2013-2014 University of Chicago (Pritzker) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It'd have been helpful to know how many people get this status. 😕 Like, they interview ~600 out of ~5200 applicants, so about 12%. If I knew what rough %ile range I stood in, it'd be so much more comforting ..

I'm sure you saw this earlier post, but I don't think it hurts to bring it up again 😎

Also, to address the continued status that will inevitably come up: I would describe this as a "we like you, but not enough to grant an interview yet." It definitely is NOT a rejection in disguise, and you're absolutely still in the running. I think something like 10-20% of interview invites are given to people that are continued at some point, and a not insignificant number of acceptances go to people that were continued during the pre- and/or post interview phases. If you happen to get this status, don't be too discouraged.

If I'm still at the "complete" status and my application was complete on 7/8, is this a good sign, bad sign, or is my reviewer just on vacation? Pritzker is a huge reach for me so I'm expecting a big fat R but having not heard back is instilling some hope in me - so I'm just wondering if it's justified hope 😛

Agreed

Does the "Complete" status ever change to "Under Review," or are they synonymous? I've been complete since 7/8 and am a bit worried about not hearing anything at all.

Thanks in advance!

To be honest the status system can be kind of wonky with respect to all of the intermediate statuses, so I wouldn't put much stock in threm beyond the complete, "held for later review," and rejected statuses.

@Soulstice: That's what is essentially the continued status. Unfortunately I knew the numbers at one point but I don't know them now. You do have a chance, so my advice would be to send in an update in a couple of months if you still haven't heard back. You can get invited at any time, but based on my experience activity for the continued folks seems to pick up more around November or December. That's just a general rule, though, and is by no means absolute.

Also, see my post above (which was also quoted by jeg).

I'm also in application complete limbo after being complete on 7/8. I wouldn't put much stake into it meaning much. From last years thread, some of the people that had longer response times were rejected, while others were accepted. Just keep holding on!

Also complete the 8th...

Maybe we all got stuck with one of the slower reviewers!

Maybe blessed instead of stuck. Who knows, it could be dr so and so looks for the best in everyone's app and is looking for excuses to bring us in for interviews!

Who else is coming on the 29th of August? I read great things about the student host program and I think I will try to use it, can any past applicants who utilized it chime in? Sorry if this was covered before but couldn't find anything.

Congrats on the II. I'll be there on the 29th! 🙂

What specifically would you like to know?

How was the experience like? Are the student hosts usually friendly? How far away from the school do they usually live (so one can get to the interview the next morning)?

1) It's hard to generalize as it'll vary depending upon who the host is and the timing of your visit (ie, near a test day). In general, though, your host will spend some time with you if he/she isn't studying to talk about the school and answer any questions you might have. I would also provide my hostee with dinner if he got in at a reasonable hour. In short, it's a great way to meet a student (or students), have someone to hang out with for the evening, and get some insight into the school from an actual student.

2) Yes, we usually don't bite. 😉 Hosts volunteer, so your host actually wants to host someone. Unfortunately a host might seem less friendly if you visit around test time, but that's simply because they've got s lot on their plate and are stressed. But they won't be rude to you - they just may not be able to spend as much time with you as they otherwise might.

3) Again varies, but most people live in Hyde Park, and you can likely catch a bus/ride with your host to the school in the morning. Some students live downtown, and for them I'm guessing you would again just catch a ride with them to campus.

Abt the on hold status - Too early for a follow-up letter now? This is my top-choice school, and I'm wondering if it'd be appropriate to get that on the record early enough on.

I would say it's a little early, but that's not based on anything substantive. It's your app cycle, so you should do what you think is best. In general though I recommend that applicants wait a month or two before sending in an update as your status might change before then and that'll give you more time to provide a more substantial update.

I was also complete on 7/8 and have heard nothing. Maybe they forgot all about the 7/8 applications!

Same but I'm assuming it'll happen soon.

I'm sure they've observed the backlog from the particular reviewer(s) and are either encouraging them to move, or are redistributing our files.

Has anyone called and asked?

I'm not going to until five weeks after my complete date. They said it could take between two and four, so I'll give them that extra time. Don't poke the bear when he hasn't stolen your lunch.

I agree but it's just weird that all the 7/8ers are being held on standby. You'd think maybe something happened 😕 but of course, all of this is a waiting game.

Yeah it's odd, but I hesitate to call schools about stuff I've heard on sdn which includes us "7/8'ers"

Think of it this way. Imagine someone over there doesn't know what it is. Then imagine the phone conversation. "so a bunch of people you don't know except in an internet forum haven't heard from us after a little over a week even though we told you it would be at least two? Yeahhhh... "

Obviously if I call that's not what I would say. More of a "I know Pritzker is well known for reviewing applicants quickly and my app has been complete since the 8th but hasn't been reviewed whereas others submitted later have, do you know if there was an error with some apps or how long I should expect to wait?" Something like that, I can't believe that you would expect me to call and ask about the 7/8 sdners, you must not think too highly of me 😳

You guys are being silly. Call if you want. Don't if you don't. Send an email to Dr. Todd (his email was provided earlier). I don't think you'll get much useful info, but if it'll make you feel better than by all means go ahead. No one is going to hold it against you.

Something to keep on mind, though, is that it hasn't even been two weeks since you submitted your app. I understand the anxiety - really, I do - but just try to be as patient as you can. Worrying will just stress you out, which is exactly what shouldn't happen!

Haha sorry, far from it! Didn't mean it that way 🙂

Yeah I'm sure we seem ridiculous from the outside, but with Pritzker as a top choice I'm just really nervous about my chances! Hopefully we'll hear back something soon

Haha, understandable, just don't get yourself worked up into too much of a frenzy!

I am falling in love with this school. The more I learn about the more it seems so perfect. The students seem so nice and friendly and so many amazing opportunities. My face hurts from smiling at their website haha. Please accept me pritzker! (or gimme an interview and we'll have a good chat haha).

Really sucks being a 7/8er....has anyone called to ask whats up by chance?

Official update from the office about you "lost ones." It's strictly coincidence that so many of you that were complete on 7/8 are experiencing "delays." Several applicants that were complete on 7/8 have received decisions. However, some (many) applicants receive a thorough review by the committee in addition to the reviews all applicants receive. It would seem that, by chance, a large lot of you are undergoing this "deeper look" prior to receiving a decision. This is why it has taken a bit of time to get a final decision.

Have no fear! No calamities have occurred! And, as always, relaxation and patience are key. 🙂

You're seriously so awesome, thanks for looking out for us!

If even a small percent of the student body are like you, i'm sure that Pritzker is where I want to be.

+1 times a thousand

Rejected here tambien, at least I can feel better about it taking 2 weeks versus 2 days last year 🙂

Whelp, rejected. It was a long shot anyways. Good luck to everyone!

😱 I guess I should be glad my file isn't complete yet. Best of luck to everyone who just heard back -- the season's just begun and y'all are going to have great cycles!! :luck:

this was a long shot for me as well so its not like I didn't see it coming...

Good luck to everyone else!!!

Rejected

Saw that one coming from a mile away, but it still stung a little.

Can anyone who is familiar with Pritzker explain the "held for later review" option? Will they only look at it again after all other apps have been submitted?

See previous in thread - I had this a few days ago.
