2013-2014 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Am I the only one amazed by the similarities between Michigan and Ohio State (their medical schools at least)? For all their rivalry, they seem to share a very similar philosophy when it comes to picking their classes. I know there are obviously very different curricula once you are there, but still...the ghost of Marilee Jones lives on.

Or maybe all public schools with decent funding aspire to be Michigan? (Though I guess UCSF is doing okay.) I know for a fact that the new Provost representing our local (public) medical school specifically said behind closed doors that "Michigan is a model" for what they wanted to do with their school. I think it's a great goal, sort of like how my 4-year-old nephew wants to be an astronaut.

Complete 7/9.

Complete 9/16. Just got put on hold yesterday.

I have a feeling they just put me on-hold as a courtesy since I went here for UG and now go here for grad school.. but you never know.

Did really well on the MCAT, but lowish GPA due to hard engineering major, which no schools can seem to see past. Oh well, here's hoping that there's good news in the future.

I have a friend who was put on hold last year around this time and ended up getting an interview in February... now goes to UM med school, so be positive everyone!

Dear UM Admissions (aka UMICH-MED twitter that's stalking SDN),

I would like to make a suggestion: Many applicants yesterday were put "on hold-screening complete" (including myself..), meaning that you like them but probably don't like them "enough" to offer them an interview. Instead of rejecting them later in the cycle, why don't you do things differently this year and take advantage of those "on hold" applicants? You could add couple interview dates sometime in February/March to invite those who were put on hold and use them for testing purposes to try out some MMIs! You've been considering integrating MMIs into your interview process for some years now. It would be a perfect way to give that a try and figure out the best way to do it before you actually apply it. This would be a mutual benefit: 1) You get to test the process and 2) the "on hold" applicants get the chance to interview and possibly have a chance to be accepted.

Sorry, when you say "alot of applicants", all I can think of is this...

Disclaimer: I'm not trying to be TOO much of an ass, since I think your comment has some merit. 😉 However, I feel like UM probably has an effective system for interviews and that the benefits of interviewing even 1,000+ applicants would not be worth the substantial time/capital expense.

hahaha changed to "many" 😀
And about the comment, everything is possible with michigan! 😉 I sure hope it's not 1000+ applicants, but maybe 100-200?

Love the idea but highly doubt it. Nice try though! 👍

I also think the hold is a type of pre-rejection, so I'm not sure it's necessarily a sign of any more preference than a rejection.

There are applicants with this status each year who are still invited to interview at UMMS. Definitely not a "pre-rejection," though many will end up not being offered an interview given that most invites have already been sent out (i.e. ~50-75 interview slots left and probably hundreds with the "hold" status)

Has anyone with the "Application Screening Complete" status ever received an interview before? I'm not holding out any hope, but I'd just like to know about the possibility.

I think the "on hold-application complete" status is different from the "application screening completed" status, though.

I have the following:

"Your application has been reviewed. At this point we are not able to offer you an interview. Your file remains "open" and eligible for additional reviews. Final decisions for all candidates will be made the first week in February. Thank you for your patience."

If anyone has a different status, that's possibly room for optimism. However, as of now, I haven't heard or seen evidence of that.

Honestly - the easiest thing is to wait on it. Maybe send an update, but otherwise there isn't much you can do so there's not much of a point to monitoring it that closely.

Oh, ok. I thought the "on-hold" everyone was referring to actually had the words "on-hold" in the status message. Never mind, then.

Good luck to everyone hearing back today!! (November interviewees)

Thanks! 🙂 Though I'm pretty sure we don't hear until the 15th and they specifically said that they are happy to work on a Sunday for us (or more for the sake of keeping up thier 15th tradition).

On Twitter they said decisions were coming out today at 5pm eastern for those originally waiting to hear back on the 15th. 🙂 But maybe they were joking since today is Friday the 13th?

Dang, I think I'm having legit panic attack right this second :barf:

Here's the post!

"@UMichMedAdmiss: MD candidates who interviewed in November expecting decisions on 12/15 will now get updates today/5 Eastern. #GoBlueMed"

Has anyone from the MSTP heard back?
Not here. They told us we would here our status (accepted, hold, rejected) about a month from the interview date. The one month mark is coming up for me, so I'm starting to get nervous. When did you interview?

I interviewed 11/15, you?

Tracker updated. Looks like they're interviewing 50 more people this year. There are 40 IS and 13 OOS interview invites left.

So for people who have the "Your file remains open but we can't invite you now" status. Is this a game over status?
Based on what previous posts have said, it does seem like some people have received interview invites after getting this status. So it doesn't seem like it's necessarily game over.

Yeah, I wouldn't say it's "game over" yet, but with 40/13 invites left... it's certainly getting close to that line. Considering that they've probably reviewed most applicants' files, I expect at least some of those invites will go to us with "open" statuses?

totally agree. I'm positive that some of us with "open" statuses will hear something..

Has anyone received a "hold" or II recently who was complete the end of September?

It's not a "game over" or a "nice rejection" or anything like that. The committee posts statuses such as this to inform you that your application has been reviewed, and although there is no interview offer now your application will be reviewed again later on and the potential for an offer still remains. People have gotten interviews after receiving this status, and yes people who are still "under review" are also still being considered.

Can you give us an idea of how many applications are still under review versus how many interview spots still remain?
