2014-2015 Hofstra University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah I know it is still early, but it is disheartening to see IIs sent out to people complete way after me! Just have to stay patient and positive...

"The School of Medicine uses a rolling admissions process, with the first offers of admission to be extended no sooner than mid-December."

Is this uncommon?
November 12 was the first date for an acceptance in last year's thread. I don't know if they are changing their timeline this year, but I wouldn't see why it would be a month later. And yes, that is relatively late.

II last week! In-state and complete in mid-July. This is one of my top choices!! 🙂 Hang in there, guys. They're definitely reviewing out of order.

ETA: I got an October date. Either someone else must have withdrawn, or they're adding earlier dates now.

I just got my II today and when I logged in to schedule my interview date, the closet possible was on Dec 3rd. Isn't that a little to far?

Got an II today too and yeah, the earliest i'm seeing is way in December too. Complete 08/05.

I'm wondering if they will add more dates, I don't want to schedule december and then they add earlier ones...anyone has any thoughts

They don't actually add new ones - I called because there was a bit of an issue with my interview date and the really sweet lady explained the process a bit to me. 14 people interview each date, and I assume they do something like 10-12 people are allowed to sign up for the dates initially. If you read the email (when they confirm your interview date), it says you can email back to be put on the waitlist. I'm assuming about 2-4 people are pulled from the waitlist into earlier dates, either on a first-come-first-serve basis or whatever method they have. Take the earliest date you can, get yourself on the waitlist, and hope for the best.

Hey,

Probably going to add this school. Has someone posted the list of secondary prompts? I have time to write but no money to pay AMCAS atm.

If you are currently not a matriculated student, please indicate what you have been doing since the time of graduation until now.
If your undergraduate education was interrupted for any reason, please indicate the reasons, the duration of the interruption, and how you spent your time.
Please share anything your application does not include, but that you would like to bring to our attention. For example, is there anything special you would add to our School?(1500 Characters)

I also received an interview invite today! Complete 7/25. It looks like there aren't any available interview dates until December.

Anyone know if uploading app. updates prolongs the review process?
Complete on 7/16 still waiting.

Congrats! This is my first II of the season too, and I'll also be flying from CA! Complete mid-July, LizzyM ~ 74
There ya go! I've chosen 12/8 for now and decided not to waitlist for earlier in the hopes that my other schools in that area will invite me soon and I'll be able to coordinate them all in one go. Good luck!

My college finally sent out my committee letter yesterday. Hofstra is the first school to send me a letter letting me know my application is complete. Fingers crossed for an II, this is my top choice.

II this morning OOS (CA), LizzyM ~75, my application was complete in early July.

It looks like II dates are only available in December. I like Monday interview dates (so I can leave during the weekend and only miss a day of work), so I picked the 8th.

That Tuesday is going to be hell though...

Two questions:

1) Got my II. Anyone who got invited in the last 3 days get an interview before December?

2) How do I find out my Lizzy M score?

1) They start in October, so by this week, they are definitely in December; don't worry, you're not late, Hofstra's system is just like that. You can get onto the waitlist for an earlier date by emailing them and hoping for the best
2) LizzyM is MCAT + 10*GPA

I'm sad I don't have an II from here yet. It's my top choice (said it on my secondary application, too!), and my stats are at (MCAT) or above (GPA) theirs. 🙁 I guess it's still semi-early...

Care to explain why Hofstra is your first choice?

To summarize, it just seems like everything they're doing has been really well-considered as opposed to following stagnant curricula just because that's how it's always been done. The early EMT work particularly appeals to me.

Hello all,

I'm currently a second year at Hofstra. If anyone has any questions about the school feel free to ask or PM me.

Why did you choose Hofstra? What do you like most about your school?

Hello all,

As a student, how much do you enjoy the PEARLs sessions and do you feel they are actively contributing to your understanding?

The curriculum was really what drew me to hofstra and a year in it is still what I like most about the school.

Everything we do is in small group sessions. And while in undergrad small groups could be really terrible, it truly works at Hofstra. Everyone is interested, excited and engaged in the small groups. It also fosters a great environment when the success of every member in your group depends on everyone else. The cut throat mentality present at some other schools where there is a constant level of competition just isn't present at Hofstra.

Furthermore PEARLS, in my humble opinion, is truly the best way to learn medical information. After the first course you are not allowed to bring notes into PEARLS sessions so you really have to know and understand the information to take part in the session. Pure memorization wouldn't cut it. And as such we remember the information long term. In addition to which we are seeing a case from presentation to conclusion in PEARLS so we don't just learn one topic, like just pharm or just path, everything is learnt together, which makes remembering the information much more intuitive.

Thank you so much for your response. I got a really good vibe about PEARLS when I was watching over some of the curriculum videos, for example Structure Lab seems super interesting. Anyways, outside of schooling do you have a large range of activities you can do in the area? Nightlife, extra curriculars, sports, etc?

Just got my II and have 12/17 as my interview date. I submitted my secondary on 7/2, but my letters weren't sent until 8/1. Excited to check out this school in December!

Got my first II invite from Hofstra on Saturday! Submitted 7/27, OOS, 32 MCAT, 3.8 GPA. Interviewing in early December!

At first I was upset about the rather late date, but in the email, they said that interviewing later has no adverse affect on your chances- they send out a set number of acceptances per "interview cycle". So interviewing in Jan versus October is the same. Yay!

Does anyone else's interview status say that the interview day starts at 12:00 AM? I know the day is supposed to start at 8 AM...

For people who are still waiting, are there only 2 things under the communication status? Do they send complete emails? Submitted 7/10 and wondering if I should give them a call...

Mine too. I don't think we have to worry about that. probably they didn't specify time when they set the status update and the system automatically assigned the 12:00AM.

I had four status.
1. Sec Invite
2. Sec Rec
3. LOR Rec
4. Complete and under review.

II this morning! Complete 8/11 🙂 managed to snag a November date that was open at the time. Really excited, one of my top choices.
