Are there any other OOS that have been accepted/decided to go here? I'm pretty much set on going here, I reallly really liked the school and the people and Chicago seems like a great city, so just seeing if anyone else was out there. Good luck to everyone else!!

There are plenty of out-of-staters in my class. I would say actually out of the 49 we have, 1/3 of us are out of state. The majority of out of staters are from California (we have probably 7 from CA); there are others from states like Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, Iowa, and myself from Minnesota.

I'm pre-interview and my status just changed to "A final decision was made on your application on ..." (you guys know the rest) So, I guess I can assume that this is a rejection, right? Has anyone who received an invite ever seen this on their status page or is it always an interview date grid for the interviewees? I was really hoping for an invite here and guess I'm hanging on to some shred of hope for dear life 🙁

There are tons of OOS here in Chicago. 😍 I'm not one of them, but many of my friends and classmates are from lots of different places.

yayy I'm super excited. they just sweetened the deal with a non-resident scholarship so I'm pretty much set on going to UIC yay 🙂

Hey, congrats on the scholarship!! Do you mind if I ask how you got the non-resident scholarship? Did you ask for it or was it offered to you in your admissions packet? I'm OOS, have been accepted, but will possibly withdraw since OOS tuition is SO expensive.

LOL, WAYYY ahead of you, buddy. Withdrew my seat back in Oct after seeing that CoA was ~95K. Didn't know about OOS scholarships but I think that would hardly make a difference when my state school's tuition costs ~10K a year.

Haha, you're lucky you have a state with that tuition rate...I have a NYS school acceptance, so that helps, but I'd consider UIC over it.

Heyy, thanks 🙂 I'm sure admissions is all ready to kill me now for just posting about it but yeah I had nooo idea they even had these scholarships but the letter just basically said that I was selected for 1 of 25 college of medicine non-resident scholarships offered with admission..."the committee members believe that your diverse backgrounds and strong overall qualifications, for medical school will enrich our Class of 2015, and our student body. Given our mission, we strive to recruit individuals, like you, to attend our medical school..." And so forth. I had no idea about this and didn't submit anything extra. But I was accepted back in November, and got my placement late December so it's been a while since I've been accepted so maybe just wait it out? Hope that helps!

I was in the first round of acceptees--back in October. Did it come just now or with your acceptance? Thanks for your info--I'll email them once I get a financial aid package..and we'll see what happens. Congrats again!

it just came in now 🙂

what does the status "decision pending" mean? does that mean they've already reviewed my app and I am on the wait list or the committee has yet to decide on my app? I have already interviewed and it was roughly 2 weeks ago.

Thanks for any input ppl!

I don't think anyone knows what it means. Those of us who haven't interviewed also have either the "decision pending" or "interview decision pending" status.

adcom meeting tomorrow?

I have my fingers crossed that the adcom is meeting today. I met with the UHP department personally about two weeks ago and they assured me an answer this month. I just hope it is a positive one.

It means you're pre-decision status. If it changes to "a decision has been made" tomorrow, it means you most likely got in. The adcom meets tomorrow.

My status just changed to:

A final decision was made on your application on . Please allow two-weeks to receive the correspondence in the mail. If you do not receive this correspondence in two-weeks, please contact the Admissions Office. No decision will be given over the telephone.

This is pre-interview, so I'm assuming this is a rejection 🙁. I really don't understand the whole rejection via snail mail... wouldn't it just save time, paper, and postage by posting the rejection on the status page??

I'm sad... I really liked this school...

PS: I like how they don't even bother to put the date where it says "A final decision was made on your application on ."

They will put the date in once they actually send the letter. It'll be the same date the letter is dated. Anyway, sorry about the rejection and good luck with other schools!:xf:

I was just wondering what the UHP department was. If they can be of any help, I'd love to talk to them. I interviewed but have been waiting for a decision for about three months now...maybe they forgot/lost me? 😕

Best of luck to all you

Still 'decision pending' for me. This is the first time my application is going through an adcom meeting and it's so nerve wrecking! I can't imagine going through it more than once or twice. Good luck everyone!

I hear you... This is my 3rd ADCOM meeting... It's horrible!

In past months, there were some status changes around 11:30 AM PST. But there were also changes later in the afternoon. I hope today is the day!:xf:

Oh awesome! 🙂 *fingers crossed* for something in the mail...haha.. Probably will jinx myself

I'm IS and was accepted with the October group last year, but I didn't get my scholarship offer until March or April. Needless to say, I definitely wasn't expecting it but it was surely a nice surprise.

Thanks mybubbles14 for your input--it's greatly appreciated. As an IS applicant, what offer did you receive, if you don't mind me asking.

I'm OOS and I assume an OOS tuition scholarship is just the amount to reduce OOS tuition to IS levels?

are we sure that the adcom is indeed meeting today? today is the last thurs of this month.. but there should have been status changes by now no? AHHHHHHHHHHHH the wait is driving me crazyyyy :scared::scared::scared:

Good luck to those waiting on a decision today! :luck:I'm nervous for you! My meeting will be next month. AHHH! :xf:

How do you guys know when your meeting will be? I interviewed on 2/16 at the Peoria campus and my status just says "Decision Pending." I'm assuming 8 days would be pushing my luck for finding out though.

It takes "about" 4-6 weeks on average for most schools to come to a decision on your file (at the earliest)...There have been exceptions either way, ie: 2-3 weeks or 8-10 weeks, sometimes 12 weeks.

I was accepted here but will not be on the Chicago campus. Is there a difference between campuses as far as curriculum goes? And also, a basic question, what is the difference between UIC and the University of Illinois? I know this is a dumb question but its confusing to me... I will be in Champaign mixed in with undergrads but do I go to UIC or U of I?

The University of Illinois (champagne campus) was the first university. But as the population grew and Chicago became an even bigger city, they needed more campuses. UIC (University of Illinois-Chicago) was built in the 60's. The campuses at Peoria and Rockford were also added on.
So to answer your question, they're all part of the University of Illinois system, but UIC and UofI are the places that have undergrads. UIC prides itself on diversity and reaching out the city, and UofI is just your standard prestigious university (harder to get in as an undergrad).

Thus, the medical school itself is also associated with the overall UofI...the site is called University of Illinois - College of Medicine. People tend to associate it with UIC because majority of the med. students are on UIC's west campus where the University of Illinois medical center is.

As for where to go to medical school, it really depends on what you like. It's just for the first two years. If you're social, go to champagne. But otherwise, the curriculum is the same. I've been to the Peoria and Rockford campuses..and they're just your average small town. Although, I did hear from the student giving the tour at Peoria that their board scores tend to be better...don't know how accurate/scientific that info. is.
I'd go with Rockford for my case because it's a little closer to the city/my parents...if only they let me in; haha

Hope this helps

You'll be at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, also known as UIUC 🙂 UIC = University of Illinois at Chicago.

The University of Illinois has 4 separate locations for medical school. ~175-200 / 300 total students spend all 4 years at the Chicago "campus". [Chicago students rotate thru a variety of area hospitals including Cook County, the VA, UIH, and a lot of smaller ones.]

Urbana/Peoria/Rockford (U/P/R) students (~125) all spend their first year at Urbana.
For years 2-4:
~25 students stay in Urbana (mostly MD/PhD students)
~50 students go to Peoria
~50 students go to Rockford
Also note that U/P/R students can do a lot of their 4th year rotations in UIC-affiliated Chicago hospitals.

The curriculum is nationally approved in all the campuses will cover basically the same material, but the class order, professors, and emphasis may be a little different (e.g. a particular professor is doing research on X, so you'll get an extra lecture on that). All the big subjects are the same, but you're obviously going to use different methods to teach to 200 students than 25.

Also, board scores are surprisingly consistent across campuses. It's really a matter of "which campus is better FOR ME" rather than "which campus is better".

Looks like no decisions were given today. Why UIC? Why? Making me nervous all day like that. 👎

Any other MSTP interviewers heading to Chicago Sunday? 🙂

They do not forget about applicants. It is just a tedious process for some people. Well anyways UHP is the Urban Health Program which can be found on the UIC website. I would consider looking them up and reading about them before giving them a call.

ahhh....I didn't realize what that meant...I don't qualify for it. I thought you meant some branch of admissions. Thanks and Goodluck!

TickTock spelt it out pretty good.

As far as the differences between Urbana, Rockford, and Peoria, you should base your decision on learning style and location.

Everyone does M1 in Urbana, so the main difference is the M2 lectures and the M3 and M4 clinical experience. You will be on a campus with undergrads, in a building that is shared with undergrads, but your classes will be medical students only. You definitely feel more part of the UIUC campus than you feel part of UIC (even though that's technically who does your registration, financial aid, etc.)

Urbana is at the U of I main campus. You will do your M1 year there, so you will get a general feel for the city no matter where you wind up doing M2-M4. Champaign-Urbana is definitely a place that caters to the younger crowd moreso than the other two cities. It's great if you want to have fun. Unfortunately you won't have much time for that, especially during your M2 and M3 year. As far as the M2 year, Urbana notoriously has the fewest lecture hours, usually starting at 8am and finishing around 11am or noon. If you are an independent learner, this will be most useful for you.

Rockford is a medium-sized city an hour's drive from the western suburbs of Chicago. They also have a more relaxed approach to the M2 lectures, and they have one half-day per week devoted to clinical experience during M2 year, which is a unique aspect about their campus. You can expect to spend 8am-noon or 1pm in lecture on an average day in Rockford. They also allow their M4 students to do as many away rotations as they want.

Peoria is a medium-sized city in the west central Illinois valley that is 3 hours from both Chicago and St. Louis. Peoria takes a much more aggressive approach to the M2 year, and students can expect to spend 8am-3pm in lecture on a given day, and sometimes it can be as late as 5pm. This approach is good if you want more communication with lecturers. While Peoria curriculum does cover some information that is not on the USMLE Step 1 exam, the extra hours spent in lecture is mostly repeating content. For instance, you may have a lecture on Crohn's disease from a pathologist and then subsequently a lecture on Crohn's disease from a gastroenterologist. Obviously you'll get a very different perspective from those two doctors. Peoria M4 students are required to spend 16 of their 36 weeks in Peoria and the other 20 can be away rotations. From what I've seen, however, Peoria has the best hospitals (including a brand new Children's hospital)..

In my honest opinion, in retrospect, if I had to do it again, I would have stayed in Urbana-Champaign. M2 year in Peoria was very stressful and it was very difficult to stay caught up. I felt like we were required to learn a lot of information that was neither useful for Step 1 or the clinical years (or at least that would be remembered that long). I would have appreciated the shorter hours and more time to really solidify the fundamentals on my own, rather than learning about how to read a echocardiogram (there's plenty of time to do that M3-M4 years). I don't feel my colleagues in Rockford or Urbana are any less prepared because they had fewer lecture hours. Champaign is a much more modernized city than Rockford and Peoria, and there is much more to do there.

Anyway, that's my two cents..

Thanks for both of your replies. How did you feel your social life and free time in general were while during your first year in urbana?

Seriously, I must've checked my status at least 20 times lol. Can't fathom waiting another month for a decision !

Thanks! Best of luck to you as well.

Checked my status this morning for kicks.... annnddd.. no change.

My status just changed today. Got the "final decision has been made, correspondence within 2 weeks" note, and the additional correspondence tab up top. Not gonna celebrate till I see a letter in the mail.

Did you check your status yesterday? Just trying to determine if the meeting was yesterday or today.

Solid. When was your interview?

I checked this morning at around 9:30am. Perhaps the adcom meeting was yesterday with the update today? I checked last night too, probably around 9-9:30.

And I interviewed February 4th at the Peoria school.

Just checked mine too, and I got the same message. I did check all day yesterday and about 9-ish this morning and it was still "decision pending," so it probably just changed in the last hr or 2.

Also, I interviewed 1/14 at Chicago.
