What do you mean by passing? Like passing with an A or can I still be matriculate if I make a B here or there?

I have this terrible ongoing nightmare about how if I don't make A's, I'm gonna get a letter saying that I'm gonna have to reapply =/ "Thanks for trying, but better luck next time..."

I'm afraid of that too. I've been getting mostly A's in undergrad and a couple of B's, but this semester I'm staring at a C in one class. Is getting a C grounds for rescinding an acceptance? What about getting mostly B's, 1 A, and C when I have been getting mostly A's every semester?

I submitted a bit later in the cycle because I was terrified of my first MCAT (as I should have been.) I submitted AMCAS anyway and my FSU secondary was complete 9/15 and under review 9/17. I took the MCAT again on 9/11 and I'm sure I was placed on hold til score was out. I got a 28P which I know isn't stellar but was better than the first. I didn't get the score back until October 12th though.

From dedicated lurking, I noticed the average interview invite time from complete time seemed to be about a month-ish....my question is if I'm lucky enough to get an interview, would the interview be.....
A month from 9/15 (in which case hopefully it'd come soon) or more like
A month from when received new MCAT score 10/12?

GPA: 4.0 BCPM and 3.85 AO

I was a FSU undergrad and I'd love to go here! 😍 Super nervous and hating the MCAT and its spiteful killing of my application (how late it made app and score - double whammy) everyday I don't see an interview invite.

FSU is the only ranked football team in Florida. Doak 11/27/2010!!!!!

Usually the acceptance letter says the requirements. Most places, it is just passing. So, whatever is required to get your degree. B's are nothing. Even a C is nothing. D's and F's are the problem. I do remember one kid a few years ago on SDN who got accepted to Johns Hopkins or some school and then just stopped doing work. Got a few D's and they took away his acceptance.

Ugh still not done with the secondary cuz of the big essay but hopefully with my bro's help it will be done this week. I'm praying he gets to helping review my essays once and for all so I can move on to the next step.

But how goes it for everyone else in here. At least its just the big essay remaining. And maybe will add a bit more about what I'm doing currently elsewhere and some stuff to the other stuff here and there.

Cant believe that you havent finish the application yet. 🙂

Good luck! I wouldnt mind seeing you as a nole!!!

Accepted!!!!!! BOOYAH!!!!! I'll look forward to seeing you guys in class next summer!

In spring there is an open house. If you wanted, you could really come anytime. If you want to sit in on lectures or whatever, then it isn't a big deal especially if me or someone else is with you.

congrats to all who have been accepted!!! i cant wait for that day (if it comes...) 🙂

I submitted my secondary on 10/7 and now Im just waitingggg miserably :scared:

stats are: cGPA:3.8 sGPA: 3.83 31N Fl resident

Unless you kick puppies or beat up homeless people....or kick puppies while simultaneously beating up homeless people, you should get an interview. It may end up being in January though. We are kind of reaching that cusp where a lot of schools have interviews booked up for a while. I have no idea how far in advance they schedule though.

Thanks for the advice! Yea, applying alittle earlier would have sped things up for me, but I retook the MCAT on Sept. 11 and raised my score from a 27 to a 31, so I guess it was worth the wait? Hopefully it pays off... 🙂

Has anyone scheduled an interview recently? If so, when was the earliest you were allowed to schedule?

Thanks!

Few questions for anyone that can answer:

1.) I know the acceptance rate after interview here is around 50%, but what is the acceptance rate for those that interview early (i.e. before November). It's got to be higher, right?

2.) I know FSU kinda de-emphasizes research, but if I wanted to do research, would opportunities be readily available?

Thanks to anyone who can answer! 🙂

I don't think there is an actual number for the first question. Numbers feel inflated but it is also a pretty self selected group. Last year they accepted a ton early on and then everyone was taking the acceptance (more than anticipated at least) so the second half of the season had a lot more waitlisting going on. It wouldn't surprise me if they kept a little more of an eye out for that this year.

For question 2, yes there is research available. I did some during the summer. There are people that do bench science stuff and there is clinical stuff if you are active about it. Most people don't have great blocks of time to really do it though. I haven't even had solid time to run over and get data from my research this summer. If you're looking for surgery research or something you may have to try harder. I do know that the big urology clinic here does have some clinical trial stuff going on. I'm not sure about other practices though.

The dean is actively trying to get some research programs up to par. We have strong neuroscience and strong rural/underserved/geriatric type stuff, so those are where the major focus is going. I did MS clinical stuff during the summer that was a bunch of stuff put together. The biggest benefit was that my neuro and funduscopic exams are pretty rock solid now.

I appreciate the responses MossPoh!

I understand that there is very little time to do research during the school year so is it normal for students to only do research during the summer between MS1 and MS2?

I won't say any of it is "normal". There are people that do research all the time. MS1 is much more doable than MS2. Most of the people I know who did REAL research did it during the summer, mainly because you can get paid. But, just like most medical schools, the majority of the students don't do research or maybe something easy like an abstract or lit review.

As far as people who did research on the level of writing an IRB, having patient recruitment, doing the physical exams, doing the experiment stuff and maintaining the data..not many people do all that stuff. I did all the documentation for the IRB approval, but it was more of a practice thing since we had an official writer help out. I still know how painful it is to do though.

It must be great to get an acceptance this early in the cycle. How long does the FSU admission council usually take to make a decision? Seems like they look at the pool about every two weeks.

complete since 8/19, gpa 3.85, mcat 31P. Does any one with similar stats gotten an invite?
Fl. resident.

No invite, complete 9/28, gpa 3.65, mcat 30M, FL resident. I have been hoping to hear something soon, but now I'm a little concerned.

They can be a bit erratic with interview stuff. I wouldn't worry or call for a couple more weeks. It is fairly acceptable to call and ask about your status then. I called a school and asked what my status was because I only had a certain amount of travel funds, but wanted to interview there. Whether by chance or not, I got an interview invite the next week.

Complete 8/18, gpa 3.97, MCAT 36, FL resident...not invite.
Invites from 8 other schools including the Mayo Clinic...but not FSU.
Do they hate me? Lol.

Sometimes, if your numbers are TOO good then they really aren't convinced you'd rather go there over some other schools, especially if you don't have any previous exposure/interest into rural/underserved care. (I don't know if you do or don't, but just in general) I've heard several times that they rather accept a first generation college grad from a rural area with a 3.4 and 28 over a kid with upper middle class upbringings from Miami, Tampa, etc. with a 3.9 and 35+ because they know that first generation kid is statistically more likely to return to a similar area once done with school. We also have a guy that is big on stats and his analyses keep showing how little the MCAT matters as long as you score above something low (>21 I think).

I wouldn't say they "hate" you, but they may not be convinced you'd pick them over someone like....mayo.

Haha no I know, I try not to take it personally. And in my defense, I'm a poor little girl with a single mom...so it's not that. Just gotta wait and hope they change their mind!

If you truly are interested then I might send a formal letter stating your interest in the school with legit reasons why and possibly why you'd prefer the school over many others.

Been pretty quiet around here. A little too quiet.

Haha, how do you have time for SDN during second year? Lol. Btw is there stuff for undergrads to come and participate in at the COM during the semesters... Like on Fridays or the weekends. I only live 3 hours away and it'd be nice to hang out at the med school a little bit.

We really don't have too many normal activities with undergrads. We do have tailgates and parties and stuff. We usually don't care if people come from outside the class as long as they come with someone from the class. I'm not sure what the individual interest groups do though.

I have very very little time, but no human can possibly head down study all day without doing other things. I also have an iphone, so if I'm sitting in a worthless part of class then I will just check then too.

It is a test week now, so I'm studying a few more hours a day than usual. I was here from 7:30 a.m. till midnight and got back at 7:30 a.m. again this morning if it makes you feel any better. I also put in about 15 hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Just got accepted. Super pumped. I had a great time at the school. Couldn't imagine going anywhere else.

They are moving to P/F next year??!! I'll find out tomorrow whether or not I'm accepted here:xf:

How does that affect GPAs? Or class rankings?

All research indicates that gpa really doesn't matter during the first two years and doesn't affect residency chances. Schools do it differently but some maintain the percentages others rely on third year grades, board scores, etc for aoa. It just changes by school.

It has been shown to reduce student stress and to allow one to focus on learning the material best. The dean mentioned he thought it would also reduce the amount of "trivia" type questions created by professors to distinguish between the a and b students. Which is still a bit of a problem. I try to focus on major things and can nail every important question but then will get a B+ because I didn't know a random statistic on a PowerPoint slide or some other factoid type question.

Also, it enhances teamwork between students.

No changes in board scores have been found either.

They are in the midst of designing a more integrated curriculum and figuring out what to do with classes like health issues, which should be a first year course realistically.

Better said than my iPhone reply.

You other guys are in trouble now. She may as well change her name to miss gunneroo.

HAHAHA yeah right, dork! I'm the least gunner-ish person you've ever met and you know it  Sharing is caring!

They are still just TALKING about pass/fail. Not definite yet. Sheesh, spreading all kinds of rumors, MossPoh... 🙂

I really really really REALLY hope the motion to move my class to pass/fail next year passes. Oh so much.

Congrats! How long after the interview did you get your decision? Enjoy!

Thank you, ucladoc!! A large committee of people (including your 2 interviewers) meet on the Tuesday following that Monday's and the previous Friday's interviews. At that meeting, your interviewers present you to the committee and it seems that they must make some acceptance decisions then (but I can't be sure!). The following Tuesday a small group of people make the final decisions and you get your official acceptance (and YES I said acceptance...sending positive thoughts your way! 👍) that Wednesday. Have you interviewed yet? Best of luck :luck:

The attitude the dean was putting out this Monday made it sound like it was very very likely. As in, it was going to happen. He said the biggest protesters have been students who don't understand the process later.

He actually kept referring to it as if it was already a done deal. I would be very very very surprised if they didn't do it, especially after UF's transition to P/F and all of the top powers at the college of medicine wanting it.
