Hey I was wondering if any current students or anyone familiar with the area could give me some ideas of the best places to live on or around campus.

Thanks!

it really depends what you are looking for....are you single? married with kids? want to live solo? with roomates? roomates who are in medicine? roomates who are not?

there is very affordable housing offered on the UC Irvine campus with a wide range of costs and luxury....if you are most concerned with living as cheaply as possible, you can't beat the prices of the lowest priced on-campus housing. thats pretty much the only positive thing i could say about living on campus. Irvine itself is boring and uneventful, so for me personally i was willing to spend extra money to live elsewhere.

i lived in newport beach for the first two years, a block from the water. Affordable, and for me was an awesome place to live. i lived with two other medical students and the house still has medical students, and is being passed down year after year.

some pepole lived in huntington, orange, and other surrounding areas of irvine. there are many many options, you kinda just need to know what you are looking for, no one here can really tell you the best place for you to live

Thanks. I'm single, but am really up for anything as far as housing goes. I'm not sure exactly how much loans I will be able to get to live on, so I don't know if I want to live alone or with roommates. Coming from Oklahoma, all of the apartment prices that I've seen around Irvine seem crazy expensive, so I'm having a hard time even getting a feeling of what a good price is around there. I don't even know how I would go about finding a good roommate for the first semester, since I don't plan on going back to Irvine until I move there. I was just looking for some viable options, and how people feel about different locations and how much money is worth living in what kind of conditions.

I'm in a similar situation, though coming from Northern California, where rent is also much cheaper. It seems that UCI does not guarantee on-campus housing to med students. I am currently on their housing waitlist. Also looking for alternatives.

A block from the water sounds ideal! Do you mind quoting the per occupant rate?

is UCI done offering II? UCI is my top choice, I was complete late september and sent a LOinterest in January. I was thinking about sending an update letter. Worth it?

i guess it depends what part of northeran califronia you are from, b/c SF is certainly not cheap.

Its not 'gauranteed' but pretty much everyone gets it that wants it, even those that are on the waitlist. If i remember correctly i think everyones on the waitlist at somepoint.

In newport we had a pretty good deal and i paid like 720 for the month + utilities. Most places will cost more though.

yea, do not expect to find any place remotely close to anything you saw in Oklahoma, it just won't happen. Again, if cheapest is your concern you'll want to live in Verano on UC Irvine campus.

when it gets closer to the start of school there will be a facebook group started and people kind of talk through their to find housing and roomates. I think there is also a housing/roomate website specifically for UCI but i'm not sure how much that is used as it was started the year after i got there.

For those of you on the alternate list like me, I sent an update letter yesterday and they responded to say they would add it to my file, but the alternate list won't be looked at until May.

Thanks for the info! I was just getting ready to do an exhaustive search of this thread for any mention of the alternate list haha so you saved me a bunch of time 🙂

I received an II today after being under review since August. The interview is at the end of April. Does anyone know if there will still be spots open in the class by then? Am I interviewing for a spot on the wait-list?

Awesome news, congrats! I'd like to know what others think about this as well 👍👍

They swear up and down and even say on interview day that they don't do interview days specifically for waitlists, and everyone at every interview day has a shot (about 1/3 accepted outright). Decent odds! Good luck!

That's what they told me when I interviewed there. All interview days are for spots.

Congratz! Did you have any choices in interview dates? I've also been under review since August and wondering how many interview spots are left at this point...

Guys, I'm getting so antsy for my upcoming interview. (Get it? antsy??)

Is it safe to say turnaround time from interview to decision is 4-6 weeks?

Anyone else still waiting to hear something? submitted my secondary in sept and im still under review... are they still inviting people?

My interview is on April 1st, but I haven't heard back from a student host. Should I begin booking a hotel?

they get back to you pretty last minute so maybe wait another week or so?

Have any alternate listed applicants sent update letters since you were waitlisted? If so, were they accepted?

If you're interested in moving up your date let them know. I got mine moved up as people dropped out and opened up slots.

they will accept them but not look at them until may. i will probably send a letter at the end of this month and another at the end of next.

Match Day was amazing! This year was an amazing year for ortho (at least 8 matches - USC, UCD, UCI, Brown) and anesthesiology (2-UCSF, including 1 research track, 1-MGH, & 1-Stanford). I'll post the match list when I get it.

Yes this years class did very well! We were told it was one of the best matches ever in terms of number of people matching. Only 2 1/2 did not match, and I know two of them were because of errors in application (literally filled out application incorrectly) and another person only ranked one program for personal reasons (ill advised) and it unfortunately ended up not working out. And as you mentioned we had a lot of people going in to competitive fields that matched so that is really cool.

This being said, I will again urge caution in interpreting a match list from any school. This list tells you very little about the school itself and it's pretty much impossible to interpret outside the context of each individual person. So, using any schools match list as a serious factor in deciding between schools is not a good way to go about it. There are just too many variables that you can't possibly know about or take into account.

II today! Completely shocked, thought for sure this wasn't a possibility, assumed all invites out already! Complete 8/21, Interview scheduled for the 24th of April. Hope I have more luck than I had last year!

Rejected today, pre-interview. Complete what feels like a decade ago. Good luck to everyone else!

Rejected today, ugh, my last shot of staying in Cali, and my top choice- Sent two LOI one in January and one 2 weeks ago. Ugh, I really wanted to go to UCI :/

Has anyone who interviewed on February 25 heard back yet?

Has anyone who interviewed on February 25 heard back yet?

Yes, I interviewed on Feb 25th and got an acceptance call yesterday from Dr. Peterson. (Hope you did too!—best of luck)

Nothing yet. If I remember correctly, they said they would notify us by April 1st...

Congratulations...great news! Nothing for me yet unfortunately. Keeping my fingers tightly crossed!

I'm on the alternative list and just got an invite for Revisit Day. The way they worded it in the invite is that not all alternate list people get invites. Who else on the alternate list got this email?

Same here, and the wording was strange. Wondering the same thing.

I interviewed on February 25 and still haven't received an admissions decision. FYI for those who are also waiting, I called the Admissions Office today and was informed that the Committee is still reviewing applicants from that date. Best of luck to everyone in the same boat!

those on the alternate list who got the invite to revisit day--are you gonna go?

debating it, im from out of state, so its a pretty high cost with zero guarantee that my going will even be noticed by the adcom

That sounds like a good thing! I'm guessing this means you guys are probably top of the waitlist? Not gonna lie, I'm a little jealous 😛
