Hi docapp201213! I'm a first year med @ Meharry and wanted to shed some light on your question, which is a great question! A lot of people ask about rankings, especially in relation to the US News rankings of medical schools that most people are familiar with here :http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools.

The key thing to consider is methodology. Rankings are based on information collected from the schools, peer rankings by deans and residency directors in different categories about their evaluation of the strength of different programs, NIH funding, faculty research, etc.

Is there value to these surveys? Sure. Do they tell the whole story? Absolutely not. For example, research intensive schools receiving NIH R01 researching funding will always score high in the area of research, while schools like Meharry, which has a primary care focus, and may not have beacoup $$ coming in in the form of R01 grants, may rank high in other areas, such as social mission (http://annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=745836). Schools may be unranked because 1) US News did not have enough information about them in the different categories to include them on the survey, and/or 2) survey respondents did not know enough about the schools to provide an accurate evaluation. (This is all speculation on my part, since I have no assess to the survey, nor empirical evidence or statistical tests to validate my hypotheses lol).

Medical education is standardized across the nation, and we are all learning the same thing because we are all going to take the same licensing exams. Furthermore, Meharry students perform just as well as students across the nation on our subject board and licensing exams. So, no matter where you get your education, as long as the school is LCME accredited, and you pass your classes and exams, you will get your MD degree! Oh, and, you'll probably end up in residency with a handful of people who went to those highly ranked institutions, although your patients will care less about that and more about your competency and compassion as a physician 🙂 I wish you the best, and let me know if you have any other questions!

Much Appreciated!!! thanks so much!

I am hoping its for direct entrance because I have an interview in about two weeks. I would tend to believe that most schools leave some spots for the whole cycle...I hope someone can give us both a definitive answer though.

I interviewed here Yesterday and they certainly still have slots open as they informed us we should hear either accepted or rejected waitlist etc within 2 weeks. My understanding is typically a school will leave open slots throughout the process or if not they will inform you that you are only interviewing for the waitlist- as they realize this may influence your decision of whether or not to pay for travel costs etc. to attend the interview.

Thank you for the info!

Made an account just to post this.

Interviewed here yesterday as well. I just want to say my experience here was great. The interview was laid back, the tour was very informative, and the students helpful.

What stuck with me was when I was getting ready to leave and a student saw me in my suit and figure I was interviewing. He took time out to talk with me and tell me about his experience with the school. Heck, he even invited me over for dinner. That gave me the chance to hang with a few second years for dinner and see their perspective of the school. Meharry doesn't have fancy tech, it doesn't have loads of money, but it has people that are passionate and down to earth. I'm happy I decided to go to the interview, it was definitely worth it.

For those who've interviewed:

How many interviewers and how long was each interview?

Interviewed on Monday and thought it went awesome, thought for sure I might get acceptance. Just received email / in top 10% of wait list , very bummed!

Sorry to hear about your wl position. Is anyone interviewing this Monday?

Does Meharry have a lot of waitlist movement?
I was waitlisted at the beginning of March 2012 (interviewed end of February), and accepted shortly before MAPS on June 25. Some of my classmates were even accepted a couple days in MAPS, so I think there is definitely hope for WL movement, although each year, it may change a bit.

When I applied, I asked about WL movement, and was told the committee would begin reviewing files again in April. After that, I just sent a couple of emails with updated semester grades and my interests around beginning of May and again in June, and the next email I got was an acceptance! Last year, they made decisions by about June 15th, so I'm assuming it might be a similar time line this year. Keep the faith, and most importantly, be patient!

Just curious, were you in regular or top 10% of waitlist? I saw old posts saying people got in off regular waitlist and was just wondering if that meant all those in the 10% got accepted eventually or how that worked.

I have an interview on April 8th... seems pretty late in the cycle so I'm questioning if I should even go -- Wouldn't it just be interviewing for a waitlist spot at that point?
It's $400+ for the trip and stay for the interview, and I already have one acceptance.

Should I go, or will most spots be filled by then?
Does anyone get accepted right away after an April interview?
😕

I guess it really depends on if Meharry is your top choice or not. I'd say unless it was, since you already have an acceptance, I would likely not go. But if it is your top choice then regardless go. It sounds like Meharry will likely accept a good number from the waitlist each year, obviously it will vary depending on the year...

Anyone on here interviewing next Monday? (Feb 25th, am session)

Got my rejection via email today....oh well 😕

Will interview here next month. Any one please give me a hint what the typical interview day looks like?

Hey, Guero has a detailed post about interview day a few pages back. I think he posted in in december.

No one interviewed yesterday?

Any one know the COA and tuition & fee at Meharry Medical College. What is "Yr 1 Decel" means in the second column of tuition & fee on the school website?

Meharry offers the option of taking decelerated 1st and I believe 2nd years, basically reducing the credit loadtfor students who may have struggled during maps or perhaps have family issues orother reasons causing them to need reduced coarse loads. At least that is my understanding, if anyone has better info feel free to correct me.

Just get a II for April. Anyone else get one or already accepted?
Advice for the interview? This is my only one so far so I have to ace it!

Be prepared for the usual why medicine? Why Meharry? Other than that just relax and be yourself. It was a very laid back and enjoyable interview day.

Hi! Just be yourself and relax. It was one of my easiest( meaning no stress) interviews. Be able to tell who you are. You should know what you wrote on your AMCAS and Meharry supplemental app because you hopefully were being honest. Other than that, get to know your interviewees and dont be afraid to ask questions. Arriving early is definately a plus might I add. There are two different groups ( an early 8ish and little later early 10am). you meet with fin aid counselor, have lunch with students and some M1 and M2 (Had 4 med students both M1 AND M2), then depending on the group you are in :there is a quick, minimal tour of where you would have class and little of Meharry and then interview or vice versa. Oh and interview is 30min, and trust me it goes by faster than you think1 🙂

I interviewed on Feb 11th and still haven't heart from them. Is this the case for others who've interviewed on this date? If not, should I give them a call?

I found out my acceptance a week in a half. Two weeks should be min. A call won't hurt. Do it!

I interviewed that day also, however I found out two days later , thursday the 13th that I was waitlisted. I would definitely call and see, maybe they split up the group into two different meetings of the admissions committe, but who knows.

Hi,
I have a question about Meharry's interview invitations.
I have been completed since 9/26. On that completion email, it says that the review process will take about 6 weeks.
And now it has definitely been past 6 weeks and I did not receive any notifications from the admissions committee.
I am just wondering if I should continue waiting for a response or I should contact them first about my status or I should send them an update letter.
Thank you in advance for answering. 😕

I just have a question for any current student in here. I was accepted here and I am worrying about cost/expenses for the first few months. I am an out of state student and it will probably cost me a lot of money to relocate and cover up my first few month expenses before I receive the loan payment and stuff. How did you guys manage to relocate and finance your first few months ? Did you guys receive any help from the school ? I am also asking this because I am supper broke and I have no Idea how I am going to finance my first few months at the school, any input will be highly appreciate it. Thanx in advance.

This. I called and they split my group into two.

How did they inform you - via email and/or phone?

Forever looker, first time post. I was late in my application and submitted secondary mid January. Got an interview invite a week later for feb 18th pm group and got waitlisted (top 10%) 2 days later feb 21st . I really wonder if anyone got acceptance who interviewed in Feb or are we just interviewing for the waitlist..

I highly doubt they are only interviewing for the waitlist - Most schools inform you if they are because it affects a lot of people's decisions to attend. Most schools keep spots open open until the end of their interview cycle.

Hey, I had a end of Feb interview - do you think direct acceptance is possible?

I would think it was possible to get an acceptance still. However, I did call school and asked about how likely getting accepted off the top 10% list was. She said it was a very small pool . She basically said everyone on that list in past has been eventually offered a spot, if they did not attend meharry it was because they chose to go elsewhere. So that made me feel alot better.

Thats great to hear... Hope to hear some good news in the months to come.

Top 10% of Waitlist - Interviewed Feb 25th. From what I hear, it looks good for those in the top 10% - Praying for victory and thankful its coming.

Do we have any idea how many people are in this seemingly small pool of applicants - the top 10% ?
