2013-2014 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got an II yesterday! The guy calling tricked me too by saying "we have a question about your application, do you want an interview" haha

Haha he did that for me too. The acceptance call was even better:

REL: hello? This is Mr. Larkin from ucf medical school admissions. With whom am I speaking?
Me: this is Captain Sisko
REL: who?
Me: Captain Sisko! Did you call the wrong number?
REL: I'm pretty sure I got the right one... doesn't sound like Captain Sisko to me, sounds more like DOCTOR Sisko!
Me: !!!!

Hahaha love REL's sense of humor, he did the same thing to me!

It's a very well run and enjoyable interview day. Two one on one interviews in the morning (all interviewees interview at the same time). Most of the questions are standardized, but each interviewer can ask one or two of their own questions and those will probably have to do with your application, as as you said they have access to everything except stats. You'll have lunch with students (good food, too), tours, info sessions etc.

Nice, I'm looking forward to getting the interviews out of the way early on and enjoying the rest of the day at the school with the students and faculty.

Any other acceptees get nothing but radio silence after sending in their stuff? Kind of wondering what's next. Just the fafsa?

Nothing back yet, so I guess it is time to lay back and enjoy. This part is quite difficult lol I am ready to go!

But I decided to get a jump start on my vaccines as Hep B has a 7 month period to get fully vaccinated, so I am starting that now.

Also FAFSA in January right? I remember the financial counselor saying something about January and then writing UCF undergrad as the recieving institution (bc the med school is not on there).

Also REL, any chance of a FB group for the class of 2018? It might be too early, but I was considering looking into housing and a FB group would help me find a roommate 🙂

+1 on the FB group!

Interviewing here on Friday and so excited!! 🙂 anyone else going to be there?

Just got EFI today after being complete on 11/21. Interviewed here last year, ended up too far down on the wait list, wasn't going to apply for another year or two, but then thought "Well, why not...". Much better metrics, grant funding, and clinical volunteer work this time. We'll see!

Radio silence is the answer for now. During this phase you have sent back your response form telling us to hold your seat and this we will do until the end of time unless you tell us otherwise. So from this point you are flying this thing......in your U2, way above the clouds, gliding along in the sunshine with no worries. You can stay up there for hours....contact ground control when needed. I know that ground control will be contacting you in many ways when it is time to land.....the coolest part is that we will be in those two el camino's racing up the runway as you land to place the wheels under the wings so that you dont snag something and spin out. So for now, glide, do loopty-loos, and play tag with the clouds......until we get into the new year..........

Interviewing on 1/10!

has anyone heard anything about the Homestay program, positive or negative, for spending the night before the interview with a current student?

Congrats on the interview! Current M1 at UCF (great school!), and I highly recommend the homestay program. I was hosted for my interview a year ago, and I am now a host. There is almost always a group of students and interviewees that get together for dinner the night before the interview, which is a great opportunity to learn more about UCF without the pressure of interview day. Some hosts offer to give you a tour of the school the night before, which can help you feel more comfortable during the interview, and every host will give you the lowdown on what an awesome school we go to...So, in short, request a homestay!

My friend got the acceptance call earlier. I'm jealous, but praying I'm near the top of the list!

Oh REL!! What I would give for a phone call from you!!
He's incorruptable. Untouchable. With the fancy hat from the roaring 20's. I tried to bribe him for extra panera at the interview, but no dice. I swear in his past life he was Elliot Ness.

Got the call. Top half of the top third. Super stoked. That's as good as an acceptance. I can't believe it's finally my turn.

I interviewed here on Friday (12/6) and can't say enough about how amazing this school is! If you have interviewed at other schools you'll quickly realize UCF isn't like any of the others. Such a stress free enjoyable day and everyone was extremely nice, honest and helpful, especially the admissions staff. They genuinely want you to choose the school you feel is the best fit for you. My mind was constantly being blown at every turn between the state of the art facilities, lengths they go to ensure their students do well, extremely honest answers and vision they have for their school and eventually the medical city surrounding them. Fingers crossed they liked me as much as I liked them! I could definitely see myself spending the next four years at UCF 🙂

And they have study treadmills. If you're a fitness nut/love being able to walk and study like me you'll love it!

Personally i was fond of the showering facilities in case I ran or biked to school, or if i wanted to go for a run at lunch.

Right?! I thought that was so unique, I love that the Dean designed the building to encourage fitness and the surrounding area would be beautiful for a run! Not to mention, they have Puppy Play Days to help lower the stress level before big tests which is the only school I have ever heard of doing this and beyond awesome! 🙂

UCF football made it into one of the best catches on ESPN College FB! One handed catch in the end zone.

Just loving this place more and more

Knighted!

Puppy Play Days...amazing facilities...beautiful campus...friendly and transparent admissions office...this place is like the garden of Eden in the med school world

REL, should not-yet-admitted folks expect an update this week?

Been AORTA/EFI for a few months... do you think it's a bad sign I haven't gotten an II?

Have any of you guys stayed in hotels in the area? any recommendations? I know that school gives us recommended list of places to stay, but I wondered if I could get some students to pitch in on this. Thank you so much in advance!

I recommend you stay with a student host.

REL,

I'd like to ask, now that fall grades are out...other than doing well on fall grades, is there anything else that can said to help improve odds of getting that interview call? I've stated in several places on the app that UCF is my first choice already and am just really hoping to advance beyond EFI pool.

I understand if the answer amounts to, "cross your fingers and pray" but I figure it can't hurt to ask...thanks for any advice you might have, sir

I felt the same way! I believed I referred to it as the candy land of medical schools haha 🙂

Sounds like you are doing all that you can. Email your grades so that they can be cut-pasted (BIOL101, Basic Biology, 3hr, A+) to our AMCAS, and attach screen shot of term grade sheet for verification if possible.

There is a group constantly sifting thru updates and those EFI. Enjoy the Christmas season and pray that something good comes about for you. We will continue the interview selection through ~mid February for our final early March interview date.

I've now sent in the information you requested. Thanks for the guidance. (I'll return to crossed fingers and prayers now). Hope to hear from you

II today, complete on 11-19-13 (was waiting on some letters...). Anyone going to be there on Jan 17, 2014?

Also, for those of you that may already have acceptances and have your heart set on somewhere other than UCF, if you get an II from UCF, you need to go. You might change your mind. They have wonderful new facilities - you will work on your cadavers while looking out through a glass wall over a landscape, have a courtyard or "quad" on site to destress, and be equipped ergonomically to study while exercising, just to name a few unique features. Check it out if you get the chance.

Completely agree. UCF's facilities are just top notch and that alone must warrant a look if given the opportunity. Have a safe and relaxing holidays everyone!

App complete mid-July (EFI). Nothing since. Keeping my fingers crossed. Love this school. Got to keep the faith!

Hi @REL,

In in another tread another adcom member said that the deadline for holding multiple acceptances has been moved from May 15 to April 30 by the AAMC. She said it's been announced to admission officers but I can't find any official announcement to students. Is this true? If so, how do you think it will effect the cycle this year?

Thanks!

All ADCOMs received an email providing the new traffic rules. The new TR's go into effect for the new 2015 application year (2014-2015). The other ADCOM mis-read the email which is easy to do. Following is quoted from the AAMC email: "...The new traffic rules, which will go into effect with the 2015 AMCAS Application cycle (which will open in Late spring of 2014), can be found..."

Thank you for the clarification! And for being so great about answering questions in general.

My philosophy is that the more an applicant knows the better off we all are. With that thought I am happy to provide whatever I can to break through the smoke, mirrors, mis-information, and other stumbling blocks that are placed in your path.
