I read that financial aid decisions will be released in May - can anyone verify this? I cannot remember what source I got that info from, but wanted to double-check on here if anyone knew any different (especially any current students).

Also (for current students), if funds are tight, do you think it would be reasonable to NOT attend 'revisit' even if we are 99% sure we plan on matriculating?

Thanks in advance!

That was easily the nicest rejection letter I've ever read. Way to stay classy Harvard.

I think a few other schools could learn a thing or two.....

Seriously? Are there no current students whom we could PM for help in making a decision?

Question for those waitlsited: Do we need to respond that we are accepting the spot via email or will we receive something in the mail for our response.

I called the office, and they said that emailing them was all they needed.

They're going to send us a packet thing in the mail, and that will have info about what we need to do to respond.

Current student here. Send me any questions you have.* We have spring break this week and I'll be happy to answer your questions. Congratulations on getting in!

Waitlist people: there's only like 20? of you on the new pathway list, it's highly likely that you will get off the list (probably highest likelihood of any school's waitlist).--hang in there.

Housing: Get your Vanderbilt Hall contracts in ASAP. Waitlistees: you may have to look into off-campus housing for next year. It can be expensive and stressful. I would recommend visiting Boston in person if you need to live off-campus.

*I may anonymize your questions and repost them to this thread so that I don't get the same question multiple times.

are there any on-campus housing options for a family of 5 (wife, 1 y/o son, two dogs)?

Where do we get the Vanderbilt Hall contracts?

Not near the med school, as far as I know. There may be housing available through the havard-owned housing in cambridge. You'll have to look into it. As far as I know, most (all) families in our class live in "off-campus" housing. The only on-campus housing is vandy, which is strictly 1 person per room.

Where do get the Vanderbilt Hall contracts?

Acceptance packets. People forgot/slacked last year and ran into problems.

How much better is the Revisit Weekend vs the ONE Harvard Weekend? I already bought a plane ticket to another school's second look, and was thinking of going to the ONE Harvard one instead. Do you think I will still get as much out of that?

Should we fill out the Vanderbilt applications even if we aren't totally sure we will live there? Or is that frowned upon?
Thanks!

I don't know what the ONE Harvard one will be like. The 375th anniversary celebration was nuts. We all got smashed and stumbled around the campus. Food everywhere. It was fun.

I also don't know what revisit is like. You will probably be given more in-depth tours, time to speak with current students, maybe some time to visit faculty who you want to do research with, and then partying at night (lots of booze if you're into that sort of thing). I didn't go last year, so don't bank on any of those things (except for the student-council provided booze).

Yes. Fill it out if you think you might want to live there.

Which weekend is the ONE Harvard weekend? I'm not sure if I can make Revisit either. . .

Am I the only newbie that doesn't know what the ONE Harvard weekend is? Is that an acronym?

It's my understanding that OneHarvard is a one day event for all of the graduate schools. It is geared toward underrepresented and minority students. It's on Saturday, March 31. My guess is that it will have much less to do with HMS and much more to do with promoting interdisciplinary collegiality and networking between the various graduate schools. I am personally choosing to only attend the REVISIT weekend in April. After scrutinizing the schedule, it seems to be much more bang for my proverbial buck.

The link for OneHarvard is http://isites.harvard.edu/icb/icb.do?keyword=oneharvard&pageid=icb.page413619

I'm extremely excited about the revisit and being accepted as a New Pathway student. I can't wait to meet all of you in the class of 2016.

I'm from New York and haven't received my packet. I'm assuming they haven't gone out yet..?

In Virginia, and I've received my packet...just kidding. I'm still waiting too. At least we know that nothing's wrong and that some vindictive neighbor didn't steal it. Haha

lol im so anxious to get it! that will make all of us this seem real lol 😍

I called today. They said it was sent out late last week. Should get here anyday.

So happy and excited to attend ONE Harvard and the second look!!! Any other minorities in the house!? : d

I got the packet up in Canada yesterday (courier). However It was sent to my father's address and now he is sending it to me by courier.

🙂

No packet yet... anybody else still waiting?

My packet when to my home and I am at school now so I don't have the information. The email said the second look is from April 19-21st. What are the times for the earliest activity and latest activity? Also, can I fly out Saturday night or is there an event then? I am trying to buy my plane ticket tonight. Thanks!

Does anyone know about the rooms in Vanderbilt? I'm filling out the form and part of me feels like I should request a "smaller room in a lower price range" .... but do I really want to do that? Any current HMS students or kids who have visited who have an opinion?

I don't remember the exact price difference, but the size difference was huge! I stayed in a small room with a host and we both could not even sleep in there so he had to stay with someone for the night. I did get to see the large room of another MS1 and it was pretty large for a dorm room.

Can any current students comment on HMS' financial aid? Is it generous? Is it negotiable? etc.... Or if there are no current students on here, anybody here ever hear anything significant about HMS' financial aid?... Thanks!

If you enjoy sleeping in a closet. The "small rooms" are like $50 less (~650-700) and can't even fit a bookshelf or dresser. It's ridiculous. Don't do it, everyone moves out immediately. The other rooms are fine.

Anyone feel like posting this year HMS's match list?
I am not going to post the full list, because I don't know if it's supposed to be internal-only. It has peoples' names associated with where they went. Here's the summative list:

Very generous if your familiy makes <120k. 120-150 pretty generous. >150, you might get a better deal elsewhere, but I'm not sure how it works up in that range.

The only negotiable part is if you think your family assets were somehow misrepresented or improperly interpreted.

Hey all,

Congratulations on getting accepted to HMS! I'm a current student and one of the revisit planners. If one of you could go ahead and make a facebook group titled "Harvard Medical School Class of 2016", we can assemble the class and answer questions there. Make sure that membership is by request only. Post a link to the group in this thread when it's made so everyone else knows where to go.

The convention is to post the list with locations but person names redacted. Little can be gleaned from the summative list.

Hey all, so I just went ahead and created the group to make things easier.

Here is the link: http://www.facebook.com/groups/139016756225212/ or you can search "Harvard Medical School Class of 2016", see you there!

Wow! That's very generous of them!

I really wish that I can attend Harvard Med because they have great research programs endowed with great faculty and great funding , but before I read your post, I probably wouldn't have gone there even if accepted since I didn't know if I could afford taking $250K in debt (Likely to be much greater w/ interest after residency) in this economy with its decreasing reimbursements and because my parents make <70K combined full time before taxes.

Your info about that has completely cleared my doubts!

Are you trying to figure out where people match? Pretty much no one matches into random rural programs or whatever, all the names sound big and fancy because we don't know what good programs are at this stage in the game. 44% stay in Boston, all of those went to BI/BWH/MGH. Two went to Mt Auburn (in Boston) for prelim year, which doesn't really count as not-BI/Partners. Another bunch to NY or CA for other big name programs.

It's a pain to redact this list because it's image-converted, I may do it later.

Family <120k will be ~100k in debt at the end before interest, IIRC.
