I am an out of stater that interviewed with both Tuscon and Phoenix. I have a 3.8 GPA (well 3.79) and 32 on the MCAT. Do I have a shot at getting in?

The fact that you got an interview as an OOS applicant means that they liked what they saw in your primary/secondary apps. Your chances are as good as anyone's.

Is there a link for a status page (with user login)? We're getting conflicting reports left and right and it'd be nice to be sure... :scared:

Do you know for sure that they actually released acceptances yesterday?

I talked to ASU premed adviser today and he hadnt gotten the acceptances yet and my understanding is that the advisers are informed about all the accepted students from their school the same day.

GUYS - it's torture watching everyone speculate. Just call and ask the Phoenix admissions staff. They are very friendly and would be happy to answer questions. I've called many, many times to ask about the next step and promise they won't jerk you around.

STOP obsessing and just call.

Calling them has not been very reliable for me so far. I have called them for the last two acceptance waves and the person (same person who answers the phone in all occasions for me) gave me the wrong information.

I did call them today and they did indeed send out emails yesterday.

That is not to say they were not nice. Every time I have called or gone in, they were very friendly.
 
So if we interviewed a long while ago and haven't heard back yet, is it safe to assume that we won't hear back until the full-out announcement in March? It seems that if they admit from the top of their scored stack and they keep adding folks on top of the stack as they interview, you'd either be admitted in the round immediately after your interview (or *maybe* the next one if the next group wasn't as strong) or during the slew of admittances at the end of the application season.

Thoughts?

I believe the only announcements to come in March are those rejected and those on the waitlist. Phoenix is rolling out acceptance offers every 2 weeks. If I have estimated the calendar correct and recall from the wrap up session, I would put at least 4 more release dates on the books before the rej and wl come out. A friend of mine interviewed in early Oct and wasn't accepted until the Dec 17 round. I interviewed earlier and was accepted in the first round. I suspect it all depends on where you rank with respect to everyone else in the pool and not when you interviewed.

Not sure what TUcson is doing. I have so many friends from UA that are being accepted at really great schools but haven't heard boo from Tucson. It is very weird to me.

not necessarily. the scores only correlate to the interview and there is more to the application than that. besides, even if someone has the highest interview score from a given day, it could just be a bum group and they may double dip into a previous group that was on average much stronger. but who really knows with these things..

I remember talking to one of the current students at meet and greet thing the night before interview (UA-phx) who interviewed in october and didnt get accepted until feburary. But it does seem like that chances of acceptance goes down with each wave.
 
hmm, I'm getting a little worried now. Still haven't received any news from either Tucson or Phoenix.

I interviewed in September for Tucson, and October for Phoenix...... I thought I would have heard back at least from one of them now.

Can someone tell me what the interview is like (Tucson). How many people, and who (faculty, M2, or?), interview, how long, what typical questions, is it open file?

One interviewer. Semi-open file. They can see your secondary essays and ECs if they choose. One person from UA-it can be anyone.

Thanks, also, do you know typically how large the group is on any given interview? how long does the single interview with the faculty rep last?, is it more of a conversation (Columbia's interview is like this, not really any questions) or Q&A? How long does it take to hear back a decision? Do you recommend sending thank you cards to the interviewer, and lastly, what is the schedule of the typical interview. I assume there is a tour, lunch, meet-n-greet with M2, hospital tour, and interview, thats it or more? If there is a meet-n-greet with other students, do you know if the things said/asked to these students are brought to the committees attn later? (John Hopkins had this meet n greet and i am suspicious that they were observing us when they thought we had our guards down)..

Out of all the interviews I went to last year (including, columbia, hopkins and UA) UA was the most awkward because their questions were straight out of the predicted question bank: name three characteristics of a successful clinician, give me examples where you demonstrated those three. BTW the Hopkins meetngreet was simply volunteers and not part of the admission process, although some students are student interviewers. Some people give thank you letters, but I don't think its very feasable when you have to mail out 20+ letters.
 
yeah my tucson interview was awkward too. the first thing i was asked was my opinion on proton radiation therapy and it just got weirder from there.
 
My tucson interview was super relaxed and not awkward at all. Maybe that's because I didn't have an MD or a Professor?

My interview had almost no questions and was very conversational (it did help that we had a lot in common, I'm sure). At one point, she said "oh! wait! I have to ask you....*shuffles some papers* how do you think the healthcare system could be fixed? Also, what three qualities do you think are important for a physician to have?" So it seems that there are some specific questions for each candidate.
 
Tucson interviews are hit or miss. They are desperate for interviewers (my interviewer told me this), so there's no telling who you will get.
 
I interviewed last year with a neurologist and the interview was terrible. It was contentious and unbearably awkward. He would ask one question and I would answer, and this went on and on.

However, this year I interviewed with a M4 and it was more of a conversation. The young man I interviewed with had a lot in common with me, so it ended up being a very comfortable interview. We'll see how it turns out for me this year...

1. Why you want to go to medical school
2. Why not nurse/PA/Ph.D depending on answer to first
3. Why UA

can anyone ocnfirm these questions? I am still having a tough time practicing my answer as for 2 and 3. How about you guys tell me what you think for 2 and 3 🙂
 
3 was one of the secondary essay questions...but, if you still don't know why UA, I would recommend digging around their website and seeing what stands out about the program to you. Also bare in mind that the answers to these questions depend on your personal experiences and priorities.

No one can "confirm" anything because questions depend on interviewer. Depending on your application thus far, your interviewer may find different questions pertinent to your interview. UA entertains a open-file interviewing situation where the interviewer has the choice to use or not use your primary and secondaries.

I can tell you that there are a set of questions you should be ready to address, at ANY interview. If you are not ready for some basic questions like "Why UA?", "Why Medicine?", "What are your strengths/weaknesses?", "Views on ...", "Explain your research on ..." , "How did such and such from app help make an impact?","Relation to AZ?", then you are not really ready for the school. Most people are not going to hear until the last few acceptance releases or the waitlist date
 
Just checkin' in with my SDN brothers and sisters...how're you all doing? I've been in a bit of a holiday/post-holiday break daze for the last few weeks and as I pump the red bulls and ice water baths to wake up for Neuro 4 I'll try to be a little bit more involved but know that you can hit me or Phospho, Salt, et al. up at any time for questions or comments.
 
Applicants for the December 21st wave should begin to hear something this Friday. I'm really nervous.

Is there a number as to how many spots have been offered/filled at UofA - Phoenix yet?

Phx overfills, so more than the allotted seats will be offered. I believe per Tara, they've already offered enough to fill (or close to it) all seats already. I'm hoping I hear something this time (didn't on the 4th), but yea, the 14th is the next release date. :luck: :xf:

I wouldn't lose hope if you haven't heard back yet even if the class is filling up. There are still a significant amount of acceptances at a number of schools still happening in the spring and for perhaps geographical/financial/"best fit" reasons, some people who have been accepted to Phoenix will drop their acceptance if they get into their top choice (obviously not the case if Phoenix is the top choice), freeing up the spot for others to fill up. Also, as far away as it may be, after May 15th (as you all know), an accepted student must commit to one school and drop other acceptances so applicants should see WL movement there.

Anyway, I just want to urge people (especially out of staters) that may feel they have a snowball's chance in hell of getting in not to lose hope, even if you are vying for 12 spots and that I myself didn't get in until after May 15th off of the WL last year. Despite having another acceptance at the time, Phoenix was my top choice and I made sure to communicate that to the adcom with update/interest letters.

The application process is definitely precarious and emotionally trying. Good luck everyone. I'm rooting for you all.

How many letters did you send, when did you send them, and what was the general message you conveyed in these update/interest letters?

I believe that the Choose-Only-One-School-and-Release-the-Others date if you are accepted here at Phoenix (and a couple of other schools that start early) is going to be April 15th this year but I could be wrong.

I sent one in shortly after my interview stating specific things I liked about the school and why it became my first choice after my interview day (in Novemeber, I think) and I sent another one in again expressing my continued interest in the school despite having another acceptance and also added a publication, award nomination to it (sometime last Spring). I think what may have helped the most was that what I wrote was sincere and I tried to convey as much as possible why UACOM-P was right for me/I was right for the school.

Je ne sais pas. You know more about these things than I do. Even if it is April 15th for Phoenix, though, someone can still get pulled off of the WL at their top choice after someone else drops a spot at a May 15th abiding school. Either way, I think the main idea is for people not to despair even if it's late spring (while still making sure to have their ducks in a row should they have to reapply for the following cycle).

Yeah absolutely! A significant portion of our class came in off the waitlist.
 
Did anyone recently get an offer for an interview from UA-Tucson (yesterday) only to receive an e-mail later (today), saying that they had been offered the interview by mistake and were not being offered an interview?

I'd like to believe that I'm not the only one and they pulled what UCSD undergrad did and sent a response to every applicant inviting them for one (UCSD admitted every applicant).

Wow that sounds really awful 🙁 sorry that you had to experience that. Keep your chin up though, they don't know what they're missing out on.

That doesn't gel with what I remember hearing from the presentation. I was under the impression that UofA Phoenix only has 48 outstanding offers at a time to fill the class size, but that they pull from the waitlist as needed. I was also told that last year they pulled upward 150 people from the waitlist just in order to fill those 48 seats. Can anyone else confirm those numbers?
