2013-2014 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good to have some company. Best of luck to you and let's hope we can find some distractions until March...
You as well! I am trying to stay busy working and doing other things. I am convinced that this whole process consists of speculating and turning applicants into medical school admissions conspiracy theorists haha. It's enough to drive a person crazy!

For those of you that have had RD interviews, how long after your file was complete did you receive the II?

I applied EDP, but received only a RD interview. So my file was complete in July, but I didn't receive the II until mid-September

Hey guys, so I got verified on 10/22 but yet to receive a secondary from Kansas. I know their deadline is November 15, so naturally I am getting pretty worried. Is anyone else on the same boat?

It's been just over two weeks... I wouldn't be too worried. Are you IS? Decent stats?

Just a little worried about the Nov 15 deadline. But I am actually OOS and a little below the average for this school.

I know someone else already offered some direction on this, but in the past, the KUMC website explicitly stated that Kansas residents with a 3.2 GPA and a 24 MCAT were guaranteed an interview. FWIW, I don't know if this has changed, and it isn't on their website any longer, but it was the case for those entering in 2013. That said, MSAR posts matriculant data showing much higher scores for the mean; going to show you that an interview--even for in-state--does not even come close to guaranteeing a spot in the program for those who have those minimum numbers.
Is this really true?

I (think) almost everyone gets a secondary?

Also, does anyone know anything about the post-bac program at KU?

The most important detail for me was that the program is specifically for URM's, so I didn't qualify.

So I don't understand...can I qualify for URM through KU med if I am from and live in rural Kansas?

Being in a rural area does not make you URM--it has to do with underrepresented racial minorities.

Depending on your situation, you may qualify for the rural scholars program though.

Hmm.. I know a white female that was invited to apply.

I'm currently in the post-bac program. Let me know if you have questions

I have a friend in rural Kansas who is a white male who is in the post bac. All you have to do is maintain a good gap and get a 24. Sweet deal.

So you need a 24 to get in to the program?

I don't think that there is a MCAT cutoff. To apply to the program, you have to apply to the med school. If you are waitlisted or rejected, they may invite you to apply to the program. You take classes at KU's Edwards Campus (in Overland Park) and as long you maintain a GPA of 3.0 (1 class in the summer, then 12 credits in both the fall and spring) you're golden. Then, the summer before you start med school you have to do the Pre-Matriculation program which is kind of like a preview of your M1 year. During the one year that you're in the program, you also get a stipend each semester. It's a great program

Ok that sounds great. I'm not URM so I doubt I would be invited though!

How do they decide who they want for such a small program? Being from rural Kansas, do I automatically have a decent chance with a 3.5 GPA?

I understood it as a program for people that are great potential candidates, they just need some refresher courses in chem and bio. How did you do on your MCAT? I think typically those with lower MCAT scores are selected for the program. That's just what a friend told me.

@jayhawker1193: They do take your GPA & MCAT into account but I get the sense that a lot of the selection criteria is based on your interview as well as your short answer essays in your KU secondary. In addition, there is another short personal statement that you submit when you apply for the post bac program.

@kansas16: there are a couple people in the program now who are not URM but they do both come from fairly rural areas. To your second question, I think that you're right that they liked us in our interviews but ultimately felt that we had some (most likely academic or MCAT) weakness in our application that needed to be addressed. Some people in the program had good GPA's but a lower MCAT. I was kind of the opposite in that I did well on the MCAT but my undergrad GPA was frankly pretty bad. I am several years removed from undergrad and have done well in classes since but I think they wanted to make sure that at this point in my life, my MCAT was a better indicator of my academic ability than my college grades.

If you do interview and are waitlisted or rejected, it would be worth reaching out to someone in the OCED office. I can PM you contact details. Let me know if you have any other questions

Would you mind sharing your MCAT and GPA/sGPA for a reference?

@DavDLC pretty much summed up Post-Bacc. I'm also in the program. It's a great opportunity. One thing I'd like to point out is that to my knowledge you don't necessarily have to have a lower MCAT or GPA to be considered. I think it mainly has to do with being URM or from a rural community. I'm pretty sure you could have decent stats, and just didn't make the cut during regular acceptance or got wait listed, and you would probably still be invited to apply for Post-Bacc. My point is don't count out any opportunity until you've spoken with someone at KU about it. You won't know if you don't ask.

Good luck to everyone!

Any ideas about if KU extends interview invites strictly in the order applications were completed? Or do they sort it based on stats or anything else at all?

I think it's just in the order the applications are verified.

I don't know if I stand much of a chance! 3.9 sci GPA, 23 MCAT... 2 years ICU nursing experience... Dual sport athlete in college. Hoping for the best.

Obviously your MCAT is a weak point. Do you have a plan-B in case you don't get accepted this round? I had to reapply, and having a plan-B saved my bacon, even though it was the last thing I wanted to do.

Good luck, I hope you don't need my advice 😀

I do, I'll continue working as a RN and reapply next year. Interviewed today so we'll just see how things go!

I had a quick questions guys. So I submitted my secondary on November 13, and their deadline was November 15. However, it says my file wasn't complete until November 21. Am I automatically out?

Just speculating, but I'd imagine if your secondary and letters were in by the 15th, the committee taking a few days to go in and mark you officially complete shouldn't be a problem!

Can anybody comment on whether or not KU - Wichita has mandatory attendance for lectures? Do they have recorded lectures? Thanks!

Attendance is NOT mandatory, and all the lectures are recorded. In fact most of the lectures are live feeds of the Kansas City lectures.

Hey guys. I am an OOS with very strong ties to KS. I know that they won't start considering OOS until January, but will they be sending interview offers in December or do I have to wait till January?

I'm an instate guy, but I seem to remember the 2nd app saying they would contact applicants 2 weeks before their interview date and that's when they emailed me. KU was different then the other schools I applied to in that they told me when I was scheduled to interview, while the other schools gave me a list of dates to choose from. It might be different for you since your OOS and I interviewed in Wichita.

I was on there sight looking for something else and came across this:
Because of the large number of nonresident files to review and the relatively few interview positions available to nonresidents, those interview invitations are not extended until January, usually for late January or February interview dates.

What day does the committee meet? Do they release their decision the same day?

I saw something about Tuesday meetings but I can't find it now. Anyone know?
Thanks

I remember reading / being told it's Tuesdays too, though I don't have any evidence to offer for it.

I'm also curious when they release their decisions. Late October interviews were told decisions would be out sometime this week.

Dean McCurdy told us they meet Tuesday nights as a committee to review your application and assign the numerical scores. I interviewed around October 11 and then my letter was dated October 25. She said it can take 2-3 Tuesdays to review each round of applicants before sending out the letters. Good luck!

Do prospective students get an option to pick an interview date when grated one? Or do they just give us one?

Nope, no options. They just give us a date.

Nothing in the mail today!
