This is not the case. It isn't cooked up.

Not only do good (read: accepted) applicants interview later in the season as well as early on, but there is a lot of merit to what someone said previously about interviewing some great students later so they consider UTMB strongly. It's called the recency effect.

Additionally, interviewing at your favorite school after interviewing other places makes you more experienced (read: more likely to rock the interview). That being said, sometimes your first interview can go really well because you're still super excited and not, shall I say, "bored" of the repetativeness of multiple, nearly identical interviews? 🙄

Try to stay fresh and excited throughout the interview season... I was SO excited at UTMB, and it showed.

I interviewed there in November and was accepted. November is late in the game. Many of my classmates also interviewed in December. They got in too.

Good luck! :luck:

I'm still going to go ahead and believe this is true no matter what anyone says!!! This is one of the few schools i haven't heard from and I have no idea why other schools would want an interview from me and UTMB wouldn't! I really hope I still do get an interview...and if thinking they are saving me for a little later makes me feel better, whether true or not, than who cares!!! 🙂

Yeah, SDN is not the arbiter of all truth, so don't stress when people are being discouraging. Some people are just like that. I definitely think they stagger the good applicants 👍

Thats very encouraging DrHiner ...Thanks! I would like to think they are waiting to send me the invite in view of the "recency" effect... Its funny I just studied this effect yesterday trying to complete a PSYC assignment🙂

Hey guys so I started a facebook group for our class. Its a work in progress 😉

Lets hope that link works....

If not search for Utmb class of 2015

Hope to be able to join come Nov 15th. Had my interview last week. The school is definitely my top choice along with UTHSCSA. It would be amazing to study medicine on the beach for the next 4 years. Plus, rotating through Brac in Austin, I'd get to work with my mom and sister!

Hi All.

For those who have received interview invites, would you mind sharing your stats? Thank you and good luck!

30 / cGPA 3.52 / sGPA 3.91
Lots of volunteering, 4.00 Post Bacc

Good luck to you also.

You can still join. Its just easier to talk on there and get advice ( at least in my mind). Best of luck by the way. I hope you get in.

UTMB is my #1 choice... The student body is awesome and you are sorta at a beach... Anyway who has recently gotten an interview invite? I submitted TMDSAS 9/1 - didn't transfer to schools until 9/28... Any idea when I may hear?

Also, my chances?
My stats are 32 MCAT... Went to a top 25 undergrad w/ GPA 3.1 & sGPA 3.4... Been in graduate school for two years studying biomedicine w/ 3.7 GPA...

Thanks.

I got my interview for oct 29th last week! Anyone else going?

Hey all you awesome interviewees! Nice stats everyone 🙂 Just wanted to pass along a warning that I got in the daily UTMB email newsletter... Evidently, they're cracking down on speeding right near the school, and it would be horrible if one of you guys got a ticket when you're already nervous because it's interview day. So here's the scoop!

Speeders beware on 14th street
The Galveston Police Department's East Isle Communities in conjunction with UTMB P.D. and GISD P.D. will be conducting a traffic initiative with the objective of encouraging safe driving in the areas of 14th Street between Strand and Avennue J. This initiative is being conducted in response to complaints about speeders in the area. The traffic enforcement initiative will be conducted during the morning hours but will include monitoring during various times during the day.

Fines for speeding range from $144.00 for 1 to 5 miles over to $297.00 for 25 miles over the speed limit not to exceed $500.

Fines for speeding in a School zone range from $197.00 for 1 to 5 miles over to $322.00 for 20+ miles over the speed limit not to exceed $500.

Anyway, good luck on your interviews! Feel free to ask any students you see wandering around for help or directions... we truly love seeing you all interviewing and can't wait to have 200+ of y'all as classmates in less than a year!! 😀

Hey there,

Your stats look good. While I would initially worry about the lower undergrad GPA, the upward trend of having a competitively high grad GPA should extinguish most worries. UTMB is pretty forgiving about things, especially when improvement is shown. And, probably even more if you went to a competitive undergrad as you stated.

That being said, it is more than GPA/MCAT, so how the rest of your app looks (volunteering, research, work, ECs, etc) will obviously play a factor too. Hopefully the late submission won't be too much of a problem for you. It really wasn't that much of a problem for me... I still had 3 interviews all crammed into the last half of november and the beginning of december last year.

Can't say when you'll hear though... that part is the hardest to predict lol
:luck::luck:

Texas schools are so random...I applied to 7 and UTMB is the only one I haven't heard from! BLAH BLAH BLAH Come on UTMB!!

Well all it takes is one! That's what I'm banking on! 🙂

But yeah. I've been complete FOREVER. But no news from most of the TX schools. I still hope that maybe I'll get one more invite (a late one) but at this point... it's a definite longshot.

Good luck to you!!! 👍 🙂

EDIT: I misread your post. You've heard from ALL schools, except for UTMB?!?!?! WOW, you're in a good spot!!! 🙂

ARGH!!! so i was actually transmitted back in the end of June. My MCAT score was pretty bad though so I retook it at the end of July. Scores were sent to TMDSAS on September 1. I called UTMB last week to see if they had my new scores, and they didn't. So I had to follow up and they loaded my new scores this week. So far in Texas, I've interviewed at Texas Tech El Paso and TCOM. Does anyone know whether UTMB (and the other TX schools) will reevaluate your application after you apply early but retake the MCAT late? I know they've probably gone through my application the first time and maybe rejected it initially bc of the low scores. I'm hoping for a couple more texas interviews, and one at UTMB would just be awesome... :xf:

Anyone know how the MD/PhD program is at Galveston? How are the PIs, facilities, research, etc? Any current MD/PhD students care to weigh in?

I'm not a student there (yet, hopefully :xf:) but UTMB is a great school for PhD. They pump out a lot of research and even have a BSL-4 lab.

Anybody have UTMB show up on their match list yet?

How do you access the match list? I got on to my application but there doesn't seem to be a button anywhere to go to the list. If I get on the status page and click on "school preference list" it takes me back to the home page.

Maybe the schools haven't listed me as having interviewed yet? I've had several interviews though so I thought I would have been on there by now. They were all over the last few weeks though.

Humm..

have an OOS who applied to MD/PhD heard back yet? I literally applied on the first day and havent heard anything yet

I haven't seen many interview offers recently from UTMB, are they just behind or are they slowing down their interview season?

I was wondering about this too. I don't know what's going on, but come on.... me next! 😀

yeah I have noticed the fewer amount of interviews offered as well. probably has something to do with the surplus of acceptances last year which takes 20 spots from 2015 class (i mean you usually interview 5 people for every spot in the class, so this takes about 100 interviews away from this cycle). also, you have to remember that not every person in the world is on SDN, so maybe those people have been getting the interviews. oh well....good luck everyone!!

ACCEPTED!!! MY TOP CHOICE IN TX out of the places I've interviewed here so far! I'm soooo excited. OOS obviously. Proof that numbers aren't everything. YAY!!! 😀😀😀😀😀

Congratulations! Was it by email? I'm an OOS interviewee from a few weeks ago, so I'm hoping for some good news too!

Hi All.

For those who have received interview invites, would you mind sharing your stats? Thank you and good luck!

Was Transmitted: 10/4

Interview Invite: 10/12

Interview Date: 10/29

Stats: 33Q; cGPA 3.77; sGPA 3.69

Hope you get one as well! 🙂

So with 23 OOS positions available, and 20 spots taken from their screw up last year, we are left with 187 spots MAX for IS at UTMB....crazy stuff, smh.

Thanks! Yes, I got the email earlier today. I interviewed back on the second interview date in August. Not sure of the exact date but everything's on my MDApps. If you have any other questions, just let me know! :luck: with everything! I'm definitely starting to feel better about the whole OOS thing with Texas schools. It's not totally impossible!

Congrats on all of your acceptances!!! 🙂

Hi All.

For those who have received interview invites, would you mind sharing your stats? Thank you and good luck!

Stats:
sGPA: 3.70
non-science GPA: 3.79
cumulative GPA: 3.73

MCAT: 12bio 13physics 13VR writing S

submitted 8/23/10
interview invite 8/26/10
interview 11/5/10

I had UTMB show up on my match list, but I never interviewed there nor have I received an invite. Has anyone else had something similar happen?

I called the admissions office and they said that they were going to check on it and get back to me, because my file "looks strange" and has some statuses that they only use internally. I'm hoping it means that they're wanting to invite me for an interview. It would be disappointing for it to just be a strange computer error. :-/

For OOS applicants at UTMB, how important is it to have a tie to Texas?

Got the Interview Invite E-mail today! I'll be there on 11/12 and will be there at the gathering the night before. Woo! 👍

Hi. Anyone know what the MCAT/GPA stats are for UTMB?

From what I have seen, the average stats of matriculants (key word: matriculants, not interviewees or accepted persons) is close to most of the other Texas med schools (excluding BCM and Southwestern). This would make the average MCAT 30-31 and ~3.7/3.7 GPA. Hope this helps! 🙂

Hey for all who have had their interview, How was it? Mine is this Friday and I'm nervous!

Thanks!

DON'T GET NERVOUS!!
I talked to a lot of people after the interview and I have not come across a single person who said they had a bad interview. They are really just trying to get to know you. Just be yourself and MAKE SURE YOU KNOW YOUR APPLICATION

My two interviews were conversational, nothing out of ordinary. one asked me why medicine? and the rest of the interview we just talked about random stuff. The other interviewer basically went down application and asked me questions from there.

Nothing to be nervous about, I promise!
be yourself and good luck!

I got the under review email in early July...

Me too! And having received interviews at 5 other texas schools with similar stats makes me wonder what the difference is! Does anyone have any feedback?

Congrats to all the OOS people who got in! Med school on an island doesn't seem so bad!

Interview day at UTMB was awesome! Just wear comfortable shoes (trust me on this...running around their huge campus in heels while trying to make it on time to your interview is simply not a good idea

I had one toughie of a question come up: So we interview 930 people for 230 spots, why should you be one of those 230?

:luck: to everyone!

There is a certain amount of randomness to it all. One of my friends got waitlisted at WashU, pre-matched into UTSW, and did not get an interview at either UTMB or BCM. Who the hell knows why? If you already have 5 interviews, you will get in somewhere awesome. I've met so many medical students who think that their particular medical school is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I'm telling you what I keep trying to get myself to believe...where you end up is where you are meant to be

that being said, sending well wishes your way! :luck:

Thanks! Don't get me wrong, I am very thankful and blessed to have had interviews so far, but I just think UTMB would be a great option also. I definitely don't want to come off to people as the guy who isn't satisfied with what he's got. To those of you out there without an interview, I hope you get one here before I do! 🙂

Ursa,

I recieved my "application complete" email from UTMB in late july (like july 24th or something). We have almost identical stats (you have a slightly higher GPA, I have a slightly higher MCAT) and I have heard from the exact same schools as you. This wait is really frustrating!!!! 😡

Here's to hoping we hear soon!

I transmitted 9/30. I never received an "under review" email. My stats are 3.89 GPA and a 31Q MCAT. I've only had one interview with UTSW lol. Any thoughts? Are any of these other TX schools going to email me?!

9/30 is really late, thats my only thought. Otherwise, you seem to be a great applicant. UTMB was really awesome btw, good luck. Hopefully you get one of the golden tickets.. :xf:
