So, I am currently in applicant limbo. Not rejected, not invited for an interview (yet). I was wondering, does anybody know how Michigan feels about an "update" letter written solely to tell them how excited I am about UMich and how/why I'd be an excellent fit for their program?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and a HUGE congrats to all those already accepted!

(Part of me feels like I'm on the eventual pipeline to a rejection 🙁, anybody else in my shoes?)

I'm in the same boat 🙁

also in the boat of no love.

if you scroll to the top of this page (page 17) people havementioned that at least on the umich twitter page, they don't like LOI's. i've seen them tweet about this twice already, so i'd imagine they don't value them much. i don't think it hurts to send it but it definitely does not help, and they've said this a few times.

An LOI won't help and it actually might hurt, considering how they have said several times not to send them.

Thank you very much for the insight. 👍 I was considering doing that, but now I certainly won't! I just hope I get out of my "limbo" soon.

Waitlisted. Makes me worried about being competitive no matter what my stats and EC's. Old Asian male, is there a less desirable demographic? Can't think of one... except maybe whining old Asian male! 😉 Oh well, time to move on.

did any of you guys receive a scholarship along with your acceptance?

If I remember correctly (and judging by last year's thread), "recruitment" scholarships won't be announced until at least February or March. Here's to hoping at least some of us can avoid the pain of full OOS tuition! 🙂

Agreed!! I think they said that there was roughly *removed incorrect amount* in scholarships available for the class of 170 kids.

Are these "recruitment" scholarships need-based, so they would come out only after filling out the FAFSA?

Agreed!! I think they said that there was roughly $5 Million in scholarships available for the class of 170 kids.

For those who don't follow UMich's admissions twitter:
SDN-Scholarship amount cited not correct but will certainly be substantial & date of allocations was covered during interview day talk.

If I remember correctly since it has been a while since my interview day, the amount is closer to $2 million in scholarships. They are merit based not need based scholarships.

Ya, I just looked at my stuff and I mis-remembered... apologies. I should have double-checked before posting.

UMich Med admission Twitter: Morning phone conference with Dean of Admissions to discuss this weeks admission work. Priority: Defer candidates review-updates on 12/23.

Wouldn't an acceptance this week be the ultimate Christmas present? :xf:

twitter: 2 Admission Cycle Announcements: Admission Tracker Update Coming this week and the 1/27/2012 Interview Date will not be utilized.

does this mean they're done with II's now? 🙁 biggest sad face ever

They said there will be 2 dozen interviews left though!

Each interview day has 40+ applicants. So if they haven't sent out all the invites yet for the last January date, there might still be interview invites out there.

EDIT: I meant the last one that's still open.

5 OOS / 5 IS will be taken from defered lot per twitter. Not sure how big the defer pool is.

I am also curious how big the defer pool is... I think last year they took about 1/5 of the deferred list... but it could be completely different this year!

I suspect it's a bigger pool than in past years. Based on this cycle's tweets, ~20-25% of each interview group has been deferred. If 500 people have interviewed, that's 100-125 people. Don't know how many of those are "highly desirable" though, which skews the numbers.

tl;dr: I hope I get some good news on Friday.

From UM twitter: Busy morning: Defer candidate reviews-I believe the Cmmttee has nearly reached decisions. Outcomes posted to status page tmrrw @ 6 a.m.

Good luck everyone!

are these defers all "highly desirable" or just feb defers? so curious about the stats for all of this.

Yup, sounds like we are all "highly desirable". I think theyre just trying to make us feel better. Does anyone know if they will take anyone from this list? I doubt that many, feels like a rejection 🙁

It seems like last year they took a decent amount (~20%) of the February deferrals. This will obviously vary from year to year depending on how many spots are left (probably not too good for us based on the strength of the pool this year). I think we still have some form of a chance and should just let the process play out.

All pre-interview decisions will be completed by 1/20 per twitter. Here's to hoping for a bit of luck and hopping onto one of the last few interview days. :luck::xf:

Per Twitter: "We anticipate making a number of admission status updates (non-interviewed candidates) late this afternoon via status pages"

Today is also their second to last interview day...

Holding onto my last shred of hope! :luck:

ah here's to hoping for an interview but preparing for a rejection 🙁

just logged onto my account and saw that my file has been closed 🙁 did not receive an email to check my status yet so you guys might be able to check now too

me too. 🙁

File closed... Somewhat expected this late in the game, but still very frustrating. :boom::diebanana::boom:

Best of luck to all of you who haven't heard and congratulations to those accepted.

i got a file closed too (expected) with no email. 🙁 x10000000000000 i guess i was a little hopeful since they hadn't closed me earlier, but i think at this point they're only taking IS since there's only one interview date left

File Closed.

Disappointed. I was upper tier waitlist last time I applied and really improved my application in the last two years. I thought I'd at least get an interview again.

Must mean it wasn't meant to be. Congrats to the accepted, hopefully we really do get accepted at places that are the best fit for us.

A senior member of an ad com interviews a nontraditional medical school applicant and the give-and-take appears to be going well. The interview was supposed to last 30 minutes, but the interviewer brings it to a close after 20 with the statement, "Well, Jim, you are an unusual applicant and XYZMS is an unusual medical school."

I'm dying to find out what, if anything, the interviewer meant by the early termination and those enigmatic words.

That they are interested on the student? 🙂
