2013-2014 Harvard Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They said on the lower end of 900 or the upper part of 800 I think. I know they specifically stated that they were not interviewing as many candidates as they did last year.

...Here's to waiting until March.

The ironic part is I will be in Boston during decision week...and it's my birthday week.

Is harvard receptive to post-int updates?

Did something "wonderful" happen since you last talked to them? If so, then let them know about it. If it's not so wonderful, but instead just status quo (such as another 4.0 semester when you already have a 4.0 average) or if you just want to tell them how much you want to go to Harvard, then don't bother.

It's my birthday during decision week as well! Haha I hope they get us something nice!

Has anyone not heard anything back yet? I'm getting the sense that not everyone who is pseudo-rejected got a "no longer sending out interview invites" email.

It looks like the "no longer sending out interview invites" email only went out as a reply to those who sent in updates/LOI/misc emails to the admissions office. (Feel free to correct me on this if I'm wrong.)

Correct, they send out all decisions on the same day in march whether you've interviewed and are accepted or rejected pre interview.

my roommate got into Harvard Law in like November...this wait has been killing me...only one more month(ish)!

Question to those who interviewed:

Did you send a thank-you email to your interviewer? If so, did you get a response? I know this is neurotic thing to be thinking about, but I wonder if Harvard is a school that has a policy on whether to allow interviewers to correspond with applicants.

I did send email thank-yous to my interviewers. I did not get a response from either of them. Don't let it worry you if the same happens!

Huge relief. I didn't get a response and have been worried about it ever since I interviewed in November.

do you think those who interviewed very early in the cycle(sept/oct) will be at a disadvantage because they are not fresh in the adcom and interviewers' minds?

Doubt it. All non-rolling schools should have a fair system to make sure this doesn't happen. Besides, I'm pretty sure you will have an evaluation from your interviewers stored in your file right after the interview when the session was still fresh in the interviewers' minds, and that's what the adcom will be basing your application on. I know many people who interviewed early in the process who have been accepted (though likely it's also because they were the strongest applicants).

Anyone know if it's worth sending a post-interview LOI? I have basically no updates..interviewed back in September.

If that's the case then my advice would be don't send a letter - also at this point I don't know if it would arrive in time, so if you still want to you should check in advance.

LOI for harvard are pointless lol. so you wanna come here, eyyy?

Has anyone heard of applicants getting LOR from current students that have worked with you in a professional context? Does anyone have any insight as to whether this could hurt or help?

I personally would not do that. I think it seems a little unprofessional to have students write your recommendations and I would be worried it would do more harm than good.

Did you guys get an email asking you for your SSN?

Yes I just got one. Got a similar email from Yale a couple of days ago. I guess the AMCAS isn't supplying SSNs this year? I just logged on to the secondary app and submitted it there.

Whew, got that SSN email thought it was the notification letter.

Interviews are officially over per SSN email sent to interviewees 2/15/13.

It might also be alphabetical, I'm at the front of that list.

Yes. I thought everyone had to in order to complete the secondary.

You enter it under the "interview" tab, then "Additional information",
so it only appeared after my interview, and then I would have had to poke around a bit
so I never noticed

I really don't think this means anything. They are just checking files for completeness.

can anyone copy what exactly the email says?

Good morning.

You are receiving this message because you interviewed with HMS, but we do not have a social security number in our database for you. This is the first year in which social security numbers will not be made available to schools by AMCAS. In order for financial aid packages to be processed in a timely way once offers are made, we added a social security submission page to our on-line portal for interview candidates, but the page was easy to miss. Please go to the portal soon and submit a social security number if you have one.

https://admissions.hms.harvard.edu

Click the “Interview” tab on the top, then the “Additional Information” tab in the sidebar. You only need to submit it once. Please double-check your typing before hitting submit.

IMPORTANT NOTE: For security reasons, admissions staff members cannot confirm your submission, see your number, or take your number over the phone, by email or fax. If you are admitted, and there is an issue with your social security number, you will be contacted at that time. Once all offers have been made, the numbers of those not admitted are purged from the database.

At this point all interviews for HMS have been completed, and we are busy with many committee meetings. We plan to announce decisions during the first week of March. Thank you for coming to meet with us, and I wish you the very best of luck!

Sincerely,

Joanne M. McEvoy

Director of Admissions

Harvard Medical School

I interviewed and also didn't receive it..but that's because I provided it while playing around the site a few months ago. Same thing happened with Yale. So if you don't get an email but you already submitted your SSN, I wouldn't worry too much. That's my theory anyways

Same here. I didn't get the email either, and I had already provided my SSN.
