2013-2014 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
LOL not to be a Debbie Downer, but I believe the Dean said that UNC has one of the highest rates of getting people they offer acceptances to, to matriculate. He said it was somewhere around 80%. I don't know how this translates to waitlist movement each year, but I doubt that any OOSers who have already committed to UNC would be bailing at this point. The ability to switch to IS after the first year is an AMAZING perk.

That being said, fingers still crossed for those waiting!

240 acceptances, 180 matriculated...that's pretty damn high. The only other ones I know with yields that high off the top of my head are Harvard (~75%) and UWashington (80%)

If anyone is curious about the breakdown:

IS - 175 accepted, 152 matriculated

OOS - 65 accepted, 28 matriculated.

Did anyone in the SDN community have any luck (waitlist or accepted) with less-than-stellar GPA/MCAT scores? It's clear that people out there who have 3.5s and <30s are accepted, but I would love to hear about your success at UNC. I'm hoping other success stories might help me believe that I have a chance.

Thanks!

I have less-than-stellar stats. My undergrad GPA was pretty low due to various circumstances. I did a post bacc program and ended up doing very well. I also have a lot of clinical experience and am a slightly older applicant. I applied for the first time this year and was successful. I really tried to demonstrate in my app and interview that I learned from my mistakes made in undergrad. My work activities and recommendation letters displayed my commitment and passion to become a physician.

I am a re-applicant and was wait listed this time. I am IS, for undergrad had 3.6 science and for grad school 4.0 science. MCAT was 30. 600+ hours of clinical volunteering and shadowing, around 100 hours other community service. Thought my interviews went great here and one guy (not my adcom) mentioned that he thought I would make a great addition to the class and thought I'd have better luck this time...btw my adcom was Dr. Church and no one seems to get in with him...

I'm currently wait listed with a 3.8/29, but I think that's because I have some unique extracurriculars/personal experiences and great letters of recommendation that carried most of the weight. Luckily I'll be re-applying with a 34 if things don't work out this cycle.

IS accepted 3.6 science 3.4 overall 29 MCAT, approximately 20,000 of clinical care (paramedic), americorp alumni, veteran....UNC def does not only care about grades. I was working 40-50 hr a week while going to school full time which helped show why my grades were not higher.

Got the call this morning. Accepted off the WL for the Fall. Hang in there and don't give up hope!

I was accepted off the WL last Friday...yes the 13th. I am an IS female. I had a strong GPA in college (3.8) but my MCAT was not so strong (26). I am a nontraditional student with a lot of clinical and academic research experience, tons of volunteer experience in clinical and non-clinical settings, I worked full time through undergrad and faced some challenging family situations through college. UNC most definitely cares about the whole picture, the whole person. Don't give up!!
