You can also request student housing. They usually send an email out to us asking if anyone can keep a pet pre-med. I'd recommend trying if you get a chance. During my interviews, the place I did that always came off much better to me. They told you everything about the school and gave a personalized tour. You also get the chance to see how much of the happiness is a front, which at FSU usually isn't...unless it is a test week.

MossPoh, you can keep me as a pet... I'll even bring my own kennel. Haha. I promise that I'm house-trained... except when I get excited, which may be quite often if I get invited for an interview.

If I get an interview, I'd be grateful for a med student's view of Tally and the college, for sure.

Ugh, the wait is miserable...

The happiness is real, we all love it here!!

I'd say 75% of the time it is very loving. Those test weeks can be pretty miserable. You'd be hard pressed to find a school where students weren't stressed before an exam though.

Just wanted to stop by and show FSU some love 😍 I'm OOS submitting my 2ndary today. Thanks for all the advice MossPoh and Sammich

The EDP is pretty awesome if you know you want to go to FSU and meet the general averages. While I'm sure there are people who were rejected post interview, everyone I knew whom applied through EDP got in. Some of them had to retake the MCAT and get a higher score, but they still got in.

I did not apply EDP because I thought my stats weren't in the area and I applied to about 32 schools.

To the mods and those still filling out secondaries. There is an additional essay termed "Self-critical analysis." I am not sure why it is has not been mentioned earlier. Following is the prompt:

Write a critical analysis of your personal and scholastic qualifications for the study of medicine and the realization of your professional ambitions (limit to 500 words)

MossPoh, what are the general avgs for EDP, if you don't mind me asking?

Is anyone else having a hard time deciding what to write about their family?

Is it going to look really bad if these essays are really short?

As long as the essay answers the prompt in some cohesive manner, I don't think length matters. I, on the other hand, am having a difficult time with the self-critical analysis.

No clue. The averages don't really matter. They have a different scoring system than many medical schools and things like the MCAT aren't always weighed as heavily. They rather accept a first generation college graduate from rural Florida with a 3.4 and a 27 than the kid with doctor parents who grew up in Miami and has a 3.6 and a 31 with all else held equal.

For acceptance, if you have a 3.3+ and a 26+ then you will stand a shot of at least getting an interview. EDP tends to be a little higher for most schools.

The essays are used more for discussion points during an interview than anything else.

The self-critical essay is easy. It is the most common job interview question on the planet. "What is your greatest weakness?"

So this essay should be how an adcom would view my file, pointing out both negatives (not harping on these and emphasizing what I have learned) and positives (how I plan on applying it to my medical education/ how this experience has helped me become qualified for the practice of medicine)? Also, would this be the place to address lapses in undergraduate education, such as poor grades during a semester?

Thanks for all your help :biglove:.

If it applies to the weakness then include stuff. I can't see the secondary to see where would be best to put stuff. When I did it back in the day I would see if it had a specific section asking for an explanation, if not, I'd add it to the extras comment. I had particularly strong weaknesses but oftentimes, people freak out more than they should. They usually ask the "why" type questions during interviews.

MossPoh, thanks for all of your insight. Its been a lot of help and reassurance. Best regards to you for this upcoming year!

Thanks to Sammich too!

Is anyone having trouble with the "Course Requirements" page? I entered all mine yesterday, and put in semicolons between courses that I entered in the same box (like it says to), but when I log in today the program spaced it out so that there's one entry per box! I have to list my science classes and labs separately, plus multiple english classses, so I don't know what to do.

^^^ that happened to me, it was because I was using firefox and ignored the warning. Try using Internet Explorer if you are using firefox like me.

I was just looking at UCF's forum and it looks like some people were already invited for interviews. Does anyone know when FSU usually starts the process (regular admission)?

People may get invites before the end of September, but their focus is on EDP for a while.

Though my application hasn't changed numerically from last year, and they will likely wait for the first semester's grades in my SMP, I am finally submitting my in-state secondary today. The difference? Submitting early I hope, and this years experiences 🙂

I also had a hard time with this question and chose to write it from the perspective of all the decisions I've made that has been questionable, and what I've learned from them. Your greatest strengths tend to be your greatest weaknesses. 😛

Good luck to everyone!! I hope they like my changes!!!

How do I do a critical analysis of my scholastic qualifications? Don't get me wrong--I'm not the smartest person in the world, and I had no problem criticizing my "personal qualifications", but I have near perfect grades and a really good MCAT, so I don't know what to write. Blah.

You go through your scholastic accomplishments...A critical analysis doesn't have to be all the negative things. But hell, I've gotten A's in classes I know I should've done more in regardless, or you could talk about the evolution of your study habits and how you applied them to successful grades/mcat.

Don't overcomplicate things. Just talk about your friggin schooling! 😛

Agree with the bolded part... in addition to explaining WHY my Biochem/Physics grades weren't "perfect", I definitely talked a lot about how my study habits have evolved, how I personally had to change for those effects to be successful, and how it's currently helping me with my SMP - and paying off. I even have different tactics for different types of classes! You could talk about how hard you worked to get those grades, knowing that things don't come "easy" and require effort/dedication/hard work...

I called today and asked about additional letters, they said that once your secondary is completed with committee/3 standard letters and photo, the application in put in line - she mentioned that it would be likely that Early October is when it'll get reviewed after submitting this week. Regardless.. that's a secondary three months earlier than last year..!!

I got a kick out of that.

and your location as willkillya hahaha hilarious, I bet not many understand that..

Nope. It is definitely a unique place, especially the old pickup trucks with "Willkillya Co." stickers in their window.

It was just a question. Don't get your panties in a bunch.
(Something about tongue faces offend me.)

Wow, this is a discussion forum... try not to get too butt-hurt. If I noticed one thing about FSU medical students, it's that they have a pretty good sense of humor.

Good luck doing an oral exam on your future patients with their mouths closed...

Trust me, there are the ones that lack a funny bone. A few of the docs are that way too...I got ripped on an eval for a joke that the standardized patient was cracking up with. I'm sure there are more than a couple of people in my class that think I'm an a-hole, but that's ok. I'll still give them a hug if they need one. 😉

I'm not offended. It is a stressful time and things get misinterpreted....and for what it's worth, I'm not a big fan of the funky breath that accompanies many of those exams.

Except for sammich, she will never get a hug from me. Just lots of sarcasm and frustration, but she is used to that.

Ok I lied, I'd even give her a hug if she wanted one......but not the patented mosspoh bear hug.

So this might be a stupid question but is there an actual fee for the secondary? If so how come I can't see where to pay it? Or is it only showing up after yous ubmit the whole secondary app? I've not submitted this one yet bbecause i need help with how to answer the essays and there are too many of them but wanted to know how much the fee was and couldn't figure it out on line.

If anyone knows can you let me know?

No fee. It's FREE!

YAY!!! That's good after all the secondary fees I've had to pay thus far. 😀

As I've told many times before, I was accepted very late off the waitlist. Not the last, but one of the last people. The secondary fee is paid upon acceptance into the school if you choose to go there. It was by far my favorite secondary fee to pay.....ever.

Guju, haven't seen you around for a while. I thought you were accepted somewhere else. Were you just doing an smp or something?

Yeah I was doing an SMP at BUSM in Boston. 🙂. applying now. Still trying to figure out how to answer all my secondary questions for USF and FSU and the small short essay here and there on a few others. Gotta figure that out this week once and for all and get it out.

I did almost my entire FSU secondary in bulletpoints. I figured that the poor people read drawn out passive voice essays all day, so I made it simple for them. 😛

EDP, complete 7/23, interview invite (IS) today 8/25 at about noon EST. Interviews are available Mondays and Fridays, beginning 8/30.

Since I have been a dedicated little lurker, I know stats will be requested. 30Q, 3.5 cumulative GPA

Are you sure you didn't mean August, 27? I saw the first group of people interviewing today. They all looked very sharp and professional. 😉

Well, thank you sir!

Interviewed: Friday, Aug 27. I've been to the state medical schools in Florida and FSU COM is by far the nicest looking and have the best students/faculty... Hands down.

I hope I get to be a 'Nole next year. Best regards to all the applicants.

The learning community suites are definitely awesome looking. i saw the building when it was first built when we went up to tally years ago. Its beautiful or it was at least when I saw it.

Still not too shabby. It is actually improving overall. They are doing up the top floor that was originally used for storage. They hope to add more study space, a little student fitness center (I'm guessing just some elipticals/treadmills) and one of the departments.

Also, avedawrldnsurf, if you interviewed EDP and were the first date then I'd give you very high odds of getting accepted. I don't want to jinx you, but nearly every person I know who interviewed EDP got in or off the waitlist at some point.

I talked to one of you guys for about 15 seconds as I was leaving my LC. He was interviewing with one of the nicest administration/faculty people at the entire med school, so I while he may have been terrified, I knew he drew a good card. 😛

Thanks for the encouragement, MossPoh. I'm really excited about having the chance to go to FSUCOM. Definitely feels like a place I'd want to spend the next 4 years of school at.

It seemed that both of my interviewers could have been the nicest faculty members in the school... or maybe that's just a common theme. Yeah, everyone is awesome over there.

The trick is to breathe... during the interview. Haha... Lol.

Btw, parking is horrific. Future interviewees: do not try to make your own parking spaces at the COM. It does not fly well with security. Park in the gigantic parking garage off of Stadium and show up EARLY to get a spot.

Trash talking me when I'm not even around?!? Come on. I had better things to do on my mini-summer break than be around SDN.

And I'm hurt that you won't give me a real hug

You know it is misdirected affection my love.

Clearly they aren't making second year hard enough if you have time to trash me on SDN 😛

Oh they are, but I need to do something during my study breaks. I had to run home for something around 2:30 yesterday and I truly forgot how nice sunshine is.

It still is!! Good luck to ya, if you have questions you know where to find me 😉

Good luck to all the people, interviewing. I will see some of you on the tour.

Just remember to relax!! Throw us a smile when you see a group of medstudents!! We are either going to eat or going to class. We travel in packs but we wont bite..

Of to study for my quiz (time right now 1AM)!!

any idea on when regular admissions people start hearing back?
