Also, I would hardly describe medical school applications as a lottery

As someone who has been rejected pre interview at schools that previously invited me to interview (with a better app this cycle too), and then invited to a random set of schools, the interview invite stage definitely feels more like a lottery than being a consistent and repeatable process.

I think there's still reason to be optimistic - I think of the 70 or so invitations yet to be sent. Of course, having a plan B (other school, application buffers lined up for off year) will reduce stress at this point.

thanks!
do you have any more info on the phoenix wait list? (which is to be released tomorrow)
do you have any idea how many people they pull from their wait list?

Unfortunately they only release the same info to us as they do to you. I wasn't put on the Phoenix waitlist last year, so I don't have too much insight from personal experience into how their process works. I know that they don't rank their list (or at least they didn't last year), so you will get an email telling you that you are on it, but with no number. From what I have heard from other students, the general theory is that they have pools of people instead of a decided list. This means that if a spot opens up, they re-review a number of applications and make a selection for the spot instead of just pulling the next person off the list as Tucson would do. This is just a theory that the students have though and it could be completely wrong. If you do make it on the waitlist for Phoenix it definitely can't hurt to ask Admissions if it is OK to send in additional materials such as Letters of Intent to show your commitment to the school. Also, a big one if you haven't done it already is to send a Thank You note to your interviewer. I know the interview process was different this year, so maybe it is not feasible, but if it in anyway is make sure you making that lasting impression 🙂

Agreed 🙂 Good luck BearDown!

Well, *gulp*, today is the day. May the admissions committe look upon us with favor and allow us the opportunity to keep this dream alive a little longer with a WL position to Phx. I'm actually a llittle nervous to check my inbox today.

I'm pretty sure they said this is exactly what they do when I was there for my interview, so it's not just a theory. They don't use a linear list because they like to maintain a certain balance of students (some with research focus, some who are interested in rural medicine, some interested in public health, etc.), so when someone withdraws their application they will replace them with a similar applicant to maintain the balance.

"Does everyone accepted get the $1500 scholarship?"
No. When you get accepted you will have a scholarship application to fill out which is mostly based on need. A lot of people get a scholarship, but sometimes not as much as $1500.

I think everyone might actually get the $1500 this year. I thought I remembered the financial aid lady saying that during my interview in Tucson, and right after I was accepted I received the $1500 offer before receiving the scholarship application information. So I think that one is a universal gift, to be supplemented by whatever else comes of the applications.

Sounds like everyone gets it then 🙂 I hope the second years get the same deal ha ha!

soo, does anyone have more insight about Tucson? Do they inform us that we are waitlisted by March 9-11 or must we wait till April like someone suggested? Do they tell us our position on it or just say we've been listed? How about if we've been rejected, let us know now or after the waitlist goes out?

... Not a happy camper...

Good luck to all my fellow applicants still hoping to get a wait-list spot! It sucks to feel so unwanted. 🙁

Anyone know when the emails from Phoenix are going out today?

Anyone know when the emails from Phoenix are going out today?

Historically I have received all my e-mails from Phoenix before 1:00pm MST... However, I don't actually know when they are going out.

Refresh... Refresh...

If anyone can get some clarity on Tucson that would be great.

Very frustrated about applying for a couple years with still no acceptance...... and yes part of me gets a little annoyed and spiteful when I see people celebrating but another part of me knows that there is no way to predict how I am going to express my emotions if I get in, so I am in no position to judge anyone

Congrats to those accepted, even bigger congrats to those accepted after applying for a few years (I understand the perserverence that takes)..... I've been on a waitlist before and not pulled off, it can be agonizing, but trust me IT IS ALWAYS better than a rejection........

After applying for a few years I can honestly say I have severely improved my MCAT (Mid 30s) Gotton a graduate degree with a high GPA (upper 3's), crafted a killer personal statement, and become very good at interviews. I do feel that some of this process is kind of random (lottery style), based on chance, but to say most or all of the selection process post-interview is a lottery is not a very accurate statement. This is coming from someone who has applied for MULTIPLE years.

Try applying more than 3 years before you decide you have any perspective on what it feels like to be not accepted and point fingers about how best to deal with it. I for one am CONFIDENT I will get into medical school someday and although I have always been initially upset I've delt with my emotions maturely and moved FORWARD. If I or any of us accepted defeat we would have stopped applying years ago. Congrats again to everyone, wish you nothing but success, and I am crossing my fingers for all of us who have worked hard and are still waiting to hear some good news:xf:

P.S. Everyone I know (10ish people) who did not give up and kept applying eventually got in somewhere whether it took them 2-5 years, keep your chin-up, if you want it you can have it, just might be a lot longer and harder than any of us anticipated

Talked to Phoenix. They said should be late afternoon but definitely today.

Thanks tjugs6... I guess I'll stop wasting my time and finish studying for my Physioloy exam...

After 5 Months (151 days) of waiting with no word or contact... Rejected.

The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix is pleased to share with you that you have been placed on our wait list for admission to the Entering Class of 2011.

You are a qualified candidate and our relatively small class size precludes our accepting all of the candidates we would like. As shared during the Applicant Visit Day wrap-up session, the Admissions Committee reserves the right to maintain a pool of candidates; therefore, there is no ranked position we can share with you today. Additionally, we do not disclose the number of applicants placed on our waitlist. Finally, given the unpredictable nature of where a given applicant matriculates, we are unable to further clarify the probability that you may receive an acceptance to our campus.

interviewed at UA- Phoenix in aug.

waitlisted.

also this was written in the letter
"As you know, April 15th is the national "final" decision day for students currently holding a seat for the College of Medicine-Phoenix; however, movement in our class can occur through the first day of orientation."

i thought the national day fro final decision was 05/15. Am I wrong?

Did they send you an email notifying you that you were rejected? Or are emails only coming to those who were waitlisted

Rejected from PHX

IS 3.96 30

Good luck everyone still in it, the phx campus has a really cool group of people getting a great education 🙂

Did you get an e-mail or does no e-mail mean that you are rejected? My application status page hasn't changed...

Rejected from PHX. I found it particularly annoying that I was told to be "proud" of being in the "top 25%." Great, thanks. 🙄

As a side note, UA Phoenix even admitted to messing up my application. I submitted my app in early September and heard nothing for two-plus months...until I received an email in late November about an "error" that was discovered during a "routine audit" (by which time half the admissions season had gone by). I find it disturbing that my chances for admission were significantly reduced due to a clerical mishap - considering most of the rounds of admission had passed before I was even given my opportunity to interview. Despicable.

I agree with this. It is funny how some people have the 'well it was great at least to get an interview' mentality. Getting rejected post interview is the worst slap in the face! There is such a high opportuntiy cost associated with interviewing due to time, emotion, money, travel, time not at work, etc. Best case rejection scenario is hearing back quickly from the time you submit your app with a no.

has anyone else not heard anything still? I wonder why some emails went out and others didn't

Anyone know what the chances are for movement off of the Phoenix Waitlist? The email wasn't very encouraging/helpful...

I also thought the day to make a decision for which school you go to was in May....not April

Although this is my first post in this forum, I have been following it since my interview...

I never thought I would be so happy to be waitlisted! I haven't been accepted anywhere yet so I'm hoping things work out in the end!

Rejectified! Gonna go out get some food and beer with the wife. Hopefully we'll get some love from Tucson. Congrats to those who got into Phoenix and good luck to those waitlisted.

I was fully expecting to get rejected, but I got waitlisted. Since my interview my wife got a job at ASU and I have been wondering if I should tell phoenix that I have moved to the area, but I have the thought that they might see it as "Oh great he can apply again next year with better chances," and not accept me this round. Thoughts?

People keep mentioning that they are checking their "application status" online. How are you doing this? People have also mentioned that once accepted they can see other people who were also accepted online as well. Anyone know where this is accessed?

It's a tough process, I hope it works out for you and everyone else on here. (including myself...)

anyone know how many people are waitlisted at Phoenix?

It sounds like the rejection letter of one of the above posters said they were in the top 25%, so the waitlist must be less than that?

I think top 25% is referencing the fact that the school only interviews about 25% of applicants, not top 25% of interviewees.

I'm guessing all who got rejected received the same email claming they were in the top 25%. 🙁

It seems like this has come up a few times now: for schools whose academic year begins before a certain date (maybe August 1st, I don't know), the date to choose their school is April 15th instead of May 15th. Being that we (UACOM-Phoenix) begins mid-July, we are one of those schools.

I know this process has been incredibly taxing on all of you, but hang in there. I absolutely love this school (and med school in general) and I'm so glad I stuck it out when times got tough. It's totally worth it in the end, if you really want to be a doctor.

Also, for those of you applying again in the future: I spent the day at the NAU Career Fair the other day with Admissions, and the subject of the Letter of Intent came up. Apparently (and I wish I had known this when I applied), keeping in contact with your top choice school(s) is definitely important and these LOIs are very helpful! Schools want to choose the students who will matriculate, so if you make it known that you absolutely plan to if accepted, you will look so much better to them! Update them, send thank-you notes, etc. - Show them the love!

Good luck to you all.

Rejected. I strongly recommend anyone else who was rejected and plans to reapply to medical schools next year to expand into DO schools.

This year was my second time applying. There is an enormous amount of time, effort, stress, money, and life that goes into the process. I had expanded my app this year. I worked in a group home, put in 200 hours of volunteer work at a local emergency room, graduated summa cum laude, and increased my MCAT scores and STILL I was rejected this year from Phoenix (again). It would have been absolutely heartbreaking to me if I wasn't accepted to a DO school just yesterday.

I had applied to AACOMAS in September and I finished my app to Midwestern University in Glendale a little before January. My interview was three weeks ago and my acceptance was yesterday. DO schools are a whole new realm of opportunities and applying can only improve your odds of one day being called Doctor.

To those accepted and waitlisted, congratulations! To those who were not, keep a chin up. A second year in limbo is always tough, but take my advice if you plan to try again. It can only help.

so what is the deal over at Tucson with years 3/4? Can we complete these years at Phoenix?

I agree with the DO thing. I have shadowed docs of all specialties that are DOs. To include, anesthesia, plastic surgery, emergency medicine etc. What makes you the doc of a certain specialty is residency (dependent on step scores and personal drive). Not the school name or particular letters by your name. The only complaint I have heard from any of them (and it was very rare) was on behalf of the unacquainted patients who were unsure what DO was compared to MD.

+1

That is exactly what I did. As a reapplicant, I did not want to spend yet another year pursuing anything other than a career as a physician. Besides, the DO programs are top notch.

Thanks for the advice! Do you know if a letter of intent will help those of us who are waitlisted, since they don't rank?

If it gives any hope I was accepted to phx, but am still waiting for the Tucson wait list. If I get high enough on that wait list there will be one more spot for someone in phx.

IS 3.6 33
