themselves (at these chick-fil-a meeting), so its hard to approach you guys.

Yea, I know it is studying and a little on both sides. I was kind of blaming my class for not trying a little harder. I try to talk to you guys when I see you but it is often viewed with suspicion like I'm offering pox blankets or something. 😛
I feel part of the problem is also there really isn't a good place to mingle. The Starbucks is nice, but it isn't exactly the most inviting atmosphere to sit around and socialize. I also wish we had more interactions with the biomedical sciences people.

Something that would have been kind of fun is to have an all out lc olympics between everyone. What happened last year was that there was a very subtle "us" versus "them" kind of thing. It wasn't like we were openly hostile and I do have friends in the class, but there was an odd energy with some people.

I am guessing it will always be that way just by the nature of our schedules and courseloads and it isn't anything I lose sleep over. Just be nice to know more of you guys better!

I am getting a little anxious!!! Was complete end of august, with decent stats, still no invite.

Hey, guys:

I received an interview invite today for next Friday, 12/3 (afternoon session since morning session was booked).

Hopeful to see/meet fellow SDNers there!

Samesies....See you there! Although I have the morning session.

Hey everyone,

I'm currently an MS3 at FSU. I hope the application process hasn't been too hectic. I'd be glad to answer any questions you guys might have about interviews, tallahassee, regional campuses, etc. Have a great thanksgiving!

are medical students allowed to be classified as dependents for tuition purposes? I graduated from a Florida highschool and then went out of state for college. Now im coming back to go to FSUCOM. My parents still live in florida and they support me so I am a dependent. But I am not sure if medical students are allowed to claim dependency for tuition purposes. What are you all claiming on the form. I would call the office but there all closed through the weekend

thank you,
thats what I thought
Its just I saw something on the website that said anyone pursuing a graduate or doctoral degree is classified as an independent for tuition purposes

If you don't mind me asking. When was your application complete?
I have been complete/Under-review since 9/21....nothing yet...

Well its not the status as in medical students or ugrads so much as it is that the law is based on age. If you are under 25 years of age you can claim dependency on your parents but as soon as you are 25 or 26 you will lose that privlege of being able to claim such for residency purposes.

Assuming you are 21 or 22 you would be considered a dependent.

I was born in Florida but raised in a different state. My parents moved down to Florida again once I graduated high school. I went to undergrad in PA. I got my new driver's license in Florida a year later. I did 2 years of postbacc premed at FSU before med school. I'm 26 now and have instate tuition.

A lot of people here have instate tuition rates despite not having parents in the state, so residency for tuition purposes may be pretty relaxed. I don't recall there actually being much TO getting instate. I gave a permanent address, my driver's license number and maybe a tax return or something.
