Does anyone know how much time you have to decide on your interview date at Pritzker? I just got an interview invitation, but I'm thinking I want to wait until I hear from other schools so that I can fly from one city to the next and not have to go back to my hometown between each interview. Hopefully, this will help save on airfare.

sorry to hear it. for the record, i dont think in-state/OOS matters much for Prtizker

You are better off not going there. Frankly it was unpleasant.

South side is rough, and the hospital is angry, broke and slashing any program that does not generate lots of cash. Thus, psych, family med, peds are all lacking. Internal med has cut its beds in half, the ER has shut down a wing. Staff is laid off to the point where attending's complain to students that care is poor. No matter what the school says, the hospital (and this is what counts) does not care about the poor.

Teachers are rare, and the gifted ones soon leave. Attendings talk about leaving, are leaving, in therapy, or are getting divorced. Any of the graduating students who can leave do so, and a sad few end up staying. Residents in some programs quit they are so unhappy. Do you know what it must be like to get to this point! When you apply for residency the "other" schools describe UChicago as "malignant" - and that says it all. You find yourself defending a place that you also thought was poor, a bad place to be in when applying for residency.

Consider, a student murdered (basically on campus), orientation with a police officer telling one how to avoid getting hurt. Crime is a real issue, check out http://www.hydepark.org/hpkcc/whistlestop.htm I have a whistle they gave me at orientation, you blow this if you feel in danger and hope someone else will come help you. Not likely. You also learn how to roll up on the ground so the stabbing is not as bad ...

I imagine this post will get deleted, and expect the PR office at admissions to start posting replies. Sad really, they spend more money on PR and admissions than on the students. They have a real machine for getting us in.

If you get in - god help you. I guess the best bet is to just keep your head down, talk to no one, and you will be a star. They like folks who follow the leader, keep to the company line, and above all sing the praises of Pritzker at all times. Find outside friends, complain to them, and to everyone else say how lovely life is. I will leave the positive spin to others, I find these threads to be one sided.

That's not the story I've heard from people who have gone to the U of Chicago. Rough neighborhood yes, but most people I have talked to loved it. Why so bitter?

I knew there was something up when they cut their class size to 88. I understand their reasoning behind it but it made it seem like they only care about themselves. But, I guess I am still applying here.

I love the academics at the University of Chicago, but what you talk about I have already known....for years. I agree that there is just too much positive spin sometimes in these threads. I know that the clinical years at Northwestern are much better. I guess if I am fortunate enough to get accepted at either of them, then I will be able to evaluate all that on my own!

Still a long way to go though (sigh)

These are valid points. I've been aware of the fact that they have had financial problems. However, they are building a new hospital and other buildings that will benefit students either directly or indirectly. In addition, I agree with you that they don't care about the poor. The reality is hospitals would make no money if they catered to people who couldn't pay.

Could any students expand on this post regarding Pritzker's financial situation. The one thing that makes no sense is that they offer lots of scholarship money. So, I wouldn't say they don't spend a fair amount of money on students. However, perhaps this is to get us to come to an adverse environment?😱

I agree with you. It reminds me of the recent controversy with U Miami Medical School ditching Jackson Memorial Hospital (always bankrupt) and purchasing a big private hospital across the street, for their private patients. The school is making much more money now staying financially solid.

Wow, I was not aware of this. Chicago's new hospital is supposed to be the biggest in the world and pretty posh. They could be attempting to follow Miami's model. This would help them out a lot. My sister just graduated from Northwestern. I know Feinberg isn't in Evanston, but I like that area a lot. I have never been to Hyde park. You are from Chicago I believe. Putting money aside, right now which would you choose? Downtown Chicago is pretty hard to beat. However, the academics at Chicago are amazing. However, safety is important and I like to go out. Feinberg is amongst the top when one considers these two factors.

I am having a very difficult time choosing between these two, and you just described my problem! I would probably choose Northwestern, though. I know the area very well. The law school is close by and you have one of Loyola campuses almost across the street, so there is a good variety of students. The area is extremely safe, vibrant and clean. Theaters, Restaurants, Clubs and the Chicago Art Institute are all within walking distance. Like you said, Downtown Chicago is pretty hard to beat.

I also know that the faculty really caters to med students during their clinical years (i have heard it as a "complaint" from residents and interns!). U Chicago academics are perhaps a bit superior or more "prestigious" but....

Anyway, I don't mean to put down U Chicago (especially in this thread). It is one of my top choices. After all, Hopkins is in a fairly dangerous area of Baltimore and Yale......well, like the old lightbulb joke says : How many Yale students does it take to change a lightbulb ? None. New Haven looks better in the dark. 😀

haha, I hadn't heard that Yale joke in a while. LOL Art Institute is sick.

First, if you look at that poster complaining you will notice that was his one post ... do we have a northwesterner on here??!?!?!

Haha, someone asked about the financial status here ... umm ... i don't think ANYWHERE can compete ... not even Mayo ... I mean ... tons of people are on full rides, some people even get a stipend above full tuition (and no ... they are not MD/PhD's) ... BUT i dont want you to think that Pritzker wants to throw money around ... they want to support their students so that they can pursue whatever they are passionate about and not have to worry about debt hanging over them. Classmates have been freed up to do amazing things in years off, pursue other degrees, take a year off to write a book etc. Pritzker is loaded ... but they don't want you to love them b/c of their money ... they want you to love them for who they are.

In terms of the new hospital .. yea it's going to be huge and posh. And it's being built in record speed ... BUT even though we are going to have this new amazing hospital (and I should add the Children's hospital is only about 5 years old and our DCAM - the main outpatient center - is only 10 years old) you really should not judge a school by how new and posh it's facilities are. Yes, it is nice, but what matters are the docs and people there. I remem being on the interview trail and seeing amazing hospitals (Mayo stands out) and then seeing not so great hospitals (UCLA - the old UCLA hospital and Georgetwon stick out) but it's important to remem that a hospital is not a building ... with that said .. we are going to have a pretty sick and amazing hospital haha! And the research buildings (where you can do srp, pursue fellowships etc) are going up like mad. It's a good time to be a Pritzker student!!!!

submitted 7/13
rejected 7/15
took them less than 48 hours to reject me!

I must be in the maybe pile. I submitted and was complete on 7/8/10, still no word. My status says "Your completed application has been sent to the Committee on Admissions for review. We look forward to learning about you and your accomplishments." I guess that's a good thing that I haven't been rejected yet and they are looking at me. I wonder how long they may wait before giving a decision. I would love an opportunity to attend here.

I'm in the same boat, man. I was complete on the 8th and haven't heard anything. Either we're maybes or our applications are lost together somewhere 🙂

Bull. Crap.

The status of my application reads "Application Held for Later Review" and goes on to say, "Your application has been placed on hold for further review later in the application process".

Anybody know what this means?

Probably a maybe. I thought I was but maybe they really haven't reviewed mine yet since they have had it for over a week and still no response.

Maybe not, man. I was in the same boat as you and just got an interview invite a few hours ago. Good luck!

Hey everyone,

I'm recording a podcast episode with Joni in about three hours to answer a few questions. If you have any last-minute questions you want us to cover, let me know (here, PM, email, Twitter, whatever) and we'll try to fit it in.

Take care,
Ben

Re-reviewed in December. 15-25 get interviews off the hold list in the past. Still tough after that to get in post-interview. Check out the 2009-2010 thread for anecdotal experiences. 👍

Well, still not complete here. Hopefully my Committee Letter will go out this week, and then I should be complete almost everywhere. Then, I should get a flurry of news...

Rejected today. Completed 7/8.

Edit: I knew it was a long shot because my GPA is a 3.6, but I was hoping my 39Q MCAT would help. Good Luck to the rest of you.

I'm sorry. However, you didn't get rejected because of your GPA. I'm sure you'll get into other good schools.

Is it true Pritzker rejects applications on the basis of typos and what not? Rumors abound...

If your application looks like a high school student quickly wrote it without even editing it, yes, I think you can expect to be rejected. This is professional school after all.

I had one minor typo of sorts on my PS but it must've been ok since they gave me an interview

i love you chicago. i love deep dish. please keep loving me.

Mmmm... deep dish is so good.

If that is true, I wouldn't have gotten in. I accidentally submitted a non-final draft of my secondary essay (the way the window on my computer cut off the file names made me think they were my final drafts when I opened them and copy-pasted). My "fit for Pritzker" essay had 3 typos/grammar mistakes in it, haha.

Haha but 1-2 typos is a far cry from a rushed high school essay.... :scared:

Just curious anyways since I saw this floating around, seems like just an attempt to explain why highly-qualified applicants are getting rejected.

I think more likely than this is that they have something very specific in mind when they receive applications. Most of us applicants think merely in numbers (MCAT + GPA etc.) but adcoms have something in mind when looking for applicants. And there is some degree of luck to it as well.

rejected today 🙁

invited 6/30, completed and moved to screening on 7/15 (AMCAS wasn't verified until 7/14), rejected 7/23

sGPA 3.73, cGPA 3.70, 35P, lots of clinical experience ECs, year+ of working with underserved minority population with public health research.

this was my first notice back from any of my schools and kinda sad it was a rejection 🙁 hope the other schools look more favorably and at least invite me for an interview!

Well exactly. Of course people will forgive a typo or two (wouldn't you?). But if it's obvious that you didn't spend a respectable amount of time looking over your writing, I would want to reject you for that. That just shows carelessness and a lack of attention to detail. Either that or you just can't write, which is equally questionable.

We can't possibly know what Chicago's looking for, but there are schools that will appreciate your experiences! Sucks about Pritzker, but you'll make it. 🙂

Hey everyone. I was just wondering if anyone went over the word limits for the secondary essays. I noticed that they "suggest" that you limit your essay to a certain number of words. Does anyone know anything about this?? Thanks.

I sort of feel your pain. I was placed on hold until December. I just spent the past hour looking at the 09-10 thread and this essentially means I'm sunk. They will put around 225-250 on hold and only 10% of those will get interviews. Everyone from that thread either got continued, rejected, or waitlisted. I would have rather been rejected.........

yeah that's rough too...it's best for us to just move on, and hope for better news from other schools!

thanks for all the positive encouragement as well from above posters 🙂

Yes,

I'm considering whether or not I should send them an email indicating my desire to withdraw myself from consideration......

I just got my mcat scores back last Tuesday but my status still shows as "mcat hold". I know it probably takes a while but most of my other schools already have my scores. Not sure if I should wait or call them. I don't want them to think I'm too intense here. I'm sure my 32 score will really woo them anyway.

Hey, stay optimistic man. This is just gonna be a small bump on the road, you will see!.. I would also hate to have something "unfinished" and lingering like that, but if this is one of the schools that you really liked, just wait it out! Forget about it and maybe you will have a nice a surprise later on. After all, 10% is better than 0%.

I am still waiting for my Premed Letter, so I will see what kind of response I get from them bastards...

Haha, thanks BrainBuff. It is one of my top choices so I will hold out hope. I'm sure you'll get good news. I hope you get in. It would make me feel okay that I did not get in because of great applicants such as yourself 🙂 There's still Northwestern..... I should probably get to finishing that but I was too bummed about Chicago yesterday to finish it. Did you get the email yesterday too or Friday?

Thanks man, but you know it is a crapshoot game out there, and you are one of those great applicants yourself! 😀 I got the email from Northwestern on Friday and sent the secondary yesterday. I just had to play a little with some essays I already had, so I did not have to spent too much time with the application itself.

The secondary that is killing me is Duke's. I am not finding the motivation and I really do not like the school that much anyway... I know it is awesome, but I spent a couple of summers there while in high school and just did not feel it......I am not trying very hard for that one, to be honest.
