If they invite you for an interview, you can be sure they have enough interest in you that they want to at the very least wait until they've seen all interviewees before they let you go.

UA interviewing practically all in-state applicants again shows something funny is going on. They could be much more considerate by simply rejecting the obviously unqualified candidates pre-interview. However, I guess the fact that UA Tucson is notorious for accepting some applicants with extremely low numbers answers this conundrum.

Does anyone know if/how an applicant's In-State/OOS status affects position on the waitlist? I know accepting OOS students is pretty new to AZ, do OOS applicants have a chance?

Did anyone else get a reply from Tara Cunningham about holding the position on the waitlist with an attachment of a ppt for reapplicants?

I don't know what to tell you then, other than welcome to the med school application process. It's incredibly frustrating and stressful, and the direction of the rest of your life depends on getting accepted. Believe me, I know what its like having just gone through it myself. I know waiting around for months on end without any news and things getting pushed back sucks, but its not unique to UA and to act like it is so disrespectful/inconsiderate that it reflects poorly on the school and how they treat us as students is just asinine (that's why I replied to your original post). Pitt put me on the wait list in like October ('09) and didn't reject me until this past August (~2 weeks after med school down here had started). During that time I didn't hear jack from them. While I was waiting to hear back from Mayo, stuff consistently got pushed back. Its all part of this awful process. This year UA-Tucson had to push the waitlist back from when they expected do it. I'm sorry that it has affected you guys, but it happens everywhere.
lrkoehle, I am sorry that Pitt and Mayo put you in the position they did. I do agree that the med school application process is, to use your own word, awful. But in three years of applying to 10-15 schools each year, I have not seen it happen "everywhere." Pre-interview, sure, all bets are off. But post-interview, I received my waitlist or reject decision with 2-6 weeks of interview at all schools except UA. Obviously I never made it off the waitlist, but at least I knew where I stood fairly quickly. Of course, that is just IME - your mileage may vary.

Furthermore, I do not feel a school's approach toward its pool of potential students is irrelevant to their treatment of students. The same faculty on the adcom, as you so aptly point out, are also involved in student instruction and administration. If you are of the opinion that my view is asinine, so be it, I can respect that. Everyone has to formulate their own criteria for school selection. That said, my opinion of UA is not "poor," nor is it based solely on this circumstance. Although the primary reasons UA has been my first choice are convenience and price, I still have immense respect for the school.

If you would like to continue this dialogue, please PM me. I do not feel it would be appropriate to continue this in the context of the thread.

Yes! It's not very encouraging... :lame:

Thank you! I love this thread but I was getting a little bogged down with your guys semi-melodramatic debate. I have appereciated both of your insights but this is not the palce for it.

$21,653 per semester (non-resident)

Although not ideal, we can all appreciate the position of an admissions office and our neurotic desire to become a doc. I appreciate the full disclosure of the Phoenix campus and the efforts to keep us informed. No, I don't like being waitlisted and am too considering options out of state, but the fact that Phoenix took the time to craft a 15 or so page document that is geared to reapplying when other schools don't answer their phones is comforting. Several friends were rejected on Friday and this information was also shared with them, but the reality is a good number of us won't get in to the class and at least they force us to think about next year. Again, hopefully this isn't the case for so many of us.

I, for one, appreciate the tough love in the ppt. I kinda wish I would have seen this before I applied - makes me wonder if I was as prepared as I could have been!

Wonder if Tucson will offer something when they notify us or leave to constant guessing as we have had to do all year long. I echo others; the delay seems unnecessarily cruel.

The reason for me that it's particularly aggravating is that if not accepted I'll have to reapply this June (as I just can't afford to wait another year doing a 2-year masters). So I have to scramble to apply to some kind of SMP that I can finish before (hopefully) matriculating to some medical school. If I had known my status earlier in the year or perhaps in December, I'd be lightyears ahead of where I *may* be once Tucson finally releases a WL or more acceptances.

I believe each semester you take around 18-20 units. They have the reduced tuition for students who take 1 unit electives per semester at the medical school (e.g. MPH, Grad students). BTW University of Arizona has been following the block system (Neuro, Cardio, Musculoskeletal etc.) since 2006, so the semester scheduling doesn't really make sense, since each block is approximately 2 months. So they try to approximate the units each semester depending on the blocks taken.

I think I'm going to take a year off from applying for this very reason... I don't think I can change anything meaningful on my application in 2 months (other than re-write PS, experiences and a couple of publications) and I don't feel like rushing into re-taking the MCAT for a new score in June. Taking a whole year off and focusing on developing a stronger app seems like the best option for me right now.

I agree with you SolidWater, If we had heard in December, we'd have 6 months to strengthen an application... On a lighter note... there are still quite a few spots to be handed out :luck: Best of luck for everyone still waiting (you're not alone 🙂)

yup go it. didn't feel so great after reading it.

Pretty sure as long as you're full time you and immediate family get something like 90% off.

It actually comes out to around 50% off. They tax you on what you save as earned income.

To everyone bitching about the admissions process, shut up and deal with it. Things only gets worse the further you go into medicine.

I understand the frustrations and the need for venting regarding the admissions process. Most all of us applicants have seen the difficulties and hardships it can play from our various perspectives. perhaps some more than others; However, this thread has become too woeful.

To those still in limbo, having been there myself as a re-applicant, here is some personal advice. Assume the worst and hope for the best. Start studying for the MCAT or working on whatever needs improving ASAP if you intend to reapply. If you are truly committed, clear your schedule and do whatever it takes to improve your admissions package.

The sad truth is there are far too many well qualified applicants and not enough slots across the US. Thus, many of you fully capable and qualified to be trained as a doc will not be selected. As a backup plan consider a Caribbean school. St. George would be my first choice and Ross my second for various reasons. They accept US financial aid, have plenty of alumni practicing in every state, every specialty, and they have rolling admissions with an entering class in starting in Aug & Jan. I believe there are a few DO schools floating about the US that offer similar programs.

The bottom line is life is moving on whether you want to proceed with it or not. "You can't control the winds but you can adjust your sails."

Yes, through my position at the U of A, we're using the QTR for my husband's grad school. And they do tax you as if you were making the saved money as part of your income.

Nothing is certain but death and taxes 🙄

Did anyone else NOT get an email? I'm wondering if I've been lost in the shuffle of things.

I received a confirmation message after confirming my spot on the waitlist and attached was a ppt. It took a couple of days to get a response back (granted, I emailed over the weekend). Have you confirmed your spot?

waitlist at Phx or Tucson?

The waitlist in Tucson wont be available until the first week of April

Did the last round of acceptances already go out from tucson?

The last "official" round get released last wedenesday. However, they decided to move the date for waitlist release to first week of April, which means that they will be sporadically releasing seats. Somebody posted earlier that their friend was accepted two days ago. As people drop their seats, more seats will open which will result in an unknown number of seats to be released between now and April.

(I have not verified any of this. It is just a summary of what has been discussed here on the last couple of pages.)

I'm gonna bump this thread because I miss procrastinating on it during class.

A friend of mine (works at the school) told me the graduating class in Phoenix all placed in a residency spot. This is the buzz around the Phoenix campus at least. I don't think the students know where they are going yet and find out on Thursday...this is great news for a new medical school.

I know that this question has been asked many times before, but does anyone have any numbers as to the waitlist movement at the COM - Phoenix? I called the admissions office to inquire but they were very tight-lipped, saying they couldn't divulge any numbers, that they keep a pool of applicants and that waitlist movement can take place up to the first day of classes.

There was a pretty graph earlier that had figures for Tucson that was very informative.

how much time does Tucson give their students to study for Step 1 between years 2 and 3?

That's good to hear. I was told at my interview that 2 of the 24 failed Step-I, so it sounds like they did well enough in the clinical years to get a residency.

Yeah, I heard the same. That's a 92% pass rate, above what I can find to be the average. Obviously boards are just one of many factors.

I heard over 10 failed step 1 in Tucson last year - how did this year look for matching?

just curious, does UA allow you to pay your tuition with a credit card without charging you a fee? this could help to rapidly gain points/flight miles.

Secondhand (I'm in class) match results look pretty good. All 24 students matched, about half are going out of state. Neurosurgery at Cleveland Clinic, Neuro/Psychology at Brown, Peds Neuro at Wash U....pretty damn good work by the first class if I do say so myself.

Just got a copy of Tucson's as well, equally impressive. What a great year for UA!

Yeah, you're right. I remember when I first heard it, I though 2 of 24 failing was bad. For only 24 students in the class you'd figure every one would have passed, but it was a brand new school so I'd say not bad.

As for Tucson, I don't remember the exact fail rate here. I know they're doing a number of new things to identify students who may be at risk for not passing to reduce that number to zero. Step-I really isn't an important indicator, so for years they didn't emphasize it much and instead focused more on clinical education here at UA. However, in recent years the newer deans have accepted the importance of Step-I in residency, so they are doing more to raise scores.

I'm not sure if this would work, but I paid my health insurance with a credit card and it had the typical 2-3% fee. However, if you get financial aid within 60 days they refund your credit card and the fee from the financial aid money. So, you might be able to pay with a credit card, get the points, and then have that refunded to your card when financial aid comes in. I'm not sure if that refund would cause you to lose those points though. Something to consider I guess.

Sounds like a solid first match. It's awesome that everyone matched. Nothing scares me more than doing all this and then finding out on Monday that you didn't match anywhere and have to scramble. Once you match, then its just a matter of where...

I guess I should check out my email for that then.

I interviewed back in December. I have heard nothing since. I guess I should have been calling or something, but I kinda thought they would tell me when they were ready. I interviewed in Phoenix as well as Tucson and Phoenix already had their day when we all knew one way or the other (I was rejected).
If Tucson hasn't sent anything at all is there still a chance? Do you think there is still a chance of an acceptance or are those all out and it's just waitlist or reject now?
Should I call or send an email or letter- to who?😕

The final official wave of acceptances has already gone out, but I know at least one person has been accepted as others give up their spots. I believe the wait list is due out the beginning of April. There has historically been lots of WL movement, so there is hope there if you are on the WL. I assume rejects will go out when the WL is released. I don't think people have gotten much info from calling, just the release dates. Good luck!
