2013-2014 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They sent out ii's last night. Next batch of acceptances will be released 11/15

They've tweeted twice in the past 24 hours saying not to trust random stats on SDN. lol

Haha, I know. The tweets are awesome, but it's also a little bit of information overload sometimes. It's freaking me out about 11/15 :scared:

Has anyone received a recent interview invite after having a complete status since July/August?

haha i'm really looking for some hope for earlier applicants 🙂
i haven't had any status change since august. I know some people have changed to an "on hold" status. My application is still complete-under review for more than a couple month now. im hoping someone has received an interview after waiting for a long time with a "complete" status just to give us some hope 🙁

Is there really a changed status for "on hold"? I don't think I've seen anyone mention having that... I have also been "under review which may include some hold time" since early July.

I know UM tweeted that they were "closing files" at some point, but it also doesn't sound like that was reflected in a status change. At least they're pretty transparent (compared to a lot of schools!). 🙂

I can't help but notice how high their MCAT averages are for IIs. 35.5 for IS and almost 38 for OOS...I guess it makes sense because they are probably getting some of the best applicants from around the country. Nevertheless, it is intimidating 😛

Yeah there are two different statuses. There are people who mentioned the "on hold", I don't remember well whether on SDN or on the UofM tweet chats.

I would much rather knowing what my status is exactly :/ I feel like a "file complete-under review" status could vary from a highly desirable interview invite to an undesirable rejected applicant and yet we can't know until they actually send out rejections. I don't like false hope :/

Interesting. Good to know -- thanks! I guess I'm happy with the "under review" and will take it to be better than a hold... but who knows; only time will tell!

I know what you mean. I hate the schools that rejected me right away, but I grudgingly respect them for not stringing me along for 6-8 months.

Edit: after looking through last year's thread, it looks like the consensus was that a long review was akin to a "soft" hold. It seems like some of those people with super long review times were given interview invites in late November (and then again in January). There weren't many posts in that time frame, so it's tough to really get a good feeling for it. Nevertheless, all hope isn't lost!

I hope we can hear something good soon. For many people last year, a complete status was basically a silent rejection. They didn't hear any update until the last spots of interview invites were taken. I guess I'll just hope for the best for us!

Did anyone get an interview invite today? They sent about a dozen, according to the twitter.

Has anyone gotten an interview after taking 2+ weeks to complete the secondary? I took a very long time to complete the secondary for this school because it was my first one. Now I'm worried that I shot myself in the foot 🙁

From what I've garnered, your time to completion doesn't matter as much as your completion date.

I took over 3 weeks and it was fine. only n=1, but I don't think it's a huge deal.

In previous years during this time they had their "biggest" tuesday/thursday when they sent the largest number of interview invites. I hope this happens soon and includes earlier applicants!

So I apologize if this has already been answered but:

I added U Michigan back in September. Never heard anything from them, no email that acknowledged receipt of my primary app nor any invitation email to complete a secondary. Today, I decided to see if I could check my status on their website, and found that I could... The status page says they received my primary app on Sept 9 and I have no idea how long I've been able to access the secondary.

Is it worth it at this point to even bother completing and submitting it? I mean, it may have been almost 2 months since I was technically able to do the secondary, but since I never got an email, would it be a lost cause?

Thanks!

If you're out of state and not a really competitive applicant, I honestly don't think it's worth it at this point. UMich and UofChicago are some of the first schools at which I was complete (in late August), and I think I am considered late by their standards, especially since I'm not super-competitive at those schools. I was rejected from UofC in mid-October (whereas quite a few others complete around my date were rejected earlier, so I at least passed initial reviews), and UMich now has less than 100 OOS interviews left to give (out of an original 375). However, if this is a dream school for you and you're a fairly competitive applicant, it might be worth a try. I think chances would be better if applying in June/July at those schools for applicants who aren't extremely competitive.

Well, I'd like to think I'm fairly competitive. I've gotten II from places like UCLA and UCSD; however, I was rejected from UChicago post-secondary. I'm just kinda bummed that I might be out of the running simply because I never received an email from them regarding my primary or secondary application. It's not really a dream school though; I added it to my list after I was essentially done with all my other secondaries, and only then did I learn about the strength of the UMichigan program. I think I might just complete and submit the secondary for the chance, no matter how minuscule, to be considered. What's another ~$80 anyway? ._.

I wonder how much love Michigan would show for a hometown boy. I went to middle school and high school in AA and doing undergrad here as well.

Well, you probably have in-state residency, then, which automatically puts you on a tier above most of us ..

Well, I was just wondering whether growing up in A2 and staying in A2 for undergrad (basically been here half my life) would give me a bit more love than the normal in-state candidate. One can dream right?

It doesn't help though that Michigan is a top ten and highly competitive. After looking at my GPA and overall resume, I'd rather be IS in Texas atm...

ay dios mio. November 15th is still so far away. Cannot wait to here back from mah first choice

*hear.... (there's a time limit on editing posts now?)

How many people keep checking 10:10 T and 3:33 Th even though you sorta know your status isn't going to change at this point? Been complete since late July - I can't seem to let go of the dream 🙂

Right here! 😕 It's my undergrad school, so I would have liked to get an interview and see some of my friends who are there... but it was a huge reach for me to begin with 😉

I've given up my dream. I started rooting for the buckeyes again, helped when dr capers called me at 2 am on 10/15. If offered an interview i might go. Maybe. Just to see what all the fuss is about 🙂

2am! Wow that is commitment. Enough to shift any loyalty

i still check 🙁 complete since early august

Michigan's transparency is greatly admired but it is also one-sided. To those who have completed in July, August and early September, would you rather be "rejected" or "under review"?

i would rather be rejected now than getting silently rejected with an "under review" status after all the interview spots are taken. I personally hate false hope

I agree. Just reject me already! The process should go both ways with transparency!

If they were to reject me no matter what, then I'd prefer to be rejected earlier in the cycle lol

I would only want to be rejected if I actually have a "closed file". I'd be happy to wait for another 6 months if it means I still have a small shot at an interview, though.
i find it very hard to believe that if someone is under review since july/august, their application is still really considered and they still have a chance for an interview/acceptance. We're in November already and more than half the interviews have been offered. I have never heard of ANYONE with a "file complete-under review" status being offered an interview this "late" in the cycle

Does anyone have an idea of what proportion of deferred-students are ultimately accepted by UMich?

i'm surprised nobody commented about the tweet chat email from umich today 😀

Oh Michigan, you keep my heart on edge. I should know better.

"Greetings from Admissions!" In my updates folder.

A survey.
