They confirmed my letters were received and my app was in the review pile on August 31st, but still no word. They said it would be 4-6 weeks from the 31st til I heard back but nada thus far. Any reason to worry?

You could just ask to see where your app is sitting since it has been over the time frame they gave you, but I wouldn't be too concerned. The office is really overwhelmed currently. They had a little bit of a slow start since Marcy was out at the beginning of the process, and they have even more applications this year than last year that they are working their way through! I know they are working as fast as they can to get through. Some of the best advice I can give is no news is good news, cause you're still in the running!!! Just try and stay calm, which is a lot easier to say when you're in med school then when you're applying, but things will work out!!!

does anyone know when the next round of acceptances and holds will go out?

at my interview, they said that decisions are made every other Thursday...the next committee meeting is on 10/28...so probably on 10/29 or on 11/1

I'm wondering more about whether they'll send a hold email again to everyone who's still in the hold pile since they'll be constantly reviewing apps. Something along the lines of...

"Dear skyhyp2009...at our last meeting you were placed on hold and told that we would review your application throughout the season as more applications come in. Unfortunately, after another committee meeting, we decided that we still don't know if we want you at our school. You see, we lowered the criterion for admittance to our school to a 9 out of 10 on our scale of awesome-ness (last time we only accepted those applicants we felt were absolutely perfect in body, mind, and soul). Despite your unending love for our school, we regret to tell you that you are just not quite that awesome, at least from our perspective. But because we may be spurned by our first choices and may have to turn to you as one of our backup options, we have again put your application on hold and will continue to review your application throughout the interview season. We hope that you will be patient with us throughout this long process."

well, at the committee meeting interviewees are ranked, correct? (I interviewed on Oct 15 and have still not gotten the ranked email). Do you think that they send decisions immediately after ranking candidates? I would have thought they take some more time to make their decision. For those who have gotten their decisions, how long after the interview were you ranked, and how long after receiving the ranked email did you get your decision?

The Friday and Monday interviewees are grouped together and alphabatized. The committee has been getting to this group about 10 days after the Monday interview - on the following Thursday. If you come early enough in the alphabet and if your interviewers are present at the meeting.. you get ranked. You are sent an email telling you that they have decided how awesome you are, but are keeping everything except the fact of their decision secret.

Sometime after you are ranked (I am currently ranked, but neither on hold nor accepted) they will send us an email telling us whether we are awesome enough to get an immediate acceptance, or are being kept on the string for eventual celebration or depression in the future.

Last year, they only sent out one "you're on hold email" with the understanding that unless you hear otherwise, you're still on hold. The next email came in early February to say that everyone was ranked and they are working to make the waitlist. A month later, they emailed to tell you if you're on the waitlist.

Do you think that they send decisions immediately after ranking candidates? I would have thought they take some more time to make their decision. For those who have gotten their decisions, how long after the interview were you ranked, and how long after receiving the ranked email did you get your decision?

On last year's SDN forum, you'll see that the relationship between time of hold status and time of acceptance was variable. Some people got acceptances quickly and for others it took a while.

My best advice is to try to keep it out of your mind and ride the wave. At this point, you just have to wait and see how things play out, and there isn't much you can do that you haven't already done.

Its good advice, but more difficult in practice. 🙂

^ This.

Listen to what this man is telling you.

And let me repeat this (for the 10^6 time): Mayo will keep considering you at every meeting until they tell you otherwise. People who are considered and not accepted the first time are commonly accepted within 1-2 weeks at the next meeting. This is not your typical medical school admissions office. They are looking for specific things that are not related to your MCAT, grades, and what you have accomplished per se and will not just put you on the "backburner" to simmer for the next six months until everyone else has been admitted/all of their "first choices" turn them down. This will end up happening in the end to some people, but Mayo really will keep giving you an equal chance of admission until they fill the class. If Mayo doesn't tell you no, then you really do have the same chance as everyone else who is up for consideration at each meeting until they do officially "let you go."

:luck: everyone!

Pre or post interview?

Pre-interview. I'm assuming its due to one of my less than stellar pre-req grades that I retook (C+).

EDIT: I'm in at UVA, UMD, and UMich. I'll be seeing you in Ann-Arbor at second look, perhaps? Really hoping some merit aid falls through!

Any clue why, if they decide not to admit you at first, they might change their minds in subsequent meetings? What happens in the interim that would affect their decision?

good question; I'm wondering the same thing.

There could be all sorts of reasons. Since none of us are on the admissions committee we can only speculate, but I imagine there are a number of factors. The most obvious reason they might change their decision might be if you updated them with something like curing cancer; aside from that, whether or not your paper actually got published, etc, in the time between your interview and the decision shouldn't make too much of a difference (they are trying to accept people, not journal articles, into the medical school, so if you did research that is what counts more - not whether or not you published the research).

Next scenario: They accepted someone just like you. With only 50 people in the class, they try to keep things diverse (in every respect of the word), so you get put on hold. The first person withdraws because they realize Mayo doesn't fit them. You get in.

Etc, etc. There are plenty of reasons that the hold list (and eventually the wait list) moves, so try not to worry. It does move, so don't pull out just because you're put on hold or wait listed. As previously mentioned, about half the class here comes in off the wait list.

This is not anatomy studying.

I wonder when the next invites will be going out for interviews. I'm trying to patiently wait...I guess no news is better than bad news at this point..Letters received 9/30. It is hard not to think about it or get nervous because I have already previously visited Mayo and fell in love with it. Also the fact that they only interview until December makes more difficult...sigh...hope other 9/30s hear back soon...

Mayo give me some love!:xf:

First, Nerday stated some great reasons as to why this would happen.

Second, anything anyone other than the deans tell you is speculation, but we do see patterns and can comment on what we have noticed from past occurences.

My point is not that "something changes" or that "they change their minds."

My point is that, where most schools make up their minds about you at that first initial meeting and don't consider you at all until the season is done and they need to fill their class, Mayo will keep considering you at each juncture until they tell you no or the season ends. At that point Mayo is pretty much like every other school.

So, if you have interviewed, and did not get the call on the first day, take comfort in the fact that you will be reconsidered MANY more times. Just ride the wave and try not to worry too much.

It definitely gives an advantage to early applicants, but you won't get punished for applying early like you might at other places because they "want to see what else is out there" before offering a place to applicants worthy of admission, but perhaps not "superstars." But this is just the way I personally see it.

:luck: everyone!

I can assure you this is not the reason you weren't offered an interview.

Eh. Your guess is as good as mine.

"How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie pop?"

"The world may never know"

Life moves on. Good luck, fellow SDNers. I sure loved Rochester when I visited. Bad fit, I guess.

Does anyone know when the interview day is over? I know the email says by 3:30pm, so if I book a shuttle ticket for 3:45pm would that be cutting it close?

well, the shuttle says you should be at the designated pick-up location fifteen minutes before the scheduled pick up time. Plus, even if the shuttle came at 3:45, would you really show up to your interview with your bags and whatnot? i feel like that would be cutting it close...

hey! you'll absolutely be fine. I had the same worries, but as long as you tell one of the admissions people (carmen or marcy) that you have a shuttle at 345 you're good to go. It might cut towards 330, but you can leave and they understand.

The walk to the shuttle at Grand Kahler takes seriously less than 3 minutes!!!

haha, aw. This is actually what I did and if you plan on doing so, you can leave them in the same room and just go with it. Not sure if this is for everyone, but I stayed with a host and wanted to save on costs, etc.

i just wanted to say hi to everyone on this board! I've been reading these forums quite extensively for interviews and what not esp. this Mayo forum but haven't posted anything (half laziness, quarter ocd so i know it would worsen things haha, and quarter just cause i didn't feel like it)...probably because you guys have answered everything and bamtuba, sortabigdeal, and nerday, you guys have been so amazing to help us applicants out.

ps--nerday, it was nice to meet you. i stayed with your pal buch at the hamilton. 🙂

Hey guys! I'm currently on the shuttle back to MSP from Rochester and thought I'd pass along some info that might be useful. My apologies if anything has been said before.

As far as the interview day goes, you'll have two interviews of 30 minutes; both will be with members of the admissions committee. There's also some "explore Mayo time" which is essentially free time, and everyone had about ~1.5 hours of this over the course of the day. Everyone seemed to agree that the interviews were VERY relaxed. Everyone's interviews were done at 2:30, and the last 30 minutes was a quick talk by the chair of the admissions committee (I left early to catch the shuttle, so if you're worried about transportation issues, just let the staff know).

For those of you that have interviewed, they shared some info that might be of use to you. They've sent out ~15 acceptances thus far; decisions go out biweekly, but the committee meets to review and rank people weekly. If you've interviewed and haven't been ranked, it's more than likely due to one of your interviewers being absent at the committee meeting. They won't discuss/rank you if one of your interviewers is absent. As far as the rest of the season goes, they're planning on sending out ~50 acceptances by the start of the new year. After that, all acceptances will be to replace those that withdraw (i.e., when one person withdraws, another acceptance will go out to replace that person). Marcy said they expect to send out ~75 acceptances total from the ~300 people that interview. As far as other numbers go, they received ~4200 applications and requested LORs from ~1600 applicants.

As far as my opinions/suggestions, I would DEFINITELY try and stay a couple of days and hang out with the students if at all possible and explore as much of Rochester as possible. That's really what sold me - Nerday and SortaBigDeal are incredible, so definitely try and meet them if you can (didn't get a chance to meet bamtuba). The insight from students is extremely valuable, and a lot of the stuff I talked about with them wasn't mentioned on the interview day.

Best of luck!

wow, thanks for all of the info! I was already beyond excited to get to interview here so now, I'm...er.... even more beyond beyond excited!

Yeah, today was a REALLY busy day for me, but for those of you that come up for your interview I'm pretty easy to figure out 😉

Glad you enjoyed the day Cole!

would you really show up to your interview with your bags and whatnot?

It's completely acceptable to bring your bags to the interview--even expected. The admissions office will let you keep your bags in the conference room within the admissions office.

Oh, don't be so flattering, Cole! You know us first-years don't have any say in the admissions process, right 😉! It was fun meeting you and going out for our run. To anyone else who is interviewing here before it gets wicked cold, I'd be happy to go out for a run with you to show you some of the many trails we have here in Rochester.

Just wondering what types of diversity they take into account.

As I said, everything. Our class is the most eclectic group of people I've ever met. We have people on all parts of the spectrum for interests, religion, experiences, education, ethnicity, financial background, geographic background, etc. The one uniting factor we all share is the ability/drive to become (hopefully) high quality physicians.

We have multiple people in the class who came in with PhD's (one of whom finished hers 3 days before school started!). We have some ridiculous number of religions/lack thereof represented. We have a classmate who speaks five languages, two who grew up abroad as children of missionaries, many who sing/dance/play instruments (always amazing to witness). Marathon runners. Food bloggers. Etc, etc, etc.

They don't throw around the word "diversity" in order to put on a show. Our class truly is diverse in every respect.

I agree with you in all but one respect. Crazy endurance athletes are an ORM (yes...over-represented minority) at Mayo Medical School.

Are there any students at Mayo who are so average that they would stand out from all that diversity (thus making themselves diverse in the process)? 🙂

Yeah, definitely. Pharoah88 or SortaBigDeal got in with bribes. I'm not sure they even understand what a "patient" is.

Yeah, I think the committee misunderstood when SortaBigDeal said he was a "patient person." Big difference between having patience and seeing patients, but too late now I guess.

Oh, and I definitely got in because my back-up option was to be an airline attendant.

For those of you who end up here, you'll figure out what I mean during orientation...maybe.

Oh, and post 1000 on the 2015 Mayo thread! 🙂
