Haha...they have a twitter:

http://twitter.com/UMichMedAdmiss

Apparently, they've already received 800 applications as of today.
Yeah, and based off last year's thread, Michigan's adcom almost definitely checks in on SDN every now and then. When multiple people post here asking the same question or with the same concern (when decisions will be posted, when waitlisted people will hear back, scholarship notification dates, etc), Michigan's twitter often magically seems to post a response to it in the next few days.

Just a heads up!

Yikes... reading this thread is far too stressful! Impressive stats folks... and 800 applications already?! Back to finishing the secondary for me!

Did anyone pay their fee on Friday and still not have it marked on their secondary status page?? Mine still says that I haven't paid but my bank statement begs to differ...

give it a little bit (end of the week). it should show up eventually. things aren't always that fast, though i understand where you're coming from

I submitted the secondary on Friday and JUST got the payment thing checked off. So mcctwist1, probably give it another day or two.

I have two questions though:

- All of my stuff are in (secondary, payment, all 4 letters). However, my status is still "AMCAS application received." Does that mean I'm not "complete" yet, as in they have everything but have not put it all together to review?

- Is the number for applications received, as indicated on their website, just AMCAS applications? Or only people who are complete?

Thanks!

Tippyboat- I think the # of apps received is just AMCAS apps, not completed ones.

Man they really love these diversity essays. Had to write a similar one for the undergrad program. IMO one of the toughest topics.

BTW I'm so envious of you automatic invites! Congratulations!!!! I was just one measly MCAT point away. /sigh

Just wanted to say good luck to everyone!!! UMich's med school is really fantastic, I love the way their classes and exams are set up.

Just submitted my secondary...hopefully it was good enough to merit an interview :xf:

Whew. I didn't know about Michigan's online status system until very recently. For some reason the admissions emails from them had all been sent to my spam folder, which did not happen with emails from any other school (I use gmail). I became suspicious when I checked 2010-2011 thread and saw their secondary was already available. Luckily, I was offered one of the auto-interviews and have now scheduled my interview date.

Moral of the story: Remember to check your spam folders

For the following prompt:
Tell us something you are passionate about and why.

Do you guys think it would be bad to talk about research even if you do not plan on doing MD/PhD? ... As much as I love doing research I can not bare being in school for that long!

I don't think it really matters all that much what you talk about. The only possible downside is that you might be asked why medicine instead of a Ph.D.

Do you think we should talk about something science/academic or basically any of our interests(music/travel/reading/sports/ etc..)

I really think you could talk about ANYTHING here--academic or non-academic.

Does anyone who submitted over a week ago still have "AMCAS Application received" as the status? All my little check-marks are there. Does it change to Complete?

This is a minor question, but there appears to be no drop-down options for "cell phone carrier" on the secondary. Is anyone else having this issue, did you just leave it blank?

Is Michigan the only school that gives auto-invites for interviews? Do you still have to fill out their secondary application if they give you an auto-interview?

Yes, you still have to fill out the secondary. The secondary app and letters of rec are passed on to your interviewers (who can then ask you questions about stuff you've written there) and are also used when deciding whether or not to accept you

My status changed to on hold 🙁

Well, it says "review complete" and that they can't offer me an interview at this time. Somebody from last year's forum said this just means that they reviewed your file and have not started sending out non-automatic interviews (which looks to be the case from this thread).

But to me it sounds like a slow rejection hold. Anybody know what this means? Does this mean I still have an equal shot when they do start sending out interviews?

tippy--from their twitter, it sounds like they're reviewing and sending nonautomatic interviews. not sure, but it sounds like they reviewed your file and are waiting to get more apps before making a decision. i dont think its in any way a rejection, but you mightve missed the first pass of non-automatic interviews 🙁

How often do your guys' applicant statuses get updated? Mine's been "AMCAS Application Received" since Monday, even though I've already submitted my secondary since then.

Darn 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁
Is it time to send a letter of interest? 😀

My application has been "File Complete - Under Review" since July 7.

Does anyone know how long it takes to go from UMich to the airport? If the interview day ends around 2-2:30, would it be cutting it too close to take a 4:30 PM flight?

Thanks to anyone who knows about the area!

Depending on traffic it could take around 30-45 minutes to get there, usually takes me about half an hour from A2. I think that's cutting it a litttttle close because you never know how long the security line is going to be 🙁 but it's up to you 🙂

Was anyone else's text for their secondary essays squished into one big block of text when certified?

Just curious since I had pasted it from Google Docs and wasn't sure if it contributed to the loss of formating or if that is just how Michigan's site does it.

Thanks a lot for your help, I guess I'll take a later flight just in case. It would suck to feel rushed during the day.

Also, my text was a big block as well when it was certified. I think that's just the way it ends up, I wouldn't worry about it.

I was told 3.8+ with 38+ for OOS. Looks like you might've missed by 1 point?

On the other hand... 3.95+39 didn't net me one, so don't feel bad! We'll get an interview, next round hopefully 😀

Wow--no way! I wonder if they take school into account then...(not that i know where you're going)

Same thing happened to me. Don't worry, the way you had it originally formatted is the way the adcom will see it.

I was lucky enough to just get an interview here. Does anyone have tips for the best way to get to campus? I know there are a few hotels and shuttle options listed on the Michigan interview page, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions from personal experience. I am contemplating flying in to Detroit or taking train/bus from Chicago.

Also, has anyone been able to schedule a student host yet?

I've never been to Michigan before so I am happily seeking any advice via this forum or PM. Thanks.

I'd just fly into DTW, I wouldn't take a train/bus from Chicago, it's longer than it sounds lol. I dunno what hotels they suggest on the interview page, but there are a few that are basically on campus so you wouldn't have to rent a car, although depending on the hotel and the date they will probably be a little more expensive than the hotels that are further out of A2. If you're under 25 it might be worth it to just stay on campus and avoid the "under 25" fees for car rental lol. Off the top of my head there is:

The Bell Tower - http://www.belltowerhotel.com/ (little pricey but great location and very nice 🙂 )
The League Inn - http://uunions.umich.edu/league/inn/ (right on campus basically, The League is a UMich building. you could call to see if they have discounts since you are interviewing there)
Campus Inn - http://www.campusinn.com/ (once again on the pricey side, but good location)

If it were me and I was out-of-state, I'd fly into DTW, get a cab to and from the airport, and stay on campus at the League. This is all assuming that they are holding the interviews at their main med school building at 1301 Catherine, so any of these three hotels are within walking distance from there (check out Mapquest or Google Maps).

My invite for an interview was sent to my spam folder. I know that for secondaries they usually say turn them in within 2 weeks, but since I got an invite, does it matter when I send my secondary (so long as it is 2 weeks before my interview date)? Will the committee think that I don't care about their university? (I actually really want to go there, since both my parents went to the University).

Thanks in advance.

If you take the bus, or train, there's a station stop in ann arbor area. You can probably arrange to have somebody pick you up like the hotel shuttle or take a cab, which can be cheaper since it's only a closer distance.

I've heard that it doesnt matter, since youve got the invite, but i'm in the same boat, and I'm gonna go ahead and submit it soon. it's not worth risking, and its not a terrible secondary anyway. id go ahead and just submit it, unless you have a millon other things to do

"We are reading files and offering interviews. If we don't offer you interview now you will be reviewed again (and again) until Feb."

Any news from anyone?!

hey guys,

i submitted my secondary today and i noticed that my essays didnt keep my paragraph breaks there. i dont really mind since it was a really short essay but i thought it improved the flow with the breaks. did this happen to anyone else? i just want to know incase it was a mistake, so i can call someone. thanks.

It happens to everyone. Don't worry, the way you had it formatted before you submitted it will be the way that the adcom sees it.

just got an interview offer today! (non-automatic) my secondary was submitted a few days ago...
