2013-2014 University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) - Galveston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For the school itself, UTMB won't send you stuff pertaining to enrollment until around April/May anyways, but once they do, if you haven't heard from anywhere else, go ahead and fill out the forms. Housing can wait until then as well if you want. There's plenty of time so don't stress too much over it.

Oh awesome. I was asking in regards to housing. Someone I know at utmb told me housing fills up quick so just making sure I don't wanna rush anything. Thanks for all your help! Been great!

Did not match and this school was my only interview 🙁
I was in your position last year. Interviewed at UTHSCSA and UTMB, was only placed on UTMB's wait list, and didn't get in. This year, I ended up with 5 interviews, pre matched to UTHSCSA on Dec 31st, and matched to my number 1: UTH. I was just proactive last year and did my best to improve my application. There is no secret formula to get into med school. Just do what you think is best for your application (research, mcat, anything) and you'll be fine. Really hope you hear back this year, but if not, just think about the countless other applicants who have been in your shoes, and made it.

Best of luck to you man

Finalize my acceptance in mystar portal. UTMB here I come. Hello future classmatesss (I'm over excited)

I'm on the alternate list! Any other OOS on it? Hoping all of you OOSers with an acceptance get accepted to awesome schools besides utmb so I can get a spot 😉

Need clarification if anyone else got the alternate pool e-mail. UTMB was my number one on the Match rank. I matched somewhere else and have two weeks to reply. If I accept that offer from the other school, does this remove me from the alternate pool list at UTMB?

In the alternate pool e-mail, it read something along the lines of "Applicants holding a position at another school before June 1st will automatically be withdrawn from the alternate pool at this time."

accepting the spot at the school you matched to will not take you off the waiting list since UTMB is your number 1. If UTMB accepts you off the alternate list, you will then have 2 weeks (i believe) to accept or decline their offer. Accepting your match will not forfeit your place in UTMB's alternate pool.

What was said in the email is correct. Texas schools have an agreement that if an applicant already has a spot in a school, then after June 1st, no other school can make an offer to this student (meaning after June 1st, you will be taken off UTMB's wait list).

Hope that helped...

Thanks..that helped IMMENSELY. The wording of the e-mail was a bit confusing I guess because I interpreted it to be that if I hold a position at another school before June 1st, I will automatically be withdrawn from the alternate pool AT THIS TIME...(i.e., the moment I accept the other institution I'm instantly removed from UTMB pool)

can current students chime in? besides the background check and the transcripts what else do we need to submit right away? I'm assuming the immunization and earth insurance info will come to is in a packet at a later date?

From what I remember.....get your transcripts in ASAP of course, and proof of your degree as soon as it's available if you graduate this May, also send the background check back quickly. Also fill out our FAFSA, and if you're looking for possible scholarship aid, you need to put your parents' info on it as well, even though you're a graduate student now. The immunization thing isn't crucial to have done before class starts, but get it done sooner rather than later, I think that comes in another packet, but if you have questions look of the student health website. You will provide proof of insurance on Mystar by like the second week of class or something like that. So if you're getting the student health plan, you have time. Later packets will have a couple scholarship applications, but they have some restrictions. Also one of the packets has info about how to apply for the tracks, if you're interested in that. And there will be a card to fill out regarding your white coat ceremony and coat size. I think that's all, but others feel free to chime in.

thanks for the wealth of information!
if I graduated already (nontrad) the transcript should suffice as proof of degree correct?

Well, this may be a silly question but since the match, I receive the welcome email, then application communication #2, 3 and 5, not #4. I wonder if anyone is in the same situation, should I contact the school?

I didn't get 4 as well- I just assume that once you got your is everything is good to go

The TDCJ release forms aren't the same as a background check right? I'm asking because there isn't a "background check" item on that checklist on UTMB's website. If it's not the same, is there a particular website we should go for the background check?

I'm pretty sure the TDCJ is the background check. in fact, it seems more extensive than the other background checks I've done. I think it's bc of the prison hospital that students might be working at

Yes. Lots of schools use online background checks, but those papers are the background check app for UTMB, there is no separate website or anything like that

how long was the background check? do they tell us when everything is clear? not that I've done anything, just that background checks always scare me 😛

They never contacted me about it once I sent it in so I'm thinking its one those no news is good news things

ah okay 🙂 I just can't wait to meet all my future classmates an start. I bet there's a lot of paperwork ahead though...

Is there a facebook group yet? If there is, someone add me. I can pm my name.

How are the Houston/Austin/Galveston assignments made? I hear that 48 students go to Austin. How many go to Houston? Is it competitive, or does (almost) everyone end up getting what they want? If it is competitive, how is it decided?
Thanks.

That decision isn't made until spring of your 2nd year, when they hold a big class meeting and do sign-ups. I'm only a first year, but I was talking to an MS2 and she said this year everyone wanted the Houston spots, probably because a lot of UTMB students come from the Houston area and could therefore live rent-free with their parents. She actually said not a lot of people wanted to go to Austin, because of the high cost-of-living (UTMB students who choose to go Austin or Houston year-round have to provide their own housing).

There's more info here: http://www.utmb.edu/oce/students.htm

So does that mean not everyone gets what they want? Someone else told me things usually fall into place because each area, galv Austin and houston are stronger in different areas of interest so someone interested in psych may be more like to stay in galv vs someone interested in peds

Does anyone know if/when there is an admitted students' second look?

Totally excited about being accepted MD 2018 but waitlisted at my #1 UTMB. Anyone know if there is usually a lot of waitlist movement here like more than the '10-15' posted from their site?

Are they receptive to LOIs?

During my interview they said there were 7 people getting off the waitlist, which kinda make sense. After the match, we should have one student for every spot in all tx medical schools. Unless they get accepted at Baylor and other big name schools, I don't see anyone giving up his/her tx spot. But let cross your fingers for the best.
From some of the previous post, it seems like UTMB is not a fan of LOI, but you can always call and ask them first before sending your LOI.

For the purpose of scholarships, if I am married, do I still need to put my parents' information on the FAFSA? I put my husband's financial information in.

I sent one in last year about two weeks after the match, and I got off the waitlist in May. I don't see how it could hurt - I emphasized what I like specifically about UTMB and how that meshed with my personality and goals for med school and beyond. I didn't see too much waitlist movement last year at UTMB compared to some of the other Texas schools, but there were definitely still people who made it off the list, like me.

I'm not sure about this situation, I might ask someone in enrollment services to get the right answer.

I have a similar question regarding parents on fafsa. would you be willing to report back your findings? I tried calling and emailing enrollment services and haven't been able to get in touch with then...I wonder f it's because they are swamped...

Hello everybody! Sorry if this has been answered before, but could somebody explain a little about how UTMB calculates undergrad GPA? How does it treat letter grades, "W's," and re-takes?
Thanks in advance!

So in the acceptance letter, it says transcripts are due on March 3rd. On MyStar it says transcripts are due sometime in June (I think the 1st). Anyone know which one is right? I'm guessing the MyStar one is "more" correct, but just want to make sure.
wait...it says march third? I seem to recall May 15th?

My letter says the same, but I also got pre-matched in December. I'm guessing the March 3rd deadline is to get in your Fall '13 grades, and the May 30th/June 1st deadline is for your Spring '14 results...?

Well, for all colleges and universities you previously attended (and if you're currently enrolled somewhere now), the acceptance letter says transcripts need to be in by March 3rd. If you graduate this spring, this semester's grades have to be sent in by May 30th. The only thing I see related to May 15th is that's the deadline for choosing a final school (can't hold acceptances with multiple schools after that day). They might have changed it possibly? I got a pre-match offer in December, so maybe they altered the dates in the letters they sent out to people after match day.
Sorry- I checked my letter and your right. That's concerning since that's not very long for those of us that matched. One of my transcripts is taking forever and I have no control over it 🙁 hopefully they are somewhat lenient on that date...

I finally reached them and they said that we do need to put our parents information in for the FAFSA. 🙂

So when do we hear about the financial aid? Will it be posted on MyStar or via email?

Heard there was some acceptances of the wait-list at some TX schools. Has there been any wait-list movement here?

None that I know of. Here's hoping. Last year, nothing happened till mid-April. UTMB is my #1, so I'm really hoping for it.
