Yup, it was $100.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes to receive the campus assignment after mailing the preference card in? I'm anxious because if I don't get the Chicago track, I'll end up going to Rosalind Franklin instead. If I go to Rosalind Franklin, I can still live at home and not take out additional loans for housing. If I get UIC's UPR track, then I will have to take out additional loans to cover the cost of living.

What do you guys think???

you are too old to live at home

Lol!!! I'm too old to live at home?!? The ignorance of that response took me by surprise. I would think a medical student would be too busy to make childish remarks like that. I guess people are a lot more brave when talking through the computer!

Anywho, thanks everyone else for the thoughtful responses. I just want to try to figure out which situation would be the most ideal for me financially.

I feel you think too highly of medical students.

Maybe so :-/.... But, I guess with all of the studying we will be doing when we start med school, we'll need some type of outlet!!! Maybe one day I'll be trolling studentdoctor.net looking for posts to which I can make obnoxious responses.

I don't think I could handle living at home during medical school. Home has always been a place for me to relax and enjoy myself. It would be ripping that way from me and turning it into a place to study. I don't think I could concentrate well there with the constant attack of food and tv shows from my parents.

Accepted!!!!!! I agree with......home is not an environment conducive to learning.....plus I don't know how I would feel living at home till my late 20s

Oh I totally agree, I just saw it as rather rude that someone would shoot their mouth without considering the option.

Hey guys, I'm just wondering, do we have to register for second look, or can we just show up, if we're coming alone. I wasn't able to tell from the e-mails.

Sooo... anyone get a GMED interview invitation? Just wondering if they went out yet since the interviews are supposed to be on Friday.

I have a few of questions about the three campuses:
1) on a scale of 0-2 how would you rate mentorship at Chicago, Peoria, and Rockford? 2 being the highest
2) is there a lot of early patient interaction in preclinical years?
3) are there any small group sessions? If so how often?
4) is there a simulation lab that is utilized by students as well as residents?
5) does anyone have a reason that they would choose Rockford over the other campuses?
6) a decent amount of the current students I interacted with during my interview came across considerably arrogant... Of course I'll find that at any school, but I've interviewed at schools in all tiers - I witnessed the most arrogance and least humility at UI. Can anyone comment on that please?

when I interviewed back in October they mentioned they were making some changes to the currculum...does anyone know what they entail?

Regarding 6) I interviewed at all tiers as well and one of the med student tour guides (an M4) here was my hands down favorite, most down-to-earth, real med student I met on the trail. So just like the general population, you will find both nice and arrogant med students anywhere.

Nice scale for number 1.

What do you mean by arrogant? We all have different meanings behind that. Also remember; its a medical school. The grand majority of med students I've met have always been arrogant in my opinion.

i would also love to know the answers to these! especially 2-4. Any current students???

Did anyone who has been sitting in decision pending get an email about not being chosen in March??

Chicago Track!!! Woo Hoo! Interviewed February 19, 2013!!!!

A few questions about UMed 😍:

1. Anyone have an idea of how many interview for UMed vs. how many get accepted into the program?

2. Probably a silly question, but are UMed interviews about the same level of formality as med school admission interviews?

3. Anyone know when interviewees will hear back about UMed decisions? Before May 15 hopefully?

Thanks in advance for anyone who could offer some info.

Also wanna know this!!!

Has anyone received a UMed invitation in the last few days? I got an e-mail last week that said that they were still making decisions about invites and that we should know soon. I'm not in Illinois so hopefully they let me know soon either way so I can make travel plans.

I'm probably at a disadvantage because I didn't interview until 3/18, don't even know if I'm accepted yet and didn't apply to UMed until Dean Girotti encouraged us to do so even after the deadline.

Got a GMed interview today! Pretty excited 🙂

Also, generally, should we be RSVP-ing to Second Look Day?

Accepted! Interviewed 3/8. Took forever to get the letter

Answering with regards to Chicago campus:

I have a few of questions about the three campuses:
1) on a scale of 0-2 how would you rate mentorship at Chicago, Peoria, and Rockford? 2 being the highest

1. You don't get your hand held, but there is a lot of opportunity for early mentorship by both residents and attendings. It is department-specific, but I've heard mostly good things.

2) is there a lot of early patient interaction in preclinical years?

Yes. You are assigned to a PCP as an M1 whose clinic you visit to work on history physical. As M2, you have the option of mentorship in a specialty or continuing primary care mentorship. There is also the practicum component of M2, where you spend ~6 weeks throughout M2 year in the hospital seeing patients, working on note and presentation skills with attendings and residents in dedicated sessions. Very helpful prep for M3.

3) are there any small group sessions? If so how often?

Yes, about 50% of afternoons throughout M1/M2. Most of the major classes incorporate something small group-based.

4) is there a simulation lab that is utilized by students as well as residents?

Yes, but you don't go there terribly often, and I haven't heard of anyone just trying to drop by the simulation center.

5) does anyone have a reason that they would choose Rockford over the other campuses?

Interest in rural medicine.

6) a decent amount of the current students I interacted with during my interview came across considerably arrogant... Of course I'll find that at any school, but I've interviewed at schools in all tiers - I witnessed the most arrogance and least humility at UI. Can anyone comment on that please?

No idea what you mean by this. Maybe you can't handle our swag.

Does anyone know how soon your status changes on the thursday of the adCOM meeting?

Thanks VisionaryTics

If anyone from the Peoria campus is available to chime in on those questions too it would be nice.

Some programs have integrated mentorship where you are assigned to a faculty member from day one. That's why I asked about that one. As far as question 6, I guess that just happened to be the group of students that were available to interact with use that day. Not all of them were like that of course, but just more than what I'd seen. In hindsight it was so obvious that it's kinda funny. The purpose of that question was to get a feel for the culture of the school. Some places are cutthroat while other places aren't.

Mine was the same day for sure. But not exactly sure at what time. I saw it changed when I checked at 7pm after several attempt before 4pm. So best guess it around 6/7pm.

Between, I'm from NJ so I'm 1 hr ahead.

You're assigned to a faculty member right from the beginning of M1 year at UIC too. I met mine during the first week of school. However, how often you meet afterward, what you utilize your mentor for, etc, depends on you and the mentor. The school doesn't force you to meet with him/her a certain number of times or anything like that -- they leave that entirely up to you. It's also pretty easy to find mentors too, if you're interested in a different field, for example. I shot an email to a professor the other day, already met up with him for some career guidance, he already introduced me to another faculty member who can give me more advice, etc.

As far as culture goes, I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who comes off as arrogant or gunnerish (at least in my class). Like I've mentioned in previous posts, I absolutely love my classmates!

Just got notified that I'm on the waitlist for a UMed interview pending a final decision on my application. Hopefully I get some good news this month!

You and me both, brother. I'm hoping that this late april adcom meeting has many openings from people withdrawing acceptance that open up spaces for all of us…HOPING!! 🙂

Bump?

Some info I picked up, for mievans and anyone else interested: the interviews are either just before or just after the second look event.

I just withdrew an acceptance/scholarship, so hopefully that means on Monday someone will get admitted, and someone who has already been admitted will be offered a scholarship 🙂
Best of luck!!

Yo, can anyone speak to living in the UIC medical apartment housing? It's about $1k a month, which seems pretty reasonable. I just know that a lot of people are looking around for housing opportunities, and it seems like these are getting overlooked.

I was also wondering about this!

adCOM week!!!! good luck everyone 🙂

Personal request for those who have been accepted and know that they aren't going…If you could withdraw your acceptance to open up some spots for us, then you would just be so awesome 😀

Are you talking about the SSRs? Heard nothing but bad things. Most people who lived there moved out ASAP.

I pay $650 now with a 10-minute commute by bus. When I lived in Little Italy, it was $750 with a 10 minute walk. Keep in mind, this is with a roommate, but $1k isn't cheap for the area.
