Thank you REL and looneytune, I got there just fine.

This school was amazing! I hope they love me just as much as I love them. I mean the tour they gave us of the building and of Celebration hospital left me wanting more LOL. I loved playing with the DaVinci and doing the laproscopic exercises. It made me almost want to go into surgery. Anyways, great interview day. Props to REL and the entire med school for making it an unforgettable day. Hope I hear good news come December 21st. :xf:

DocTraveler, You took the words out of my mouth. Man those robots were fun to play with! I also interviewed the 29th..... UCF is now my #1 school.... Could not have dreamed up a better interview experience.......

Thank you REL and the rest of UCF COM

I received a phone call from REL on October 16th letting me know where I stood in the pool, but I haven't heard anything since. I was wondering if anybody that also received a call that day has heard anything since then?

I have fallen behind in the update calling. I hope to make some calls today and will also do some emails to help catch up....

Wow, thank you for the response Rel. That seems to be very generous. I was wondering how it would be possible to check the status of my application or any news about it?

Thank You

We constantly include 3-5 OOS in each interview day.

Hi REL,

Are there any interview dates scheduled for 2011 that aren't on Fridays? I would like to send an "in the area" email (I'm from NJ) but my other event is on a Friday as well.

Thanks for all of your help throughout this entire process! It makes things so much less stressful. 🙂

Almost all of our interview days are designed for Friday's; however, the November and December timeframe is "chopped" up by holidays and the annual AAMC meeting. We schedule Monday interview's during this period so that we dont lose too much time in this wacky MD admissions process. I do not believe that we currently have any Monday interview days on the remainder of the schedule unless we go beyond the final March 11 date.

Wait listed in the upper third :xf: but who knows, maybe will get pushed downward as more qualified applicants are interviewed later in the season. i hope i get pushed upward instead 😉

REL- how many people are left to interview? is it around 235? you stated that around 115 are currently on the wait-list and that you interview a total of 350 students.

Good morning, I have a question for Mr. Larkin (or anyone else who's completed the secondary).

I've been checking the status of my applictation on the UCF site and it's been stuck at "File Complete - Ready for Review" for a few weeks. Is this normal, or is it just the large volume of applicants UCF has to review? Thank you for your correspondence in this thread!

I wouldn't call this a 'wait-list.' As he said during the interview, each applicant is given a certain score by the ad comm. During the first screening, only the people with top scores get admitted. As the season progresses, they're going to start making offers for people with lower scores. He said that if you were in the top third, there's a very strong chance of getting admitted.

I might be wrong, but REL will probably weigh in on this soon enough. Btw, congratulations on making it this far! 🙂

I submitted my secondary early October and got an interview early November. I remember being put in the AORTA status for around 2 weeks so maybe "File Complete-Ready for Review" for around 2 weeks. I think since it's later in the cycle it probably takes longer than 2 weeks hence the reason you're still stuck in that status. I'm in the same boat for other schools so we just have to be patient! :luck:

Thanks for the encouragement and hope! I love UCF it's by far my top choice in florida!! Amazing staff, students, program, and facilities. 👍👍

I've seen you around on pretty much every thread on SDN jk. But seriously >20k threads is too many. I'm from Chicago. I reciprocate the Indian solidarity thing we have going.

Btw didn't realize you'd applied to UCF. I've seen you around on the Chicago school threads of the schools I've applied to in your city. 🙂. Good luck with everything.

Can I assume from your username you are Indian?

If so good luck to a fellow indian. 🙂

Congratulations PurpleSky! I'm right with you, and I was pondering the same idea! In attempts to figure it out, I tried to appreciate a trend based on last year's thread:

One applicant interviewed in January, was waitlisted in the middle of the upper 1/3, moved up to upper half of the upper 1/3 in April, made some sort of top 20 list, and was accepted in June. Someone else started off in the upper half of the middle 1/3 in October and made it to the bottom half of the upper 1/3 in April; he/she was placed in that same top 20 list and never spoke of an acceptance in the thread. A third applicant was placed within the upper 1/3 (assuming the lower half) and was accepted in May. It sounds like people from the upper half of the upper 1/3 were being accepted and then in April-June, they started accepting people whom were originally from the lower half of the upper 1/3 and the top people in the middle 1/3. Let's see how the increased class size affects this all!

Does anyone know anything else about the movement of the wait list? Or shall I say hold list 😛?

Wow thanks DrBoshKosh for the insight!!

That was really smart of you to check last year's thread, the idea never crossed my mind. Based on your analysis it seems like we have a fairly good chance of eventually being accepted, I hope it's the same for this year! I loooved UCF! I guess we can only wait and see the new year has in store for us 😀

Awesome analysis. Just based on this, I would love to have you as a classmate (assuming we both make it in:xf:)

Did you notice any trend on when the people in the top half of upper third (ie. upper 1/6) of the list were being accepted?

That was me! Reapplying this year and, thus far, "Eligible for Interview Selection."

I have also read through last years thread, but I'm stuck with a few questions. If the waiting list is actually just a ranked list based on people's admission committee scores, then there must be a substantial overlap in scores, and since they don't always pick the top 5 or so people to accept, there must be more to the list than just scores? Also, it would be nice to think that they will accept everyone within the top half of the top third, but can we be sure that this is true? Finally, if the list is based purely on scores, then there is no purpose to submitting updates of any sort right?
P.S.- UCF is unbelievable, the school is breathtaking, and I wish I could just not finish undergrad and move there now.

not completely sure that it would be pointless to send in updates...

during my interview day, REL stated that they sometimes dont choose the top of the list. this was mainly to try and maintain their 20% OOS ratio, but i would think that a significant update (such as a publication, or medical mission trip, versus just transcripts) might help you jump a spot or two in favor, without the admissions committee actually rescoring you. this is just speculation based on the fact that they do not use absolute guidelines for choosing applicants off of the "wait" list. REL or anybody with better info please correct me if im wrong.

i was speaking to REL about an update that I intend to send. since i am taking a year off, i am currently doing clinical research/shadowing with an emergency medicine physician, i plan on adding another letter to my file. since i have no new grades and cannot maintain/improve on the leadership roles i held during undergrad, this would be a significant update to my application. he encouraged me to send it in prior to my admission committee review date (post-interview). SO if you do have updates, they are most useful to the committee before they actually score you. but i wouldnt say there is no point in submitting, so if u guys have something worthwhile to say, then say it!

i too was curious about the potential overlap in applicant scores. since the maximum score is 70, i assume that many students score between 40-60 (3x14= 42, 4x14 = 56). If they have to choose a student out of maybe 5 students that share the same score, they may prefer students based on their IS/OOS classification, racial/gender diversity, interest in UCF, or significant post-review updates. if it were very late in the cycle, they may choose the "waitlisted" applicant who is most similar to the accepted applicant who gave up the spot, just to maintain class diversity and what the accepted person might have brought to the incoming class.

again, more speculation on my part, but it would be how i would operate if i were on the admissions committee. 👍

From what it sounded like, the top half of the upper 1/3 stands a chance of being called any day that the adcom is dishing out acceptances. Does everyone else agree with this? I can deal with that assumption 😛

That was me! Reapplying this year and, thus far, "Eligible for Interview Selection."

Haha yup; I tried to keep it confidential! Any other comments about it all since you have the inside scoop?!

Thanks!

I would probably say to hang tight and keep the faith when it comes to any waitlist since there are mental ups and downs while waiting. The waiting, no doubt, is THE TOUGHEST PART.

Also, I think the key is to stay positive and not get too down. At times, it's discouraging seeing others on the waitlist above you get "the call." But you never know if they'll accept that spot or not. If they don't...then you're just one step closer to "the call."

I hope this helps!

Interview Invite! I got the invite by phone which was a nice touch. Also they honored my in-the-area email in case anyone else was thinking about sending one of those.

Hello everyone. I just corresponded with REL Larkin, and was able to submit a primary application to UCF. Do they screen for Secondary application?
Can anyone send me the link or provide the secondary application questions via PM?

Thanks,

^Thanks for your advice as always. Your so helpful. I posted up in the "what are my chances" area today. I think the concensus is that I did not apply to enough "middle tier" schools. One person commented that only 3 of my apps are to reasonable schools, while the rest were longshots.

Interviewing in January! Couldnt be happier! UCF is my #1 choice as I grew up right down the street from the main campus. Go knights :xf::xf:

I applied to University of Miami(UM). FSU, USF, UF, UM. And I will finish the secondary for UCF in the next day or two.

Did anyone else who interviewed on 11/29 get an email from REL just a bit ago? I seriously freaked 😱 out and thought it was a rejection or wait list since I expect an acceptance to be made through a nice phone call. Very nearly had a heart attack! Can't wait for tomorrow though...hoping for good news.

I withdrew my application today because I accepted another offer.

I was on the top 1/2 of the middle third. I hope it helps someone 🙂

GOOD LUCK ALL! :luck::luck:

Ok. So you had applied to those others before??? I think I musta missed them on mdapplicants profile or something. So I was confused. I think I saw FSU, USF, and UF, but hadn't seen Miami. Guess it was there but I just missed it.

That's strange that you haven't heard from USF or Miami yet though.
I just applied this cycle. Its my first Application Cycle. Just wanted to clarify.

Thank you for being courteous to others. And I'm guessing you are referring to Umiami. Congratulations on that one. A lot of family friend's children have gone there or are there now and they all love it. Additionally, knew quite a few kids in the past at that school from other means on here on SDN and from USF days and they all love it there. So I'm sure you will have a great experience there. Good luck with your future endeavors and again thanks for being courteous enough to give others a chance. 🙂

My pleasure! And yes I am going to MIAMI 🙂

lower half of the upper third, will likely drop my spot as soon as I get a legit seat somewhere

^ I applied to all the other schools via AMCAS awhile ago. I just recently added UCF(when I made the post about it a few days ago). Just submitted the secondary today.

Hopefully its not too late.

Quick question for those of you who've gotten interviews: how long did it take to get an invite? I've been complete since Mid-November, moved into AORTA the first week or so of December. I will continue to wait, but I'm pretty excited as I got a pretty encouraging e-mail saying I had a very competitive app. Thanks!

I was complete around Oct 1st or something and got an interview Nov 1st. I think I was in AORTA for maybe 2 weeks? You should check the previous pages of this forum, I think there's multiple postings about AORTA status and REL saying how that a good majority of those in AORTA status get an interview 🙂
Good luck!!!!! :luck:

Good to know, I'm assuming the holidays have delayed the interview invites a bit. Thanks for the encouragement, and the reply!

Yes that is correct. UCF was closed over the holidays from my understanding.

To my understanding and REL I'm sure can better expand, you get 10-15 days in AORTA review which is like an initial screening. Then if you pass that status it is any time from when you get into Eligible for interview and the end of interview season when you'll get an interview if you get one. However, getting in EFI status does not guarantee that you will get an interview, just that you have a chance for one.

Also REL posted some numbers earlier with regards to how many were EFI, how many were interviewed at that point in time, on the hold list post interview, etc. at some point. But you will have to dig through the pages of this thread to see it. It was like some point in Nov. when he posted it.

The fact that you looked this up and typed all of this up to ridicule someone doesn't make you look better than them. Get off your high horse and stop checking up on others. You only need to worry about yourself.

REL,

Can you please tell as to how many seats are open as of now?

+1 with all the posters above. I did get a kick out of it though, but its something you laugh at to yourself, not blow it up on a forum...

Well, I have been stuck in AORTA status for months now. I am planning on sending an Update/letter of intent to UCF. it is one of my top two schools which are essentially tied (due to area and program), and I would be happy to drop everything for UCF.

I was wondering whether it would be better to send my update/letter of intent through snail mail or through email.

thoughts? (REL especially).

I have some great stuff in the update so hopefully it will help with that interview.

-BA

REL told us at the interview that they do not accept letters of intent and interest but that they do accept update letters.

What I mean by this is that if you are writing a letter that just basically is a love letter telling them why they are the greatest and you are going to drop the whole world to be there, they don't care for it. REL said that they've gotten burned in the past so its useless and means nothing to him and them.

However, that being said, he said they accept pre interview and post interview precommittee decision update letters with substantial updates. By substantial updates that means things like fall semester grades, new volunteer activities, new research stuff, new publications or awards, etc. etc.

So if you are going to write an interest letter write one that says updates and then has one concise paragraph saying your interest in the school but make sure to write only if you are including updates and not writing a pure letter of intent/interest.

Well i have my grades from the fall,
i was going to mention i have a publication in submission

hopefully that will help.

also, dont pay attention to that dude above. s/he is a jerk.

-BA

REL,

Can you please tell as to how many seats are open as of now?

1. 45 are filled, 35 open.

2. File updates are always welcome until the committee has made an admit/wait decision.

3. Letters of interest are of little to no value. Unfortunately the are often sent to several schools by applicants, when we do find this out (the schools) it speaks to the integrity of the applicant and becomes harmful to them.

4. Eligible for Interview Selections - There are only two ways you can go from here: you get a call for an interview (chances EFI to Interview Scheduled) or you dont get a call by the ?3rd? week of February when we should be done with invitations. If you dont get the call, you will get an email letting you know that we were unable to include you in an interview group this year. About all that you can do while in EFI status is evaluate your application for weaknesses and submit meaningful updates (volunteering, term GRADE SHEETS (via EMAIL) ---- NOT OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS.

It looks like we will end with about 3350 total verified applicants; we do intend to interview ~325-350.
