2014-2015 Hofstra University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats everyone! Hopefully they send waves out a bunch this week!

Congrats to everyone that got an II! Looking forward to having you all here on interview day. And to those still waiting...hang in there! It's still very early.

We just finished orientation and began class today. Definitely made me even more excited about the rest of this year!

How are you all abbreviating "Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine" in your secondaries?

Yea "Hofstra" should be fine. You can abbreviate the health system as "NS-LIJ" if you ever refer to it specifically

From a current student, what are your biggest likes and dislikes about your school?

The acceptance rate after interview is about 11%.

Its more than that. I don't know the exact number, but schools in general usually accept 2-3 times the number of matriculants (since not everyone that is accepted will end up attending that school).

Eek.. hopefully they accept more than those seats... I think the class size is going up to 100, too, but not sure.

They increased it to 100 seats for my year, and it'll be approx 100 seats for every year now.

Well I've only been here a week so far so these are just my first impressions.

Likes:
-The faculty/course directors. A lot of them already know who I am (compared to undergrad where you're 1 of 400 people in a lecture). You can tell that the course directors are excited to be there and teach you, and they were very approachable and helpful during lab today. They're already starting to push us into thinking critically about everything we observe/learn.
-The students. It also seems that the students are genuinely happy to be here (which I've heard isn't always the case at some schools). The MS1's are very open and easy to talk to, and everyone in the class is already starting to become friends with one another (which I imagine will continue as we meet everyone else in the class!). The MS2's are also very approachable, and they've helped me out a lot during this transition. In general, the camaraderie among the class is already pretty good, and people are always posting about hangouts on the Facebook page and inviting everyone.
-The curriculum. This is more speculation since I've only had 1 day of class and haven't yet experienced the curriculum, but I'm getting a good feeling that I'll learn way more through this curriculum than I would through 1000's of lectures. We're basically instructed to read up on the material and learn the subjects before each class session, and during class (small-group PBL sessions), we apply that knowledge to clinical cases. I haven't done it yet, but based on what I've been told, I'm really excited about it!

Dislikes:
-I honestly haven't found anything I don't like about the school yet, granted its only been a week. If anything, I'd just say the location. It isn't the safest area, and you do have to be extra careful walking around outside of campus at night. It's also a suburban-ish area, so don't expect anything like a college town. That being said though, there does still seem to be a good amount of things to do here, and there are places open late. Oh and Manhattan is only a 30 minute train ride away.

I'll try and answer this question again in a few weeks after I experience several weeks of class and get to know the school even better.

Also I selected that I was interested in student housing for the interview. Do any current students know when I would be informed of this, or if I should contact admissions for more information?

I submitted my app + letters on 7/19 and still haven't received a complete email. However, I see all green checks on the checklist. Is it worth emailing them?

How exciting! Just got an II!

Complete 7/17

For those who are interested:
Stats: 3.83 GPA, 32 MCAT
My app is well rounded, but research is out the hizzie.

Congratulations!!! May I ask, did you receive a complete email after submitting your secondary?

If it's like last year, then they don't send a complete e-mail. They just update it on the portal with the green checks.

Hi, I'm a current 2nd year at Hofstra. The list of people that requested housing has been made, currently we are trying to match you with students. You should be informed about this by early September would be my guess.

Thanks for the reply! That sounds good. I emailed admissions on Thursday but they haven't gotten back to me yet. Do you think I should book a hotel room just in case, and then cancel?

ugh Hofstra is my number one choice, complete 7/22 and still no II. I know it's neurotic to get nervous so early, but it's so hard not to!

Don't stress! Tons of schools haven't even started sending out first wave IIs so there's no cause to panic 🙂 It's so early in the cycle still.

>tfw people who were complete after me are getting IIs :'(
