2013-2014 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I've been watching the KU class of 2018 facebook group grow, and it has only gained about 20 members since the EDP applicants were accepted. Either accepted people haven't joined the group yet, or the applicants on "hold" still have a good reason for hope.
Yeah I figured it'd be some kind of party by now. Nope.

Merry Christmas! I interviewed on Dec. 2nd and I remember Ms. Sandy McCurdy saying to expect a letter, if your committee score is above a certain threshold, the week of Dec. 23rd.

I was wondering if anyone has received anything this week??

I interviewed the 5th of December and haven't received any mail from KU.

I interviewed on Dec 3 and still have not received a letter. Hopefully it will come next week!

Hey. I interviewed on Dec 3rd and still haven't heard anything. Are you sure that they said that they only send out letters to people who are above that threshold? Don't they send letters to everyone about the decision?

I remember her saying they send letters to everyone, whether that is accepted, wait listed, or declined. I thought she said these would be sent out the 20th of December. Guess not.

Great attitude to have for a future doctor man. At least you weren't straight up rejected like some people were. Chin up.

Well I guess one would only understand my frustration if they knew my story. But seriously sweety.... Please enlighten me on how a "doctor's attitude" should be! :eyebrow:

I don't need to. Best of luck.

Happy New Year everyone!

Do you mind sharing when you interviewed? I still haven't received a letter...interviewed on Dec. 3...
If you call the admissions office, they can tell you when the letter for your group was mailed. I interviewed on December 2nd and Mr. Edwards said they were mailed on December 30th. I'm assuming yours should be coming soon if not in your mailbox already 🙂

Got the "on hold" letter today. interview dec 3rd. letter was dated dec 29th

When are you heading in?

You too! Remember, don't let them push. Redirect and talk about your passion, own your history, and maintain focus.

Do non-trads count as minorities for the post bacc program? Anyone on here have any idea?

No -- You must come from an underserved community (e.g. rural) or be a minority (e.g. female, latino/african american or a combination of those).

I tried every which way to wiggle my way into post-bacc last year after getting a rejection, but all I had in my favor was being a non-trad. Hope that helps.

Glad I'm not a "real"minority. XD

Can you believe there are only 3 more weeks of interviews including the interviews this week? Time sure does fly.

Man that was nerve wracking.

Do interviews end in three weeks, or are there just 3 week-long interviewing rounds left?

Best of luck to those who are still waiting to hear!

For those waiting for a II, there is still a little time left. Last year I got the invitation 1/23 for what I believe was the last interview on 2/7. So keep that hope alive 🙂

What are the chances of acceptance if you get an ii?

What are the chances of acceptance if you get an ii?
For OOS SLIM! According to MRAS 102 are interview, and only 30 are accepted, which 5 of those are MD/PhD.

IS applicants have a much greater chance. Out of 368 interviews, 181 got in.

Hope this helps. ;-)

Does anybody know if KU accepts updates or letters of interest? As an OOS I haven't heard anything from them yet. The chances of an interview seem slim at this point, but I'm trying to stay hopeful!

Yes, they do.

what about if you've already had your interview?

Jason told me until your file is final you can always update it, and they prefer it that way.

There are 3 week-long interviewing rounds left. There was one this week, one at the end of January and one in February.

I'm a Non trad under rep minority and economically disadvantaged student. GPa is ok for being in resident but MCAT was poor and dean McCurdy was pretty honest not to expect and interview but said that without viewing my application she couldn't say for sure. Felt it was worth the cost of the Amcas fee to apply anyhow as I have many years of medical experience and have raised 3 kids on my own with one having severe special needs. They have been more than generous extending deadlines to get all my letters and Amcas app in. I was told I am eligible for post bacc and that would be my best shot at even getting an interview.
So, my question is- how long after I submitted everything Should I wait for an outright rejection or an interview? Application is being reviewed by dean McCurdy now but she told me even if she passes it on, the committee may decide not to interview me. I don't have false hopes here because my mcats were just below a 24, but considering that my son was hospitialized during most of 2013 out of state I didn't get much time to study and ran out of time in biology which affected my score. Regardless- I did crummy and there's not much to fix that now and making excuses won't reassure them I can cut it in med school. Despite my overwhelming personal obligations with my sons illnesses, I have managed to maintain over a 3.4 GPA at Kstate and done some research, volunteered and have extensive clinical background as well as executive medical background. Hoping this helps my chances to get an interview just so I can be considered for post bacc as the coordinator for that program really encouraged me to pursue it and helped me with my personal statement.
Bottom line- anyone with less than desirable Mcats but decent GPA and adverse background get an interview just to get invited to apply for post bacc or did you get an outright rejection? If you get outright rejection, without an interview invitation, how long do you wait until you receive notification?
Thanks for any info!!
