Just popping in. I'm a reapplicant. I LOVE UNR. The campus is beautiful and the program is amazing. It's in my top 2.

They sent secondaries out really late last year. Anyone have news yet?

I am in-state and haven't received the Secondary yet.

Just an FYI people from Arizona and Utah can now apply as OOS.

Are there any essay prompts? I don't remember there being any last year, but I could be mistaken...

Mind posting them? I'd really like to pre-write this one.

Indicate any paid or volunteer work experience, activities, or duties and the amount of time spent which you feel to be relevant to the study of medicine (NOTE: Include dates and hours).
Have you had any practical experience in laboratory or medical research?

Hi all,

A question for those who have submitted their secondary. Under the Home button in the online application, does anyone have the message "Your application is NOT ready!" next to "App Complete"? I thought this might just mean that they haven't reviewed it yet, but it's been over three weeks now since I submitted so I'm starting to wonder.

Thanks and good luck.

I believe that means something is missing from your app

Thanks for the response. I should've given more info. They have everything: LORs, MCAT scores, state residency form, etc. so I should be good. I'll e-mail them if no one else has seen this message. Just wanted to check here first. Thanks again.

I definitely would. Maybe it's just a glitch in the system? The second I paid my app fee and they had everything my status went from not ready to review to ready to review.

OK good to know. I'll e-mail them. Thanks 🙂

In State

Got an interview invite today. They give you 4 dates and you give your preference of those dates. Really excited to receive an II.

Mind letting us know when you submitted and your stats?

They send it via email and then you send the form back saying which days are your first, second, and third choices. And if you want to interview in Reno or Vegas.

Decent stats. MCAT around 30, GPA above 3.6, pretty solid EC's and letters.

Anyone else hear back?

oh and I was complete 8/29 so a little under a month to hear back.

Complete 8/31 and still nothing here, but my stats are a little lower than yours.

Hey everyone,

I'm an UNSOM first-year. This forum helped me out when I was applying, so I'm returning the favor. Let me know if you have any questions and good luck.

I just called and spoke with Cathy. When primaries arrive she reviews them and makes sure they meet minimum requirements and then they go to a committee who review them further and determines whether a secondary will be sent. Right now all OOS applications are still in the committee review process and no OOS secondaries have been sent out yet.

Thanks for the info! I was wondering why things were taking so long for OOSers.

Hello. Have you had any exposure to the anatomy lab? If so do they teach ultrasound techniques? Also, what do you think of the new systems based curriculum? Thanks for your time.

Well I just got my rejection letter in the mail. I'm so confused... UNR was pretty much tied with WWAMI as my top school. And I really felt like of all of the schools I applied to I had the best chances of getting in here.

I interviewed last year and they said that if re-applicants improve their apps in the areas they tell them to they have a much much stronger chance at acceptance than other OOS applicants. I did all of the things they told me they wanted to see improved...and didn't get an interview.

I feel like if I got rejected from the school I had the best chance at pre-interview... Ugh I don't know. I'm pretty upset right now. 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 Now I'm going to go back through my primary app again and check for some possible error or something. I mean of course I was thorough the first time, and rechecked everything before I submited it but now I'm really stressing out. Did I mess up somewhere? I am going to call them and ask why I didn't make the cut. Maybe because they opened up OOS spots to more states they are accepting less Alaskans and/or OOS applicant just need to up the game that much more.

Good luck to everyone still in the running. UNR is a great school and has an amazing program. :xf:

Hello,

I'm a third year student attending UNSOM. Once a year I try to make it a point to visit this thread and offer any advice or answer any questions. I'm fairly up to date with the interview process but obviously things change rapidly. I am not interviewing any students this year so there is no conflict of interest, but some of the people you will be interviewing with are my friends. I do know MOST if not all of the people on the adcom.

Questions I cannot answer are what the curriculum reform is/will be like, what to do for xy residency (you shouldn't be worrying about that yet), whether you're competitive for this cycle or not. I'm either out of the loop on these things or wasn't subject to them (such as the curriculum reform).

Questions I can answer are what the campuses are like at UNR, UNLV, UMC, Renown, what the professors are like, what classes were hard/easy for me, what third year is like, what step 1 is like for an UNSOM student, how often I sleep, how many friends I still have now having been in medical school for 3 years, what its like having a relationship at UNSOM (I proposed and will be getting married this December) and how things like that integrate into your daily life as a med student. I'd be happy to talk about any and all of my experiences, good and bad, no question off limits in regards to daily life/personal life outside of school in case you're wondering how to adapt to med school. PMs are fine if you want to talk about your life and want my thoughts, whatever they're worth. At least one person has found them helpful before. I think.

Good luck. It only gets worse from here.

Does anyone know what percent of in-state applicants receive an interview?

Hello. Have you had any exposure to the anatomy lab? If so do they teach ultrasound techniques? Also, what do you think of the new systems based curriculum? Thanks for your time.
Hello,
Yes, you will start working in the anatomy lab during Block 1. The lab is brand new, and we are only the second class to use it. Each table has its own flat screen television, audio system, and computer so that you can watch the dissection videos, go over objectives, search the internet etc. while you are working. It is extremely nice and well put together to say the least. I feel very lucky to be able to work there. (The lecture hall is also new and technologically awesome.)

As for ultrasound techniques - not sure sorry. Maybe you can ask that during interviews b/c honestly I am not sure exactly what you are looking for. I can say that UNSOM has a great simulation program with mannequin models that can produce heart and lung sounds, different pathologic states that affect these sounds, the mannequins can speak to you and respond to treatment, have real vital signs, pulses, blood pressure, heart rhythm - the whole nine. All of this happens in a mock hospital room - very cool. We do review ultrasound throughout the different blocks - cardiology and OB for ex. if that helps. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers!

Oh and to answer your other question about the systems based curriculum it is really nice. It ties everything together logically and cohesively. Systems based is very helpful with thinking big picture, it helps to better prepare for the boards (the exams are more similar to board exams b/c they cover a wide range of subjects path/histo/biochem/anatomy etc. in one sitting), and it helps students to start thinking clinically right away - What is the differential diagnosis? How would I treat this patient?
I also like it because you don't just study biochem (for example) and then forget it until the boards. You keep getting exposed to the different subjects with each new system, and often times things are related so you get the knowledge refreshed in your mind. In addition, every week we have a case presented to us by specialists that relates to the system we are studying which I have found very helpful. Hope all this helps please let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers.

I received my secondary yesterday and an interview invite today. Out of State applicant.

Have any other OOS people heard anything good or bad?

Nothing yet. I called on Tuesday and was told the out-of-state committee is meeting and making decisions this week, so it won't be too long.
