The area immediately around UIC isn't bad. I currently attend the east campus which is 5 blocks from west campus or the medical campus. If you are on Taylor street you are pretty safe there are cops there 24/7 and its a popular area, with bars and tons of restaurants there. The only down fall is that if you head too far from campus(10 blocks or so) you do end up in a less safe area. Its a predominantly hispanic/ african american community but there are always muggings or crime alerts sent out by UIC about that area. So I would say if you are bringing a family with kids, I wouldn't live down there. But that is just my personal opinion. There is always the option of commuting like i do now, roughly an hour ride in from the burbs, but doing that in med school would probably be difficult

Thank you for the information. Hmm since public transportation is so convenient in the city, I hope we can live somewhere safe and not too far.

On a different note, does anyone know if we're going for the interview that begins at 11:30 a.m., when we should expect to be done? I will be trying to make a 6 p.m. flight out of O'hare, and I plan to take a taxi.

Regarding living in the city, there are plenty of nice neighborhoods nearby but it can get pretty pricey. I wish I could point you to places to look, but i'm not that knowledgeable about that stuff since I'm a suburb gal. I would at least suggest trying to find somewhere near the CTA train, the red line runs 24/7. Perhaps some more city dwellers can help you out there.

As for the 11:30am interview group, interviews start around 1 or 2pm I believe and when I called, they told me that I should expect to finish around 4-5pm. If that holds true, that means getting out smack dab during rush hour which is horrendous, especially going north. There is almost no way you are going to be able to make it to O'hare and through the security line for your 6pm flight. I would highly recommend trying to book a later flight.

Is anyone else having problems paying by credit card online?? I've used 6 different credit/debit cards of my mom's and all of they are being rejected. We checked all of them and they are fine and ready to use but the website keeps rejecting them. There has to be something wrong with the website, anyone else have problems??

Guess I'll call admissions tomorrow, Id rather pay online bc mailing in a check will just delay things more!

Question: When I sent in my secondary to UIC, I had noted that I was employed because I had successfully completed my interview and was told that I was due to begin training/work that week, and I thought it would be less hassle than an update letter to say that I'd just started a job. But a month later and complications on their side mean that I haven't even started, and now I'm exasperated that this will probably make me seem intentionally disingenuous to UIC should the issue ever come up.

So now I've decided that it's probably best to send a letter explaining the situation upfront instead of letting it come out as though I was trying to hide it. I may still start the job, but maybe it's better to be safe than sorry. Is that the right attitude? And if so, to which email/snail mail address can I write?

Thanks for the info! The admissions office person actually told me I will be able to make it, saying I will be done no later than 4:30. I won't have any checked luggage and I'm interviewing on a tuesday so maybe it won't be that busy at the security line? Given the rush hour traffic, would it be faster to take the subway instead of a cab?
I already booked my flight and really don't want to pay 200 dollars to make it later 🙁

I got out of my interview by 4pm -- most got out around 4:30pm, but they might have you scheduled for the earlier block of interviews.

I don't know if I would recommend taking a cab though to your airport. It might be faster taking the L train (subway) -- the pink line is right there and from there you can grab the orange (to midway) or blue (to ohare). I would look on online schedules to see how long that will take.... but you would be cutting it very close either way. It is very possible though to make your flight so don't worry too much.

edit: If you do decide to call a taxi, have a taxi number on hand. Once you get your interview schedule, book a taxi to come pick you up at the end of the day. Surprisingly, there is really no taxis in the area and the staff wasn't too helpful about where to pick one up.

Regarding safety in the area -- I found the campus very safe and the apartment buildings were all the students were coming out of. The only problem with the area is lack of things to do IMO. I wouldn't worry about my safety there -- just don't be stupid.

So after reading avoidthetiger's reply, I realized that I did forget about the "L" (CTA train). I agree that that may be the best way to go - check it up online though to make sure you know where you need to get on and off and have a rough idea of the time. It should definitely help avoid some of the rush hour. I didn't mean to scare you about not making your flight, but just from my experience I always try to be at the airport 1.5hrs before my flight just in case. I had to wait 45min one day in the security line and I had no checked baggage. But it also depends on what terminal/airline you are flying. Terminal 1 tends to be super busy, but I'm not that familiar with others. You should be able to make your flight if all goes well, but it will be cutting it pretty close.

Hi Tippy,

I would say that for such a tight schedule, you would want to take the L. The transfer from the pink line to either the Orange line (to Midway) or the Blue Line (to O'hare) is made in the loop. Check online for the scheduling, but you are probably looking at 1 hr. to get to either airport from UIC. Since it'll be rush hour, trains will be frequent, so you won't lose much time waiting for one.

Honestly, a cab would probably get you there in the same amount of time, but for a lot more money. There is a stretch of highway on the 94 (to O'hare) and on the 55 (to Midway) where everything comes to a stop and go. The worst torture ever when you are trying to make a flight.

If you are flying out of Midway, you might consider the cab since UIC isn't too far from Midway... it'll probably get you there in 40-50mins. You'll still hit that stretch of highway, so hold tight.

If you are going to O'Hare, you have a longer trip ahead of you. I would suggest the pink line to the blue line. Alternatively, because taking the pink to the blue line would be going into the Loop only to come back out (wasting a precious few minutes), you might consider catching a cab and having it take you up Damen or Ashland to the Damen Blue Line or Division/Ashland Blue Line stops, respectively. This will probably only save you like 5-10 mins. at an extra cost of ~$10, but it's something to consider. :luck: to you! 🙂

Hi guys,

So I know this whole process is definitely a waiting game and it can go months before hearing anything solid .. but I'm wondering .. I sent in my secondary late July (not sure when it was complete), have decent stats, and wrote pretty strong essays .. and every time I go to check the status website, I'm still in "Application in Process." I haven't checked it daily or anything, so I don't know if I was ever "Applicant" and then got switched back over .. but I'm just wondering if anyone else who applied that early also hasn't been switched over to "Applicant?" I have no idea what to make of it .. I haven't heard anything from the school, no rejection letter or anhything .. so just wondering if anyone else is in this limbo too ..

I have a ton of family in Chicago/IL, and would love to go anywhere in this state .. come on UIC!

YIKES! i just got decision pending, post interview...hopefully this is a good sign.

thats interesting...i've been "applicant in process" since the beginning (~7 weeks ago). i don't think i was ever "application in progress". its sooo confusing!!!

I got Decision Pending too. Doesn't this mean WL according to last year's tread?

i hope not! i thought it meant our application is under review again. i also think its a little early for a waitlist status. Plus, they won't say anything for certain until the 15th, so hopefully it'll say decision made + additional correspondence then. *fingers crossed*

Hi everyone! I decided to post this time line (posted on past years' threads) that was of great service to me this past cycle. I hope that it finds you well. 🙂

START

I. Submit Primary.

II. Wait for the email from UIC giving you your login information for the Applicant Status Check site (usually arrives within 2 weeks of submitting your primary): https://mercury.comd.uic.edu/appstat

III. Login, and check your status in the second page.

---

A. "Application Not Complete" = Secondary not yet complete.

B. "Application in Process" = You are complete. --> Goto C.

C. "Applicant in Process" = Your file is being reviewed, 3 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Select Interview Date" = You are good enough for an interview. --> Goto D.
2. "Application in Process" = You are not good enough to grant an interview yet, but might be later on in the cycle. Check back periodically. --> Go back to B.
3. "Final Decision Made ..." = You are not good enough. --> Goto X.
D. "Select Interview Date" (A grid of dates shows up) = Call and schedule an interview date, after which "Interview Scheduled on ... " shows up. After the interview, Goto F.

F. "Decision Pending" = File pending review at the next adcom meeting (every 3rd Thursday of the month). There are 2 options from here, depending on the month:
1. Before May. --> Goto M.
2. On or After May. --> Goto N.
M. Before May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " --> Goto S.
2. "Decision Pending" (No Status Change) + "We'll keep reviewing you" Email (a few days later) = You are a good candidate, but not good enough to grant an acceptance yet. UIC will keep reviewing you at every adcom meeting. --> Go back to F.
N. On or After May, 2 Possible Status Changes:
1. "Final Decision Made ... " You are (very likely) rejected. --> Goto X.
2. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. --> Goto Y.
S. There are 2 additional conditions from here:
1. There is an "Additional Correspondences" Tab in the upper-right corner on your status page AND you get a CBC Email (a few days later) = You are (very likely) accepted. --> Goto Z.
2. There is no "Additional Correspondences" Tab and/or you don't get the CBC Email = Rejection. [Note: This is tricky. The CBC email usually comes a few days after (1-4 is the consensus) the status change. Be patient. Sometimes, the email never comes, which might be because you already had a CBC done due to an acceptance at another school. In some instances, the CBC Email even comes after the snail-mail. If after a week, neither the tab nor the CBC email shows up, it's very likely a rejection. You've probably already received snail-mail by now alerting you to it.] --> Goto X.
X. "Final Decision Made ..." = Rejection 🙁 ... Wait for a "Thin Letter" via snail-mail.

Y. "Applicant is Waitlisted" = Waitlisted. :xf: ... The CBC Email no longer acts as an indicator of an acceptance. If you get accepted off of the waitlist, then Goto Z, else Goto X.

Z. "Final Decision Made ..." + "Additional Correspondences" Tab + CBC Email = (very likely) Acceptance 😀 ... Wait for a "Fat Packet" via snail-mail. [Note: Sometimes CBC emails come after the packet. CBC emails also might never arrive if you got an acceptance to another school that also does CBC through AMCAS.]

*** PLEASE BEAR IN MIND that this info came from last year's thread! Therefore, the whole process may have changed since then, and there is no guarantee to this information. But it worked for me (even though I was given the same warning) and the time line was accurate.

Good look to all of you class of 2015 applicants!! 😀[/QUOTE/]

according to this thing, we're fine for now with decision pending...:luck:

Absolutely NOT. The waitlist does not get made until even the last acceptances are given out for the cycle and that is not until the mid JUNE!!!!!!!!!!! you guys are all fine!😛

This was circulated from year to year but no one posted it here (not that I know of) so I am going to do and hopefully this helps clear things up for you guys:

ONE DISCLAIMER THAT I WILL ADD: Most of the above does not hold true for late interviews and acceptances! (I personally bypassed most of the above steps)...just something to know!
This held true for the last year and it seems like that they have kept this format!
GL:luck: to you all!
As always, PMs are welcome! 😀

haha UDPreMed...you beat me to it:laugh:...but I think it will be even more apparent and prevent unnecessary questions in the thread!!

Hey, does anyone know when the interview will end? I am in the morning session.

Hey folks!! 🙂

I'm a third-year med student in Peoria. If anyone has questions on the admissions process for UIC or what the awesome (and totally inexpensive) life of an Urbana-Rockford-Peoria tracker is like, feel free to message me.

Good luck everyone! :luck:

Is the 2010-2011 MSAR (which has stats from 2008-2009 entering class) a good indicator of how acceptances pan out? For example, they interviewed 547 instate applicants and 217 matriculated - subtracting the GPPA people, that's 193 accepted from interviews. So if they accept roughly 2X the incoming class, would it be 386/547? That's a 70% chance!! (for instate). I hope that's true :xf:

I think thats as good an indication as we are going to get - short of the school actually telling us which will never happen

Does anyone know how realistic the $68,000/year non-resident tuition figures are? I find it hard to believe that 20% of the class is non-resident with those unreasonable fees.

Any thoughts? Know any non-residents who go to this school? I really would love to go to this school but it is hard to imagine paying an extra 20K more than most schools.

Same I'm interested in learning more about this too. Unlike with my other interviews, I will def be paying close attention to the financial aid speech for UIC. Even if I live like a bum I'll still be paying ~$85K/year to go to this school. That's a scary thought esp considering some poor souls fail out of med schools, really screwed over in debt.

They don't talk about it, I didn't know until reading the aid packet on the flight home, talk about a buzz kill.

Does anyone know how often they review applications? My status changed from "applicant" to "application" on 10/7 🙁 I'm just wondering how long I have to wait and what my chances are.

I feel like the 20% OOStaters most have a. not gotten in anywhere else b. really wanted to live in Chicago c. where working on establishing residency in IL and have/had before or will once school starts

I can't imagine going to UIC paying the OOS prices as the facilities seem alot more outdated than other schools I have seen. The school is great at the IS price though.

I would go to the interview, see if you get accepted, and then discuss financial aid options with the staff. I think priority one is getting in though.

Already interviewed, I find t hard to believe people got in here and nowhere else, this deff is not a safety, but yes I do need to get accepted first 🙂

haha, I guess I can't read. But I would surprise if this is the only school OSS got into too... so it most be for the love of Chicago... but it's a hefty price to pay. good luck getting an acceptance though!

COA is about 91-92K/year....that's HUGE. It's very daunting...At UIC, we didn't get a financial aid speech---rightfully so, with a fairly large OOS interview pool, I doubt they'd want to scare us away with tuition fees that are higher than other IL schools' COA! lol.

All that being said, I hope to get accepted here and would love to go here, even as OOS (money aside)!

I assume that, given the unfortunate fact that October began on a Friday, we will have to wait until next week (the third Thursday of the month) for post-interview news.

Does anybody have reason to believe that we might hear something before then?

I was wondering the exact same thing. The admissions office is super friendly there, so I've been toying with the idea of calling and asking when we might expect to hear back... but I still haven't worked up the courage. 🙂

I am going to venture a guess and say its going to be Oct 21st this year. 😕

Interview invite today! Does anyone know if there is any difference between what campus you interview at? Is it a better idea just to pick the closest date?

I suggest picking the closest date, better chances you have of getting accepted due to the class size at this point...where you interview bears no weight on your assignment to a site.

Makes no dif which campus you interview at. Granted, you'll only get a tour of the one you're visiting, but it's best to interview early. I interviewed chicago even though I wanted the UPR track, and it worked out for me.

I didn't choose the closest date, but there wasn't that much of a difference when I got the invite. The earliest for Chicago was 2 weeks after the earliest overall. But I live closer to Chicago so it's just more convenient for me and my wallet to go there than anywhere else. Its a couple days after thanksgiving weekend, hopefully all the interviewers and adcoms will be refreshed and happier so they'll give more acceptances 🙂

The director of admission at UIC told us our files would be going to the committee by the end of the month..so we should hear around then (This was in October).

so i was looking over my submitted application, and i just realized i did not indicate a lab component for my advanced level biology class, i am a biology major so have taken advanced labs but the advanced lecture i listed did not have a lab section... was this a requirement? i called UIC, but the counselors are busy, so I'm sending out an email, but was hoping for a quick answer from somewhere...

For those that interviewed in Chicago, was parking provided at all? I got the letter but all it says is: Be here at this time, find travel directions at this URL. This is probably the most minimal amt of info i've gotten regarding an interview confirmation.

Generally how long after being complete do you hear anything about an interview?

I submitted my secondary at the end of July and got an interview during the middle of september.

I was wondering if anybody could tell me how an applicant is reviewed after the interview. Is the interview added to the secondary app and amcas app and then looked at as a whole. or is the decision made soley dependent on the applicant's interview. 😕

From what I understood from my interviews (from what the assistant dean said personally to me) and other general tidbits over the net and books, you are invited to an interview if the school deems you good enough to become part of their incoming class, which is determined by you primary and secondary application. Then the final step is the interview, which in my opinion gets the final say on your file since to my knowledge and what people have posted so far on the thread, interviews at the UICOMs are closed file.

Then again, I do not know the specifics of the UICOM committee meetings where your file is reviewed to make the final decision after the interview. I hope this sort of answered your question.

Yeah, got to look at the wallet too 🙂, and yeah two weeks is not going to make a huge difference but a month or more would have! Best of luck!:luck::xf:

Hey y'all. And congrats to everyone who got an invite/acceptance!

I've been away for a while (not really "away," so much as myopically immersed in the trivial banalities of my quotidian existence), but I was wondering if people could help me out, as behind and ill-informed as I may be.

I'm an OS with par to sub-par stats, and my Supp. was "complete" around 9/13. I'm still listed as "Application is in Progress," but I only just started checking today. Since I'm not even "Applicant in Process" yet, and haven't heard anything back, I'm starting to feel nervous.

Thoughts? Reassurances? Well-meaning but ultimately hollow platitudes and condolences regarding a lifelong dream deferred?

I submitted everything on 9/3 but they didn't download my LOR's until around 9/15 (which was when my application was finally complete). I just switched to "applicant in status" 2 days ago. Hope that helps!
