2013-2014 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just something to think about : I never thought about this before, but REL said in my interview that there are only a certain number of schools that can honestly say their students score in the top half of all the schools in the nation. UCF shows students the data through out the years. My very next interview after talking to med students who expressed how their class did not score as high as they would have wished, the school presented to students data that averaged the past 5 years and then said that clearly their students score very well and have been for a while. Never would have even questioned this if it wasn't for REL! - Tricky, tricky

Just received an interview invite today via phone call! I scheduled it for January 6. I'm extremely excited, as this is one of my top choices.

I'm OOS (from NY, family lives an hour from UCF), 33 MCAT, 3.59 GPA with 3.67 sGPA. I submitted my application on Oct. 16.

Congrats! When did you go EFI?

I was complete Oct. 24th but my status still shows File Complete - Ready for Review (I received the file complete email also). I'm wondering if I should email admissions or give it another week? Anyone else in a similar situation?

Me, too. Complete on 10/30. My status also still shows File Complete - Ready for Review. I'm planning on giving them more time, as I have heard that UCF is good about updating the portal.

I was complete 10/25, this morning my status changed to AORTA - ELIGIBLE FOR INTERVIEW SELECTION

Oh god please let me get an interview, haven't had any yet 🙁

I was completed 10/27 and had the same status change today. Hopefully this means good things are coming for both of us from UCF

Same status change for me this morning.

EFI is good! It means you have made it past some sort of screening I think. I'm EFI and haven't received an interview yet, but many have gotten phone calls.

The varying response times from schools is agonizing, but is expected.

Congrats! That's so great 🙂 Have you had other interviews yet?

Yep I interviewed at FIU (LOVED it) on oct 21st and interview at UF Friday! I live in Minnesota so a lot of travel. (I'm in the airport now)
How fun! Fly safe and I wish you an excellent interview!

I was also just placed into the EFI group. This is one of my top picks! Congrats to everyone!

EFI this morning also. So nice they provide that to us.

Bottom half of middle third on waiting list...interviewed 10/25

Hang in there! You can do it! Your spot on the waitlist is likely to go up.

Isn't it just peachy that we have such a nice, friendly, and straightforward admissions rep? One of the many reasons UCF is such a wonderful program.

Congrats! When did you go EFI?

Sorry for the delay, the site hasn't allowed me to post for some reason. I'm not quite sure when I went EFI, as I have not been checking my application status that frequently, and it seems I have no way of checking now. Sorry about that, but good luck!

withdrew my ii today. hope one of you gets it

I'm OOS, and so is my SO. UCF is both our top choice for med school, even more so than our state schools because of its newly-minted reputation and quality. I want to go into specialties and focus on innovative health solutions, so its refreshing to see a school that is not focused on primary care.

I was just curious if I should point this out at all, or just wait until/if we get interviews. Last cycle, we both were EFI and never came off it. We both got different feedback from the school in terms of what we need to do to become competitive, and we both met those requests (Should we mention this as well, that we took to heart their recommendations, enhanced our application as suggested?).

I would just wait on both inquiries you had. If they are your top choice, make sure to tell them in the interview. I did and it helped. That is the place for it. Also, REL is not too receptive to letters of intent.

Also, there is no need to tell them to tell them what you did to become competitive. If you did it, it will show and they will see it. 😀Just my two cents though. I am not a counselor or anything and am just trying to see it from an adcom's eyes lol.

Oops one of my friends told me to send one, so I sent and update letter a week or so ago. Just antsy since I've been EFI since late September/early October and really wanting some love from here. Hopefully I didn't inconvenience him too much. :/

I sent a pre-interview letter of interest/update while I was EFI and I got an interview shortly thereafter. I don't know if it helped or if they were going to invite me anyway, but it obviously didn't hurt. I think I got a response, actually, saying they added it to my file. Only REL really knows, but it was so long ago and there are so many applicants that he probably doesn't remember. And I'm not 100% sure he knows who I am. 🙂

I also sent in a letter of intent when I first became EFI. However, I did not receive an II shortly after but I did get an email from REL saying it would be added to my file.

Yeah, I do not think it would hurt I guess if others sent a LOI, but if you guys read last years UCF SDN forum, theres about 2 full length pages where there is a discussion of LOI and whether he should use them and REL himself stating he does not really believe in them after some experiences.

I was just basing it off of that, but perhaps he himself can answer better 🙂 Good luck!

Guess it depends on if you mean letter of interest or letter of intent. I wouldn't believe a letter of intent, esp not before the interview, but I could see a letter of interest combined with an update containing new information not on the primary or secondary applications.

I thought it was the same thing. My mistake.

An update is def good to have, but I thought that a letter of intent was the same as a letter of interest

Intent= "I'll go there if you accept me"
Interest="I like your facilities and the schools mission appeals to me. I'd totally go to an interview to learn more"

Just login to check my status... My status disappeared from the dashboard?! Is this a glitch in the system?

Edit: Nvm, it was a glitch with chrome... firefox displayed it just fine. Got me excited for nothing... lol

I just wanted to drop in again. For those that don't know, I'm an M1 at UCF and am happy to answer questions. Just message me instead of posted them here because I don't check the threads that much, but if you message me, I'll get an email about it.
A couple of people have messaged me over the past few weeks about interviews so I'm going to post what I have been telling them here.

1) Interviewers are faculty, community physicians, and M4s. Interviews are open, but blind to the GPA and MCAT. Know your application well because you will get questions about it. I think about 2/3rds of the questions are standard questions every interviewee gets and the other 1/3rd are whatever the interviewer wants to talk about. Also, all of the interviewers here are nice and do not play good cop, bad cop like at some other schools.

2) Use the interview feedback page. Even if you don't get those exact questions, they are helpful in getting you thinking about the types of questions UCF asks. http://studentdoctor.net/schools/school/ucf-com/survey/26

3) Use UW's ethics page. Every school asks ethical questions and knowing you are on the right track makes your answer come off more confident. Particularly read the discussions of the cases as that is where the bulk of the info you will want is. http://depts.washington.edu/bioethx/toc.html

4) Just be yourself and relax. Its a really fun day.

So yeah, best of luck everyone and send me a message if you have any other questions!

Just got the interview invite today via phone call! REL told me the adcom had a question about my application (kinda put me on edge) and then asked if I would like to interview 😀
It's scheduled for January 17 but might have an opening sooner!

He scared the crap outta me with that haha. You'll truly enjoy the day but when they say wear comfortable shoes they aren't kidding. At lease double the amount of walking I've done at other interviews.

I have the perfect black shoes in mind. It helps that I've been working customer service jobs since high school so I'm used to standing and walking in dress shoes.
Any additional info you could add about the interviews themselves? I know they have access to our files, but not GPA or MCAT if I'm not mistaken.

It's a very well run and enjoyable interview day. Two one on one interviews in the morning (all interviewees interview at the same time). Most of the questions are standardized, but each interviewer can ask one or two of their own questions and those will probably have to do with your application, as as you said they have access to everything except stats. You'll have lunch with students (good food, too), tours, info sessions etc.

Any other acceptees get nothing but radio silence after sending in their stuff? Kind of wondering what's next. Just the fafsa?

Got an II yesterday! The guy calling tricked me too by saying "we have a question about your application, do you want an interview" haha
