Recently completed a fair amount of research with CHOP - The partnership sprouted from UTHSCSA administration having former ties to the institution . FWIW it's ostensibly the top peds hospital in the nation

Oh well damn there you go.

That sounds awesome, great opportunity for UTHSCSA students!

I heard Christus and Methodist are a little pissed off though..........but you didn't hear it from me lol :ninja:

Just curious if anybody knows how many spots schools leave open for the match. Is UTHSCSA match heavy? Also, do most people get either their number 1 or number 2 in the match?

No activity here, even before match day 😕

Good luck to everyone!!:luck:

ACCEPTED CLASS OF 2017!!!!!!!

So let's go ahead and get a facebook group going if there is not already one started

I second that motion.

Also the match confirmed my pre-match here. Yay!

Congratulations for those who were accepted!! For those on wait-list, don't give up, I am rooting for y'all!!

Facebook: I clicked join group, but seems like someone has to accept (or invite?) me to become a member. Can't wait to be the member of class of 2017!!

This is weird...

I Matched to UT Houston, and got a congrats email from them.
THEN... like 2 hours ago got this from San Antonio:

"Congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Texas School of Medicine at San Antonio. Now that the match is complete, we can tell you more about our wonderful group of new medical students and also update you on our curriculum and other matters."

Not really sure what to make of it... Did they send this to their whole prematch list too? Anyone else get it?

Accepted! Native San Antonian here, super excited! 😍

My understanding is that we'll see some trickling movement starting in the second half of May, based on people being forced to give up any extra seats they're hoarding on the 15th.

Could an MS 1 student explain about the weekly quizzes on fridays and the pre-/in class/post- class hw? Are the quizzes and hw difficult, what does it cover, it is time consuming, etc? Thanks!

If anyone has considered military medicine and wants more info, let me know. I am in the Navy's HSCP program and it pays pretty well, full health benefits for you and your family, etc. Send me a private message if you want more info.

Depending on the module you are in, there will be at least 1, but often 2 quizzes per week. Every Monday there is information put out on the "case of the week." The weekly cases are representative of the overall topic of the week. On Wednesday, a pre-test (which is just a completion grade) is due related to that case. When you complete that pre-test, more information on the case is released to you. On Friday, you will take a quiz related to the case of the week. These quizzes aren't usually too difficult, but they can cover a large amount of information. It is all self-study, so if you didn't put much effort into it you will likely find it difficult.

Alternatively, some modules have a weekly quiz related to a particular topic or group of topics covered in class over that week. Personally, I have found these more difficult than the Friday case quizzes, but maybe that's just me. Not every module will have a weekly quiz, but some do.

The quizzes are called iRAT/gRAT which I think stands for "Individual Readiness Assurance Test" and "Group Readiness Assurance Test." When you show up, you take the quiz on your own and hand it in. Then you take the same quiz with your group. Overall, the group grade is worth more than the individual grade. At the end of the module your performance on both the iRAT/gRAT is factored in to your module grade. It is meant to be a source of discussion and a way to get other people's perspective on a particular topic in order to understand it better. Frankly, I've found them very helpful.

As for readings and homework, aside from weekly histology & pathology portfolios that you are required to turn in, there isn't much homework. Each class will have a handout that goes with it informing you of the learning points you should be familiar with. There are also assigned and suggested readings that go along with it. The length of the daily readings varies depending on the day and module. It can be as few as maybe 10 pages up to more than 50 pages per night. Whether you read it or not is up to you. So long as you understand the material you will be ok.

There is also information put out after a lecture. It is usually the finalized powerpoint with answers to questions asked during the lecture. Also, on occasion, there is a soft-chalk activity or survey that you will have to fill out after a lecture.

To summarize: Every friday is dedicated to the case of the week. You will take an iRAT/gRAT related to that case in the morning, then spend the rest of the morning in small groups discussing the case and expanding on it under the direction of a physician. Usually the quizzes for the Friday case are not too difficult. Some modules have an iRAT/gRAT weekly in addition to the Friday case. I've found them to be more challenging but that's just my perspective.

Overall, I'm very happy here. I think they did a great job with the curriculum, and the current MS1 class is helping to make improvements on it. The incoming MS1 class should have a pretty solid curriculum and a great experience. Also, I should mention that they take student feedback very seriously. Changes are often made on a module-to-module basis off student feedback alone. So not only do they have a great curriculum, but they are open to your opinion as well.

I hope this has helped. To be honest it was very confusing for me (and some others I presume) when we first started. Within the 2nd or 3rd week it will be second nature.

I wish you all the best of luck no matter where you go.

Thank you so much for the reply! I really appreciate you taking time out of your busy day to do this. I am coming here in the fall and just wanted to clarify some questions that I had. Again, thank you!

No problem! A lot of your questions will be answered during orientation week. Until then, should you have any more, I'll be happy to answer them if I can.

Has anyone who has been accepted receive anything from San Antonio other than emails about buying a computer/emails from apartments in the area?

Just got accepted off the wait list! I am stoked to be coming here. Good luck to anyone else on the WL!

Has anybody who has been accepted heard anything about registration. The web page says it was supposed to start on May 1st and the orientation email thing said we would get more info late but I haven't heard anything. Anybody have any info?

Withdrew my acceptance today. OOS, so hopefully this means some WL movement for any OOSers hoping for good news.

Haven't heard about any waitlist movement. I know people that didn't get in until June/July and there have certainly been people that withdrew recently and will be heading elsewhere so I'm sure there will be acceptances to give when they decide to release them.

Just got accepted this morning! I will probably be declining but I'm not sure yet.

IS 31/3.8

did you get a phone call or an email!?

btw, congrats 🙂

Any additional info on registration? I still haven't heard anything yet. Also, is there a facebook group for UTHSCSA SOM? I couldn't find one for this year's class.

Yes there is a Facebook group. Search Uthscsa medical school class of 2017. I'd send you the link but can't figure out how to do it on my phone.

I searched that and still don't see it. I have tried multiple varieties and it never shows up. Maybe I am just a *****??

Don't worry, it's not you 🙂 I think they changed the FB group for the class of 2017 to be private so that someone already in the group has to invite you.

I can invite you if you PM your name!

Has anyone selected to live 15 min -20 min away and regretted it?

Got email from UTSA Admissions

Had heart attack

It's the confirmation that they got my application for next year

I just withdrew my OOS seat. It was definitely the most difficult academic decision I've ever made. I really loved this place.

Good luck everyone else!
