2013-2014 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
10:10 Tuesday that will, according to twitter, be "surprisingly busy"! #thereisalwayshope

Question for the adcoms/UM students watching this thread, about this twitter post:

@UMichMedAdmiss: On a less positive note, we're preparing to close several hundred more files this week. #Wishwecouldtakeeverybody!

Does that mean we will see a status change on our app page if our file is closed?

Thank you for your question, this is one we get a lot. Yes, if there is any change to your application you will receive an update, including a file closing.

were these interviews instate or out of state or both? did any sdn'er get an interview?

So if after this week our file is still "Under Review" is it safe to say that that should be viewed as "good news"?

Great, thanks for clarifying!

Has anyone had their file closed today? How about II? I'm kind of freaking out now since I didn't get an II at 10:10 :/

Based on the admissions tracker as of last Friday, there are some 50 out-of-state interview offers (excluding today) that they haven't given out yet, as well as 63 in-state interview offers that weren't offered yet.

this makes me wonder what a "busy" interview day means :/

Has anyone had a file closed at ALL? I mean, I know that I tend to stop following school-specific threads after a rejection, ... but it seems odd to not have heard a single person report a closed file.

Means people know that Michigan stalks student doctor and don't want to give themselves away. Or it's just that they've invited people who don't normally post here.

haha or michigan just want to stress us out 😉 i just want to know how many interviews they sent out lol like 5? 10? 20? 30? i mean the total left is 113 🙁
I wonder if there is any way they can know who we are 😛

question for UMMS2017...

do you know if it's possible to send updates post-acceptance to help with consideration for scholarships?

Depends on how careful you are. For people like me who share a lot, they could probably find me in a minute (not that they care). I have no problem with that, though. I wouldn't share or say things if I thought it would realistically affect my chances in any way.

Theoretically, if you have an MDApps with accurate biographical information and post what day you're invited to interview, anyone working in Admissions could figure out who you are, but the med students on here only know what day people interview and when they're accepted. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Director Ruiz only looks at this site about once every few weeks to a month, and would never meticulously sit with SDN and the application database open side by side to try to identify every single user (it's a pointless exercise in internet stalking...)--he mostly wants to make sure false info isn't propagated. If you post inappropriate comments and already received an interview invite or acceptance, that could prompt more investigation and could potentially have an adverse effect, but if you're friendly and nice and ask good questions on the forum you shouldn't be worried about maintaining anonymity or anything.

I think I recall reading on the Twitter that one of the accepted students is already a likely full scholarship recipient, so they start "ranking" (not literally, but you know what I mean--more like flagging) the accepted students pretty early on (after each AEC meeting) and have an idea of those they really want to strongly recruit come spring. That said, they will review all 300-some of the accepted student files at a big AEC meeting in March devoted to scholarship awards, so an update will theoretically be viewed with your file. I would say to go for it. You'll get an email in a few months (early March) entitled "Coming Soon: Michigan Scholarship Announcements" from Director Ruiz, prior to said big AEC meeting, so if you want to "accumulate" updates and send one big letter, your file won't be reviewed again until that time, but definitely send your updates via status page shortly after that email comes out. This past year, first-round awards were announced on March 29, and those who declined and chose to attend elsewhere had scholarships recycled to more people in late April & early May following another smaller AEC meeting.

Thank you! Your answers are very much appreciated.

Time to settle in for the loooong wait....

No status changes until today... just a long "File complete - under review"

Congrats! That's amazing! I definitely know the feeling of losing hope :/ Do you mind sharing IS or OOS and stats? Just want to see what they're up to over there in admissions 😀

+1
Thanks for taking the time to be so helpful and calm all of us frantic applicants down 🙂

Of course! I don't think UMMS had an SDN presence while I applied last year, and I found it pretty helpful to have a med student "insider" on some of the other forums, which hopefully is still continuing (I haven't looked at any other schools' forums since April...)
To add onto my comment earlier, if you were an admissions officer and hypothetically had to release bad news to hundreds of people, doing it Friday afternoon at 5:01pm would result in fewer calls to the office 😛 (hence the educated guess). I believe all my college decisions during 12th grade were also released shortly after 5pm...
PS- If you haven't seen the movie Admission with Tina Fey, highly recommended, especially the decision day scene with all the phone calls

I saw that movie! The level of scrutiny our lives are under throughout this process hit me when in the film, the adcom made the decision and the rejected applicants fell through the floor, screaming. That's exactly what receiving a rejection feels like!! But yeah, I bet the phone rings non-stop--madness!!

Thanks for the response! I'll go ahead and send one before the meeting then. It's not like it can hurt 🙂

Hey there! M2 admissions committee member here! I can second the notion of recycled "unused" scholarships. I did not receive a scholarship during the first wave , but was offered one later (June?) when applicants chose to take their talents elsewhere. So if you are set on Michigan, don't lose all hope. A scholarship may come your way.

I thought today was a good day :/ I think I have finally lost hope in this school 🙁

Are we all just speculating that files will be closed, or is there some kind of confirmation?

Expecting a rejection here today. This process is so random and unpredictable. Many times an application did not get full evaluation because of one "weakness/mismatch" spotted by one particular reviewer. It is understandable because so many qualified people are in the pool and you really need some luck to be selected.

It is just hard to believe that they are evaluating all 4000 applications equally. I wish they would look at applications as they are submitted rather than grouping and regrouping applications. It is kinda crazy how some people have been under review for 4 months, but then others submitted a month before being accepted. Sorry I didnt get a 45 on my MCAT, but I think with all the recent crazy doctors that have been popping up on CNN, the process that is SO GREAT, may not be that GREAT after all. Those with the average or above average stats are just as great as those with superb stats.

Yeah, that one unforgivable on my part was my "subpar" cgpa of ~3.6. My 38 mcat couldn't rescue it, nor could my pubs or extensive research or cool ec's. But I'm not feeling sorry for myself- I'm feeling sorry for them for missing their chance with me.

🙂 yep we'll do great!

File closing party tomorrow anyone?

Party, there are filing closing parties?? I've missed about 4 of them already. Must attend this one!!
Go Green, Go White, but forever, GO BLUE!!

Accepted at MSU, have U of M undergrad, so now my loyalties will be divided.

I like the attitude!

Did anyone else get a text message from Michigan this morning asking for your name and interview date?

Any idea how many or what percentage of files have been closed so far?
Not sure. I know their Twitter account has mentioned closing files a couple of times (e.g., "Several hundred more" most recently)... But exactly the extent? 200? 500? 1000? No idea.

Edit: Wait, yes, idea. They mentioned a while back that it was ~1k files. So, by this point, maybe 1,300 - 1,500 files are closed.

If they've only closed a couple thousand so far, then we have an even lower chance than if there were only, say, 500-1000 files still left open. I can't wait till I can stop over-analyzing!
