Hey ButImleTired,

Thanks a lot for your encouraging words and info. All the best!

Also, are there no available student hosting program? 🙁 I'm so broke.

Hey guys,

orientation is underway here so I don't know how free the admission office is, but I'll cross my fingers with you that you hear something soon!

As for "fit", Cole said it pretty well. It's sort of frustrating because you don't know how to "make yourself" into what we're looking for, but there really isn't a clear number of traits that everyone shares, except that we're all really pretty friendly and outgoing. Shy, super-studious science nerds are really in the minority, which I have found to be really unlike most other med schools. Everyone in my class is really easy to talk to and just a little quirky. Social events are super popular. There is a huge focus on "wellness", both physical (I don't think there is even one member of my class who doesn't work out regularly or semi-regularly) and I guess spiritual. They try like hell to make sure we're happy, healthy, and working at our fullest potential.

So I think the best way to emphasize that you'd fit in here is to be as chill as possible on your interview. Obviously be a professional- they're really strict when it comes to professionalism- but being open, sunny and smiling will take you a lot farther than sitting there stiff as a board and muttering something about your research and how much you love science. They like really passionate people- although we're each passionate about something different- so that's another thing you want to emphasize. If cooking, or knitting, or surfing just gets you super excited and you could talk for hours about it, mention it in your application and in your interview. Be memorable for your uniqueness, there's nothing memorable about perfect grades and scores. A little spice goes a long way.

Of course there are more subdued members in my class but even they're incredibly sweet and nice once you talk to them and they have their own "quirks", I guess. So I think that's what "fits" here. If you don't fit that's perfectly fine- there are tons of other schools that work if you're more of a subdued, studious academic (wash u comes to mind) who just prefers to be left alone to study instead of getting uber-involved. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it probably wouldn't work here as well as it does elsewhere. So you might not get in here if you're like that.

In general, I really think you have to view rejections as a good thing. It's the admissions office's way of telling you that you wouldn't be happy there cause you don't fit exactly right. They know more about how to make up a class than you do, so trust their judgment. I know it stinks to be rejected- I certainly received my share- but don't get super bogged down because it's pointless.

This is where having a gf at the undergrad helps. 🙂

There is actually a student hosting program, but I never got contacted by them and my interview's tomorrow, so I wouldn't put too much faith in it. I don't remember what the link is though.

Just received the interview invite/secondary this past Saturday.

Does anyone who recently submitted know what the earliest dates available for interview were? I know several people have already been submitting and picking dates so where are the dates at right now?

Thanks

Hey guys,

yeah, we definitely have a program. The issue is this: two people from the first year class have to be given the task of managing the hosting website and finding hosts for things. Also, only first years are hosts here (not sure why) and they have only started classes about a month ago. Moral of the story: the system isn't up yet. I think in theory they want the first years to have been here for at least a month or two before hosting so they can actually answer an interviewee's questions, and the second years generally don't have time to manage the whole hosting system so they need first years to do it. But yeah, that's why Cole didn't get an answer and why you may not be able to get a host.

It's kind of a dumb system, not sure why we do it this way...

Dude, props to your girl. My gf goes to a school just 20 minutes from me. Not too helpful. Sigh. but yeah, if anyone knows of the hosting program, please do share.

Rejected. Preinterview/secondary. 34N, 4.0. Sucks, but it may have to do with the fact that I applied last year. Oh well, the beat goes on 🙂

I got rejected also. Maybe they hate reapplicants... my application was much better this year than last year, but I was interviewed last year and not this year.

Yeah, they totally hate reapplicants. Oh well, I guess they'll just miss out on my mad guitar skills and your vocals 😛

WHAT??? I just got my invite...postmarked AUGUST 5th!!!! my school's post office lost it for a while...

That makes sense, except several of the people that interviewed with me have hosts. Maybe I'm not loved?!

By the way LET, I dropped by the MS2 lecture this morning and didn't see you there. I'm on to you... 😛

Haha ummm...I was asleep 😀

also today's lectures were boring.

hey im interviewing next tuesday 9/14/10
i have the afternoon interview

a few questions

what am i doing from 8:30 - 11:15 am? & what should i be doing?

whats for lunch?

You'll be doing nothing. The two people that had the afternoon interview yesterday didn't come until 11:00 or so. You'll want to come for the tour and lunch, but as far as I understand you don't need to be there in the morning if you have an afternoon interview.

Lunch for us was sandwiches (two choices: chicken salad and turkey) with chips, a cookie, and sodas. It was aight. Fortunately the candy bowl in the office more than makes up for it.

Good luck!

When I interviewed, there were also veggie sandwiches.

You can also go sit in on classes; they state in the interviewing booklet that it is ok for you to walk in and out of classes. Everyone is really nice and friendly. and will talk to you in the halls when they see that you have a suit on. They even come to the office to chat with you.

Edit: Good luck!!!! You'll have a good time🙂

FYI...I called Vanderbilt Admissions today. They said that they are sending out a lot of letters today. So keep an eye out!

Just stopping by to say hi! I keep seeing you guys and gals coming in for interviews, so I thought I'd wish you luck. And share my jealousy as I wait for them to either hook me up with the 2ndary or reject me.

As for the lunch noms, for most lectures and such that have been here when lunch is provided, they always have an assortment of sandwiches so omnivores and herbivores have options. (Just not always for those of us with gluten issues, but the chips are good! haha) Even the cafeteria has some things labeled with info so if you have dietary restrictions (no egg, no wheat, yes/no soy) you can have an idea of safe things to munch. They even sell protein shakes in the caf if you need a quick source of nutrition on a break. No matter what you should be covered! 🙂

Hello All,

Got a secondary/int invite last week. AMCAS completed Aug 12th, letter was postmarked Aug 30th.

I'm Canadian. I'm praying the student hosting program will be up, hopefully sometimes in Oct, cuz i'm kinda broke too.

Has anyone received any letters for interview invites this week? They sent out a fresh batch Monday morning. I submitted to Vanderbilt August 16 and got a confirmation on August 24. I don't know if my letter will be in this batch, but let me know if you submitted around the same time and get one!!

Dreaming - My email confirmation said it would take 6-8 weeks to hear from them and it would be by snail mail. I'd doubt it would be in this batch. If you submitted early Aug, I'd think it would be end of the month or early Oct that you might hear back.

You can expect to hear from us regarding your application six to eight weeks from the date of transmission of your verified AMCAS application to Vanderbilt.

I got my confirmation on August 17th and no word via snail mail yet. I am in CA, so it might take longer, but I will definitely post when I hear back.

I just called Vanderbilt. I'm still under review they said. The people there are really nice!

Congratulations! I'll be speeding home after work to check the mail! :xf:

Nothing in the mail last night 🙁 I'm leaving town for the weekend, so will have to do the loooooong wait until Monday to check again. Come on Vandy!

Hi MNBred,

We were complete around the same time, and Vandy told me yesterday that I was still under review. So I'm sure you are too. If they finish reviewing us by today, they may send out our letters this coming Monday. It may be the end of next week or later until we hear. Good luck to you though!

Thanks for the info DreamingPremed! I appreciate it. Now I can relax until next week. Good luck to you too!

So after your application is reviewed, will the AdComs send you an interview/rejection letter or is it possible you'll be on some internal hold and not hear back?

If you have been waiting an inordinate amount of time as compared to other applicants who completed about the same time as you did, I would call them or email. Just from personal experience, last year my letter got lost in the mail and so I didn't know their decision until I emailed in about February (the letter was addressed in October). I have not heard of any internal hold.

I've been waiting about a month, don't know if that is an inordinate amount of time or not. I guess I'll give them a week and then call.

Yeah, it's hard to know. Just as a frame of reference...I received the email that my application had arrived on August 17th. As of last week (about 9/17), I was still under review. Another applicant (see 50fly above) had their application received on 8/20 and got an invitation in the mail on 9/16.

Got pre-secondary/interview rejection letter tonight in the mail. AMCAS submitted 7/15, 3.97 overall GPA, 34 MCAT. Sucks, Vandy is right down the street from me. I feel like being a post-bac student without a ton of science classes and no research is gonna get me rejected from a lot of the better schools.

I'm sorry about the rejection, that really sucks. Vandy is super competitive and very hard to get into, so don't let it make you feel like a bad applicant overall. Your GPA and MCAT are awesome, and as long as you have the required science courses, I'm sure you'll do well in the application cycle. I am also a post-bac with limited sciences (i.e. I only did 2 years post-bac rather than get a ton of science classes in), and I know it can be frustrating, but hang in there! Good luck!

I was invited to complete the secondary and interview a week ago. Going through the secondary instructions I came across their AP credit requirements and they won't allow my HS physics to count.

I really liked the idea of Vandy. Oh well... at least I don't have to write the autobio.

Rejected, got the letter today. Not really surprised, 3.98/32

Just got the invite letter today! Submitted my amcas and was acknowledged at the end of August

Rejection letter today as well, submitted mid-August.

Also rejected for the secondary/invite.. 3.85 cum/3.85 sci, 35Q MCAT, D1 athlete, plenty of research, shadowing, and hospital volunteer experience. Not sure what I'm missing 🙁. This was my top choice!

When did they send you the application received email?

I got the email August 10th. Got the rejection letter today in the mail

Thanks, sorry to hear that though...Your stats are amazing, I'm sure you'll get into a great school!

I got the "we received your application" email August 31st. Rejection letter today but dated 9/15/10. Guess they were quicker on deciding that they don't want me "based on my credentials". Best of luck to everyone else!

Hey guys,

just one quick thing. I've been getting a ton of PM's lately about Vandy- how I like the school, how to prep for interviews, etc. I'm sort of overwhelmed with schoolwork at the moment, so I apologize if I don't answer very quickly. Please look at my old posts on this thread and the one last year if you have pretty general questions- chances are I've answered them already at some point. I'm not trying to be difficult, I understand the urge to just ask a question hoping for a personalized answer- I'm just uber busy at the moment and those kinds of questions often require a long, thought out response that I just don't have the time to write.

Sorry I've been MIA, good luck with your interviews, and feel free to ask questions on this thread if anything specific comes up.

INTERVIEW INVITE!!! Got it today, complete 8/17. Can't believe it...this is my dream school in my dream town. Can't wait!!
