I been checking out plane tickets, and wow they are more expensive than I anticipated haha. I'm definitely going to look into doing the student host program! I was surprised by how expensive tickets are as well, but it'll be worth every penny for an acceptance haha.

Does anyone know at what point you are actually committed/sign a contract for USUHS? Is it the same as other med schools with respect to time frame? (spring)

Hi all,
I applied to USUHS in mid July, however I retook the MCAT on August 10th and am still waiting to receive my score. I contacted the person who is charge of my list of surnames to request confirmation that my secondary application was received over a week ago, and still have no response. Should I be worried? I am not sure if I should email her again because I do not want to seem like a pest, but it has me a little worried because I sent the application through the mail. Any feedback is appreciated.

Invite to Interview today!!! For SEP 20th. I had my secondary completed on 24 July.

Oh no. I sent in my secondary on 7/19 and I still haven't heard anything from them.

Oh well. Things happen. On to the next one.

My first interview invite today! And it's my #1 choice! Anyone else going Sept. 27th?

Reagan is the easier airport for the metro, but there's also Dulles. You have to catch a bus to get to the rail so it'll take a little longer, however Dulles is generally cheaper if you're flying from across the country (i.e. California). I've found jetblue to be the cheapest for me (and they have direct flights, always a plus).

I'm flying to Reagan as well, going to get there early the day before so that I can prepare etc! Just bought my first suit to prepare for the interview haha, getting pretty excited! USUHS is definitely my #1 school, I'm strictly considering military medicine through HPSP or USUHS, but USUHS is the top priority.

Anyone else trying to do the student host program? I signed up for it, I think it'll be nice to get interview opinions/suggestions etc.

Does anyone know if it is difficult to get from Reagan to the school? Also any interview suggestions/tips are greatly appreciated.

BTW anyone else going on the 20th?

Hey guys,

I don't have a clinical reference letter, should I even bother with the app? Is it too late anyway?

Thanks.

I was wondering if any current USUHS students can give their opinion of the school. Especially what branch they are in and how they like that specific branch/the new curriculum. I have an interview this september and am looking forward to visiting the school. Thanks!

Did anyone request a confirmation email and not get one? It's been over a week since I sent mine. Don't want to badger them, but...

Did anyone else get a confirmation email from admissions this morning? They wrote me to confirm that they have received my completed secondary and all of my letters of rec. I did not request this confirmation.

Thing that bugs me about it is I completed my secondary a month and a half ago. I sent it in through email and they confirmed their receipt at that time. My secondary should have been completed long ago, letters and all. Other schools have had all my info for ages, I've already got interviews scheduled.

Do you think there might have been a technical issue with my file? Why do I get this random confirmation all of the sudden?

@tromd: I wouldn't hesitate to ask for a confirmation. Did you submit through email? When I submitted mine I asked for confirmation of receipt, and they confirmed the next morning.

I requested one immediately after submitting my secondary via email. They said nothing... I didn't want to resend anything, but since they haven't confirmed it makes me feel like they didn't get it.

So I was invited for an interview on the 27th, and I just got the security clearance info emailed to me, but the subject line said "20 Sept applicants". So I'm wondering if they got me mixed up on the dates, do you guys think I should call them to make sure that they still have me planning on coming on the 27th?

Probably not. It's highly unlikely your interview changed. The SF-86 was sent out to two interview groups at a time when I interviewed and that probably hasn't changed.

About to submit... Should I do email or mail????? Doesn't matter to me

Interview invite today via email!!!! Stats ~3.6/32 and I have no prior military experience. My app was complete somewhere around the beginning of August. I'm looking forward to seeing what this place is all about!

Hey all, I got an interview invite today as well. I'm a 3.65/35R. I was complete a few days after they released the secondary.

I have been considering military medicine for a while, and I've read for hours through the milmed forum on SDN. I'm still not sure how to rank the services. I'm not really interested in the PHS, but are there any USUers that care to comment, yet again, on the students and their service choices. It seems that a bunch of people are happy with the Navy, given the base locations, training hospital prestige and locations, quality of life, commissary, etc. I would also like serving soldier, but people seem inconsistent on their feelings for the Army. Also, the Air Force seems to not get much love for their medical system, which surprises me since life in the AF would probably be more up most doctors alley. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Does anyone know the breakdown of how many spots there are in the army, navy, air force, or public health services?

can anybody comment on the new curriculum? I know it provides for only 1.5 years of classroom learning before starting clerkships, instead of the more traditional 2 years. I was just wondering what some current students' experiences have been with that format.

Interview invite for October!! Going to have to reschedule to November due to work conflicts though. So excited to see this school!

Does anyone know the ratio of how many II's there are to acceptances at USUHS? My interview is Thursday, and I'm really hoping for an acceptance!!

I'm glad that they notify us 4-6 weeks post interview... if I get an acceptance by then, I can stop worrying haha.

my understanding is that they accept approximately 50% of those who interview. I believe the numbers are something like ~600 interviews to ~300 acceptances for a class of 170.

They said it was something like 45% during interview day last week. So yes, you are correct!

my advice is to not listen to anything swtbrnpelican has to say. he knows absolutely nothing. Do the opposite of what he says

Just had my interview at USUHS, and it was awesome! The school really seems like a great opportunity.

I'm especially impressed by the new integrated curriculum, and the sense of camaraderie that I felt from the students.

I definitely suggest doing the student host program, it was a great experience for me. My hosts were fantastics.

I don't know what to think of their new curriculum. I like the idea of starting clinical's earlier, but waiting a year after sciences instruction before taking step 1 seems like a terrible idea to me.

How'd the interview go AFER?

It went well. Both the the guys I interviewed with were active duty O-6's (one AF/one Army) so we just talked about the military. I talked to the Air Force guy a lot about medicine - but he ran out of questions after about twenty minutes so we talked about flying and a base we'd both been to. With the Army guy and I talked about military research and then eventually got on a joint Army/AF issue he brought up.

Academy/ROTC kids get to cheat a bit since they don't have the answer the whole "military medicine" question as much since the "military" side has already kinda been answered.

All in all, I really enjoyed the day. Coming from the Academy - where people can be cynical as hell and really really negative (myself including) it was awesome to see USUHS and how happy people were! Polar opposite from USAFA. And honestly, I was shocked how little military involvement there really was - they tried to talk to up - but especially once I met up with all the Academy grads that were there it was pretty clear it was a very low threat environment in terms of "military stuff."

Yeah, I'd have to agree. I interviewed on the 20th. I'm prior military (enlisted) and I felt a very different attitude within the medical corps. Admin, professors, and students were all very very friendly. Great team oriented environment.

About the new curriculum, I love it. To me it seems more sensible to learn pharm, micro, path together with normal function. As far as concern about taking step 1 after clerkships, there are plenty of articles out there comparing schools that take this approach vs traditional and there isn't a difference in scores although I have seen some schools claim that those who take step 1 after clerkships score higher but who knows. Good luck to everyone! I love USUHS and you will too!

Do you guys think acceptance notifications will come in October or November? My student host said we'd get notified either the 15th or 16th, but the admissions people said November 1st.

Any opinions? I'm really hoping for the 16th, so I can save the $$ on flying to my other interviews haha

Last year they started coming out by the 17th (check the 2011-2012 forum). I think last year they called applicants but this year I was told we should expect an email so I expect it will be a bit more efficient.

When did admissions tell you Nov 1st? When did you interview? I interviewed Sept 20th and I believe they said October 16.

When do they start the background investigation? Like the full blown interviews and such... I believe the man in the sec office said only after being admitted (like the Fall). Apparently all they do is a preliminary screen during the Med school application process? He told me I passed the preliminary screen and I just passed my physical/eye exam so am I good to go for a unconditional offer?

The papers they handed out at the interview said to expect a response within 4-6 weeks for people interviewing in September. But later on the admissions staff suggested that we adjust our expectations to more like 8 weeks, just so we're not freaking out come 10/15. Personally, I'm hoping for Thanksgiving just so I don't go crazy waiting.

Good luck everyone!

^agreed. I'm already going crazy waiting :/. I also interviewed on 9/20.
One of the admissions staff told me it would occur after Halloween (she actually said trick or treat etc)

It's going to be awesome if they start coming out mid October.
I'm constantly doubting myself etc & thinking about it haha.

Edit** plus it will be really nice if we can tell our family on Thanksgiving that we've already been accepted haha
I actually had a nightmare with getting a call and told I was being placed on the Alternate list haha.

to those who already have interviews- how long after your secondary was complete did you hear back? its been five weeks since mine was in and i was wondering if im just sol.

I was complete 8/27 and received interview 9/14. I submitted my secondary 7/1. Hope this helps. Good luck.

If you are accepted you will get a call. I do not know exactly when they will start notifying people though. Last year's thread may shed some light on that.

This is correct. They will do a quick prelim to make sure you aren't a criminal. Your final security clearance paperwork won't be submitted until orientation. Security clearances are a costly and lengthy process so they will only do them for folks who are actually accepted.

Thanks for the info, Cooperd0g!

I got an email on 9/5 asking about multiple MCAT attempts and how I studied for the last one (score went up 6 pts). No prior military, but im really interested in this school. Im thinking they already rejected me...🙁 Anyone received additional emails about their app?

I got an email asking for an explanation of withdrawals on my transcript, and I got an interview. Maybe it shows that they're actually interested in you.

*sigh* I hope so. I'm still waiting...When did you get an II after that email?

I never got any emails like that.. :/ but then again I only have 1 W, and 1 MCAT score.
Good luck guys.

Ok that was no help. Please reply if you can actually answer question and not rub it in.

I honestly don't know. I must have deleted the email. Probably 3 Or so weeks.
