2 years ago when my friend interviewed for the entering class of 2009 at USF, he was told during his interview day that he would receive in state tuition after attending one year as an OOS student. Anyone know if this is still true?

I think it was true then, but as of last year or the year before the state passed a law that makes this next to impossible to pull off. Though from what I found interviewing last year, most states have a similar policy and thus if you are OOS almost anywhere you should be prepared for OOS tuition all four years.

I know it is a lot a money but you can make the tuition work no matter what your situation, and if you go the loan route there are plenty of pretty good repayment programs out there that lighten the load. PM me if you haven't heard of some of the options and I'd be happy to discuss what I have learned.

Got the call today. Accepted!!! 😀😀😀😀🙂😀😀😀 Interviewed 12/14, IS.

On my interview day they specifically told us this was no longer true. A law or regulation was changed in Florida in like 2009 to make switching to in-state afte a year no longer an option. Indeed, when this law passed, it put USF in a tough position as they had "sold" some applicants on the idea that they could switch to in-state tuition after one year. The person said, in this instance, that the school personally refunded the difference in tuition because they felt obligated to those students whom they had told it would be easy to establish in-state residency.

Out of curiousity what is it that out of staters pay for USF? I know there were a few out of staters at UCF interview that I had and they said about 50k was the cost.

That's not that bad when you compare to UIC out of state tuition in chicago (70k) or Wayne State OOS tuition and everything (80k).

So if it is around 50k, I think that's not too different then a lot of other schools that are privates.

I do, however, think in the choice of OOS for a Fl. school and IS for your own state school I'd not risk the financial debt. But you should see if they offer any scholarships or anything for OOSers to reduce the financial burden.

At UCF they decided the OOSers would be offered 15k a year while the ISers 5k a year so that they can reduce the burden for OOSers. Then a few exceptional people would get 25k a year. But you could see if they have some money to offer OOSers here.

And yes REL told me when I as at the UCF interview that state wide law has passed taking away the IS tuition after 1st year law. Now it is like it is at UIC and Wayne State where all 4 years are OOS status if you weren't a Fl. resident at the time. this is the reason I didn't sacrifice my Fl. residency when in Boston last year.

OOS is just under 55K this year and IS is about 30K. To your point, this is a huge difference if you do have IS options, yet if you are going OOS than like you said it is competitive compared to many of the US Med schools. Also, I am personally of the belief that you should pick the school that you feel most comfortable at, and shouldn't let the price tag sway you if the fit is right. Like I said above, there are many great state and federal programs to help you get the loans you'll need and then pay them off efficiently.

Can anyone shed more light on the how the interviews are set up? There is only a little bit posted so far

Do they begin with a "Tell me about yourself" and make it more of a conversation or are there certain questions they have to get through during the interview? (covering leadership, service, etc?)

Also, I've been researching and hearing different things, are they completely open file or partially open (where they know your activities but not your GPA or MCAT?) I've looked to Interview Feedback but wanted to get a clear answer from past interviewees

Please post any information you think would help -- I still don't have an acceptance anywhere and would like to rock this interview!

does anyone know how long USF interviews for? Some schools are winding down and others are about half way done, I just want to get an idea if I should still hope for an interview or come to terms with reality. Thanks and congrats to everyone who got in!

I believe they interview into april as well, but how many weeks in i'm not sure.

FAQ for Interviews:

1. They are open file.
2. You have 2 30-45 min interviews with either faculty members or faculty and a 4th year medical student. All the students are also on the admissions committee.
3. The style of the interview depends entirely on that person. There are some standard things that they tend to cover, but how they do it is up to them. Your tour guide will usually give you some info on your specific interviewers.
4. You will receive a bio sheet in the morning for both your interviewers (so you do have a chance to Google them before your interview). Again, the tour guides are usually really good about giving you a heads up about any quirks.
5. USF prides itself on having a fantastic interview day and having interviewers who are very well trained and conversational.

Let me know if I missed anything.

I thought they interview til April or something. Definitely at least March but from what I think I read somewhere April is when interviews end.

Canhasnaps,

if you are around please confirm.

Usually interviews last until the end of March with a few flex weeks in April if the committee has people they really want to see in person.

I spoke to someone in the Office of Admissions...they interview into April.

Ahh I see. That's what I thought they meant by april, i.e. that it meant end of March. So that at beginning of april it was all over. What you are saying makes sense.

🙂

Now if USF could show me some love. :meanie:

thanks for the help, i've been waiting for some USF love for a while haha

Has anyone out there been offered an interview since things resumed in January? Anxiously awaiting! Thanks.

Interview invite today, OOS, no idea when complete but within days of when it was available.

Is anyone still waiting to hear from their interview in October? I interviewed October 19 and have not heard anything. I am beginning to think I missed my letter in the mail. Does anything update online for those of you who have heard from USF?

I interviewed on 10/26 and my acceptance letter was dated 12/15. I checked my online application and there is no change or anything that says "accepted." I would call them because I thought every fall interview was supposed to hear back something before Christmas. I could be wrong, but that's what I would do. GL!

Stats are not everything to USF. And they look for something very particular in their students. They truly do a holistic review and want people who will make a great addition to their "family." I loved it here. Hoping for good news!

Don't lose hope - they interview until April.

Anyone have recommendations for hotels nearby?

Awesome. Interview invite today. Applied in July, I thought I was "complete" then, but didn't have that unreasonable fifth letter of rec, until January 5th when I got an email saying I was complete with four letters (no committee, all individuals).

Guess I'm going to Tampa. It's a heck of a lot nicer there than here in the northeast.

Thanks mcapmed! I just got off the phone with them and my letter DID get lost in the mail. It went out Nov 4th. That is kind of soon after my interview. I can't decide if that is good or bad.... They wouldn't tell me over the phone so I still have to wait a couple of days for a new letter. Bummer.

Anyone know of the odds of an OOS applicant getting accepted? I assume there are more acceptances given out than actually accepted bc of the high out of state tuition? lol

Last year they took 12 or so OOS out of 120 in the class. A few had said they got in off the wait list so I am guessing there were 16-20 total OOS acceptances. Not great odds but diversity of experience among the class members seems to be the growing trend around here. If you bring something out of the ordinary to the table, they should give you some serious consideration.

Hey, I'm curious about your wording. Does this mean that even though the status page says I'm complete I may not be? God forbid I call them and ask lol.

Anyone might have an idea what percent of this years class has been filled at USF so far?😕😕

I just got the waitlist letter a few days ago, and the tone did not seem promising. Has anyone received an optimistic letter? Also curious about what percent of the class has been filled?

hopingformd, I would call them to check. My friend's status said complete for 3 months before the emailed him saying they were missing something from his app (lost in the mail apparently...). Anyways, I would DEFINITELY call them if you are unsure about something. Hopefully you catch Adrienne on a good day, I know I didn't lol.

lol! I didnt cath Adrienne on a good day either. The school seems to dislike application updates and call-ins.

If u read this thread at all you'd have known not to do that.

They don't take pre interview updates and they've stated it themselves. They don't make status updates and it has been stated on here that they take note of how u act on the phone so its not worth the risk.

So yeah sorry to say but I'm not surprised.

When the school has mistakenly given people wrong information about the status of their application online, I would expect a little more respect than I personally received (and have heard others received) at the hands of USF's admissions personnel. If their goal is to turnoff good applicants, they have done a decent job so far in my personal opinion. USF was very near the top of my list for schools until the interview and subsequent dealings with their admissions personnel. They should keep in mind us applicants also take note of how THEY act on the phone.

Oh dang, I'm sorry they were rude to you when you called. That's weird because Ms. Kinsella seemed super nice and helpful when she called me for the interview and I was that much more excited about USF Med. It was probably just a busy day for them or something. Don't take it too much to heart.

Well they are nice when they are calling u for interview but when people call for wanting to send in updates and for status checks they are rude because they don't want u to do either.

I'm not sure if Butler was asking for status check in the sense of making sure everything was in i.e. that all letters were in etc. or for an update on whether his app has been reviewed. If it is the former situation then that's sad that they were so rude. if it was the latter situation then I'm not quite honestly shocked.

It was not one of those scenarios. Regardless, even if it were the ladder option, I personally do not think it gives them the right to be rude. How a medical school treats applicants that are not immediately accepted is WAY more telling than how they treat applicants that are interviewing or have been accepted. I am confused that you think it is OK for admissions personnel to be rude to applicants Guju. I personally give everyone I meet respect until they lose it and I hope for the same treatment from others.

Butler, I completely agree. They are paid to review these applications and find candidates who benefit from the programs they offer and will simutaneously create a great learning environment. So it would behoove them to treat all candidates as if they matter.

I'm in!!! Looking back, that secondary was well worth it. I was pleasantly surprised with USF. I have lots of thinking to do now.

Congrats DocTraveler!! It seems like you have acceptances at a majority of the FL schools. Just curious, which one did you like best? You can PM if you like 🙂

i also received a congratulations call from Dr. Brooks today.

ACCEPTED!!

USF has an excellent program

Anybody know anything about second visits?

My thoughts exactly!! I was thinking that just the other day. It seems we interviewed together at FIU? Maybe I'll recognize you this time. I'm so excited to finally interview at USF! I've heard good things from my friend who is an MS1 there. 🙂

On a side note-- We weren't tracking your progress DocTraveler.. I just noticed that you posted on all the threads for florida schools that I applied to and that it seemed you got accepted everywhere. It's kind of hard to notice since I check the threads somewhat frequently. Sorry if it came off as stalkerish 😛

I didn't mean it that way at all. I don't care if anyone is stalkerish, I'd just rather PM people about it b/c of what I said previously. No hate I promise. I couldn't PM you last night from my cell so I will right now purplesky.

And I also agree with you. We are very very lucky to have so many state school options compared to some states that have one or none.

CONGRATULATIONS MDeadmau5!
Do you know if all calls were made yesterday for those that were accepted? I also interviewed on your day and did not receive a call, so now I am worried that its going to be bad news 🙁

Anyone interviewing here I would recommend priceline "name your own price" for tampa north and busch garden areas....... just booked the courtyard marriott for $50.....price through their website is $109!!!

Anyways, thought i would share my good fortune....

Huh was organicchem2 responding in response to your reply to me?? I don't even see a post by this poster anywhere. I'm confused. did I miss something?? If I instigated something as an attack on you by a poster then I'm sorry. Like I said, i was not trying to expose your anonymity or whatever. Not stalking you but like I said, you posted on a lot of threads I'm on because we applied to many of the same schools even the out of state schools. the ones I saw you post on seemed to have had deferred or waitlisted status so I assumed this was a first acceptance. I wasn't asking where else you were accepted. Just curious if this was your first acceptance because it seemed like you were waitlisted/deferred everywhere else I saw you post or yet still interviewing and was going to say if this is your first acceptance especially that would make it even all the sweeter. you do not need to get so upset because I was just noting an observation based on your own posts in the threads that we've both been posting in. it was not meant to mean any harm. Sorry you took it the wrong way. SDN truly equals the place where people find a reason to start drama for no reason at all sometimes.

Like I said before, I meant no hate towards anyone. I was just very annoyed by organicchem's post (which I might add was somehow deleted entirely). Guju I know you were just making an observation, but like you've said yourself and others have noted, some admissions staff lurk these threads and I'd like some anonymity. I will share whatever through PMs I just hate my statuses being displayed by someone else for EVERYONE to read, no matter how many schools we may be both applying to. I'm sure no one would like this very much. No hate though, just trying to point out the obvious.
