I just called the school. Lynn said that waitlist movement is minimal this year. I asked what the movement was like last year, and she said it was minimal as well. However, I know that there were multiple acceptances off the waitlist for last year's class- in fact I know someone that was accepted 5/17. What's going on?!

Nothing. Minimal is a pretty loose term. Its going to be relative. Minimal in her experience may be 25 or so people being accepted from the waitlist after May 15th because in the past she's seen 100 pulled. (theres are imaginary numbers, for illustrative purposes)

Its all relative - there's no real way to know exactly what she meant by 'minimal.'

I would say she is probably trying to imply that there won't be a lot of waitlist this year relative to the number of people on the waitlist and that people shouldn't be planning on an acceptance (which should always be true of waitlists).

Good luck to all. Hopefully some of you will get some good news. But don't read into everything you hear.

Well I can definitely see that. I went to the second look and almost everyone I talked with were impressed with UC Irvine (including myself) and is. 95% sure that they will attend Irvine.
I don't think u will see much movement until ucla starts admitting students since 95% of the students are waitlisted at ucla.

Ok everyone, let's not all get super somber. It's just the start of "WL movement season." If you look on UCLA and UCSD threads they are not moving either. Additionally, there is potential for UCI accepted applicants to switch to UCLA or UCSD when they get in off those waitlists. It will happen soon!

And the fact that there hasn't been any waitlist movement here at all yet maybe means they just haven't gotten around to selecting/calling? There should be at least SOME movement right? even if it is very little?

+1 spot in the irvine class. as much as i loved irvine and the fact that they give free ipads, gonna withdrawal my spot.

good luck everyone!

For those who got accepted in UCI, would you mind posting:

1) GPA
2) MCAT with individual scores
3)ECs

Thanks and those will be super helpful for premed students!👍

I don't know whether to be excited that this is the caliber of student garnering acceptances (i.e. lots of waitlist movement as they accept better schools), or that ridiculous stats are now the norm of med school competition. My eyes are finally adjusting and I am just beginning to perceive the horrors that lie in the depths of the admissions process.

Sci gpa: 3.85
Overall gpa: 3.84
MCAT: 37R
EC's: A LOT of bioengineering research in the area of drug delivery and also some tissue engineering. Did some interesting work with stroke patients as well as social caseworking for indigent populations, and some misc. college club activities.

some random advice to the premeds:
* study hard! you are first and foremost a student as an undergrad. don't get carried away with the ec's and make sure you make yourself fundamentally sound in the sciences. keep your gpa up and do well on the mcat, as these will always be the two key things to medical school apps. don't be intimidated by the huge lists of things people like to post on SDN and feel compelled to do the same at the cost of your fundamentals: studying + grades
* as for ec's, spend time early on in college to find what you enjoy doing. that can be research, abroad work, teaching, or whatever. go deep into it. take an active role, gain leadership skills, and lead. get to know mentors who can write you strong LOR's. in the ec department, it's quality over quantity.
* have fun with the whole process. don't get swallowed up by the checklist mentality of doing things because you feel as though that's what med schools want. enjoy the experience, and that often will mean finding the right reasons to even begin pursuing medicine in the first place.

1) 3.99 cGPA, 4.00 sGPA, CA resident and UCI alumni
2) 28M (9PS-9VS-10BS)... yeah I was surprised I got any Cali love with this score...
3) Tons of research, some publications, solid amount of clinical/volunteering, lots of leadership, work experience, tutoring, etc. See my MDapps.

Wow, you guys have some crazy MCAT scores!! I'm extremely grateful that UCI decided to overlook my score for some reason .

3.68 / 3.69 cGPA / sGPA
3.99 Graduate GPA (Urban Education Master's)
37Q MCAT

I was a UCI alum and triple-major

Good luck waitlisters! Some unexpected movement came from another school and I'll be (sadly) withdrawing from UCI soon.

Good luck at UCLA alicepalace and dbeast! To the rest of us cheers to some WL movement soon!

I don't like to see people choosing UCLA over UCI, makes me think that I may have made a wrong choice (not really though.... well... maybe a little bit)

Just because other people chose UCLA over UCI doesn't mean you made the wrong choice! Everybody has different preferences, you just do what's right for you.

For college, everybody made a big deal that I chose UCI over UC Berkeley (where I'm from, most people have never heard of UCI). Sure, Berk is the big name school, but I had my reasons for wanting to go to UCI instead. And I don't regret my decision one bit.

from the cynical/troll standpoint of this account: you made the wrong choice

You already did 4 years at UCLA and are over it so you have the most legit reason out of anyone who would make that choice. You'll make a very awesome anteater, and you're definitely still coming out waaaaaay on top of the admissions process by attending UCI.

Hey MSTP wait-listers, I withdrew this morning, so I hope that opens up one more spot.

LOL, don't worry. I turned down a higher ranked school for UC Irvine. It stings a little bit, especially since all the attending I worked with said that I should have went to the higher ranked school.

But after a while I realized that UC Irvine is the place that I want to be for reasons beyond the ranking. Besides, I have to be in med school and not anyone else.

Dont sweat it. Best advice I can give you is to care very little about what other peopke are doing. Just do you and youll come out in top.

Has anyone called the Admissions Office? Hopefully the waitlist moves soon and there will be good movement for us! Interviewed in early February, waitlisted in March. In-state applicant.

To UCI students who got in off the waitlist: how often did you contact the Office of Admissions? I haven't emailed the office after the 15th, but have sent a letter of intent and another update letter via email after I was waitlisted. Thanks!

Congrats to acceptees and good luck to fellow waitlistees! 🙂

Hmm. Maybe Tuesday.

When I was on the alternate list I sent them an update in April and a letter of intent mid-May. What you sent in sounds just fine. Persistence is important, but don't overdo it and drive admissions crazy.

Last year at the beginning of June they emailed those of us on the alternate list a form to fill out, which basically was asking us if we were still interested in being considered for an acceptance. So keep a look out for that in the near future. If you haven't heard anything by early June, maybe contact them to see what's up, but that's up to you.

I know how stressful and confusing all this "alternate list" business is, hang in there and good luck!!!!!

Hey CantWinThemAll .. I remember all your posts last year when we were both on the WL. Good to hear that you got in. Hopefully the WL starts moving this year.. I really hope to get in this time around! :xf:

Has anyone actually been accepted from the waitlist this cycle?

If you look back in this thread a couple pages, there were a few people taken off the waitlist prior to may 15th.

There may be lots of waitlist movement soon. There may not be. Unfortunately for those on the alternate list, UCI isn't the school it used to be. It is the 'lowest ranked' UC so it used to be the last choice California school, or was chosen for location.

However, with the ipads and huge leaps in electronic education and the ultrasound that is being taught from first year - its no longer the "back up California school." I imagine it will get tougher and tougher to get in over the next few years.

Who knows, once the Ipad3's come out, it might jump into the top 15 😉

I think the new medical education building, and the new hospital are big draws. Also, the jump up in the US news ranking probably mattered to some people as well.

After interviewing at three CA schools, I think UCI compared very favorably. For me, the weather, location, friendly faculty and students, facilities, and technology integrated in the curriculum made UCI the most appealing. On campus housing is nice too!

However, I think the school could do a better job of selling itself on interview day. I would have liked to tour the hospital and heard more about the clinical years. Additionally, they could have provided more information about opportunities for research and the use of the ipads/ultra sounds (since they are unique to UCI). Finally, they had comparably more interviewees in attendance (UCSF only had 9 people each day, and the dean at UCD met with us in groups of 5), which made things feel less personable. I also thought Dr. Peterson asking us to tell everyone something unique about ourselves first thing in the morning felt a little elementary schoolish.

I agree with Rhino,

they definitely could put a bit more work on their interview day. I wasn't too upset about the number of applicants but there was still a lot I would have liked to see (it got covered in revisist day... but should have been interview day).

And that whole 'interesting thing' was super annoying. But I did like judging the people who still said their interesting fact was an EC even when explicitly told not to. (they did that a LLU too; one students interesting fact was "I stabbed myself with a pencil" and that was it- no explanation, no nothing)

Do accepted students need to fill out anything other than the financial aid and housing application? I haven't heard anything from the school, but don't schools usually want our transcripts, health info etc? Also, anyone know when we should accept our financial aid package or what happens if you accept the package and end up withdrawing? Thanks!

Usually they send out the request for transcripts/health forms later. But if you're worried call them.

Go ahead and accept your financial aid. You won't sign your MPN (Master Promissory Note) until you get to school in the fall and have a federal loan entrance interview (lecture). (you actually may complete the MPN before but they don't certify it until then)

If you apply, and accept but not complete the MPN and actually receive the loans because you withdrew and are attending another school they will be automatically canceled.

Which brings us to another point, try to budget for all your moving expenses and apartment deposit/first months rent. You won't get your loans money until the first week of classes (eg after orientation).
