A senior member of an ad com interviews a nontraditional medical school applicant and the give-and-take appears to be going well. The interview was supposed to last 30 minutes, but the interviewer brings it to a close after 20 with the statement, "Well, Jim, you are an unusual applicant and XYZMS is an unusual medical school."

I'm dying to find out what, if anything, the interviewer meant by the early termination and those enigmatic words.

Just got the email! Guess I'll be here for a few more years....!

Nope, I haven't heard anything either. No interview, no rejection...my status page remains unchanged.

So after playing around with the numbers of acceptances and already interviewed candidates... things don't look too good for those of use who are deferred. :/

Can anyone please explain the latest Michigan tweet? Does this mean that those who interviewed during the last interview dates in January won't hear back on February 5 as planned?

I know they said not to check your status page every hour, but I can't help it!

I would think you'd still hear back as planned. That tweet is talking about people on the waitlist and with deferred decisions (not the people who interviewed on 1/20). Best of luck!

Got it! Thanks!

Last question: does anyone remember how many admissions offers are given? 675 interviews, 170 spots... x acceptance offers.

I don't remember exactly but I believe it was between 330-350 offers for the 170 spots.

Who all is going to the second look?! Also, is anyone planning on attending the Second Look Weekend: Focus on Diversity and Health Equity portion of the event (sounds interesting) or is that more geared towards URMs?

I want to go, but I'm not sure whether I'll have the funds to. Regardless, I am definitely not going to the Diversity event, as it directly conflicts with a mini vacation my mom is taking me on 😀

Well fellow deferees we are all that's left! Hopefully we learn our fate soon, five months of waiting is a long time. Good luck to all.

Director Ruiz just tweeted that we should hear back on Feb 24th at noon/eastern time! Has anybody heard how many people (if any) they're taking from the defer list?

Little tweets about final defer updates. But no numbers. Hope it is not zero.

Any other deferred 's out there patiently waiting?

Same here. Twitter didn't mention any numbers. My guess is that they didnt admit many.

Guess I can officially say adios to UM! Not getting out of this tier of the waitlist...

Good luck everyone! Hope there's finally some waitlist movement this year and some of you upper-tiers get in 🙂

Does anyone know when the first round of merit scholarships will go out? At my interview date, I remember hearing that it would happen sometime in March.

Thank you!

If we receive merit scholarships that cover some of the cost of attendance, but not all, should we expect the rest of the cost to be covered by loans only? I guess my question is does financial aid award grants (assuming there is still need of course) or only loans?

Merit scholarships cover some cost of attendance. You can also qualify for need based scholarships and grants that the school gives out. The rest of your financial need will be covered by loans.

Let me google that for you.

I believe there are need-based grants for students from poorer families. Your family may or may not qualify.

I was looking at this earlier, which is what confused me, as it implies that scholarships are given out only by the admissions committee. After pooghe said that there was other aid, I discovered this where it looks like there are more options for grants. I'm just hoping I don't have to sell my soul to go to med school...

I was deferred earlier and I got accepted, and I'm not anything special. Maybe you are what UMich is looking for? I hope so!

Congratulations on your acceptance! Unfortunately I was waitlisted :/ I know chances are slim-to-none, but I really hope for some waitlist movement this year!! UM is my dream school .

I know of a couple of awards that went out on Tuesday via email, one for full tuition and one for $30K/year.

Good luck to everyone waiting! This batch may or may not be complete, but I've read/heard that others will go out through April.

Isn't the time 5:22pm already in Michigan?
Shouldn't the office be closed by now?

True, but as dedicated as this admissions team is-- I wouldn't be surprised if they stayed a little over. I know some of them are traveling to an AAMC conference. Or maybe we aren't the chosen few. :/

They sent out scholarships earlier in the week too. I think when they gave today as the date they meant that all of the first round scholarships would be given out by today.

Anyone else on the waitlist get a "status update" e-mail this morning? I got super excited, but it turned out they had just removed the information on waitlist tiers (upper/middle/lower). Seriously, a status update to give me less information then I had before? Cruel and unusual, Michigan.

Are there any current students around that could comment on how generous UM's need-based financial aid is (for example, my family + my combined income is <100k/year)? How exactly does the need-based system work here (is it a unit-loan thing or something else)?

I got some pretty generous need-based financial aid from a few other schools, but my aid estimate from Michigan is not that great. It might be different for you...

I wonder if the Director can comment on the relative distribution of IS/NR from the first round of scholarships, and when he expects the second round to go out.

I am under the impression that the second round will not come out until enough people have turned down the initial round of scholarship offers, as they have already exceeded their allotted amount of scholarship amount for this class.
