Hey guys I submitted my secondary two Sundays ago and heard back by this past Friday for a decision to interview! Very excited about Howard, does anyone know any info regarding the interview style or questions?

Good luck to everyone who has also submitted their secondary here!
Congrats! If you don't mind, what are your stats?

Congrats on your II! Did you ever receive a complete email?

urgh the "Interview: Not scheduled yet" gave me a heart attack

what is the average MCAT and GPA for Howard matriculants? 27 and 3.4?

Hi all,
I think it's worth calling Howard around the English pre-req. I went to a big ten school and they explicitly allowed students to opt out of any English classes after passing a freshmen exam. I don't expect leniency on any of the science pre-reqs, ie chem lab as mentioned above, but many college students don't take any English classes in college at all. I'll be clarifying with them next week and will post my response. Best of luck!

I took english 101 my freshman year and I have taken three other W courses (writing intensive) in other subjects - one being my honors thesis course for graduation. Is it okay to replace one of the english courses? I don't even know any pre-meds that have taken more than one course of ACTUAL english other than writing intensive courses.

I think that's fine, they don't specify wat english class in specific they want, but you can always call them to clarify. I went to a liberal arts university so i had to take 3 english courses lol

I love creative writing though so I'm one of the few premeds who wasn't upset about it haha

Acccording to MSAR those are the median values for matriculants last year.[/QUOTE

so if you have a 27 MCAT score, 3.4 GPA and some work experience with disadvantaged communities, you have a solid chance for an interview invite? as long as your EC, PS is good? I'm a Oklahoma resident though, will that put me at a disadvantage?

There's technically no real IS bias because the school is in DC and it's not a state so everyone gets the same tuition too. I'd say go for it. They definitely like it when you've worked with underserved communities and if you're around the MCAT and GPA range for them you should have a fair shot. I believe this is true even with ORM students (not sure if you're one, but that question comes up a lot too.)

also, I'm sure that submitting a secondary early (like within August) gives applicants an advantage because there are more II to give out? Do you know what the class size is? From what I understand, the number of II is usually 3 to 5 times the class size and the number of acceptances are usually 1.5 to 2 X the class size.

Their class size was 118 last year with deferred acceptances. Note that sometimes higher stat applicants get II before lower stat applicants. But yes, the earlier you can get it in the better. Those numbers are probably right, though you can get confused by number of acceptances and number of students matriculated which are different because more acceptances are given than students matriculate to any given school. Do you have the MSAR? It's what I'm using to get all this info and it only costs $25. Not that I have a problem answering your questions lol it could just be useful for you. @SkipJunior

on average, how many people submitted complete applications to howard (primary+secondary) for the 2014 and 2013 entering classes? Just want to know what our percentage chances are of receiving an II?

I think it says on their website 4400, which is like almost half of those that applied! Lol. Is this normal for other school??

Getting an II IS still very slim but if u get one chances of getting accepted is very big assuming they do #seats times at least 2 like most schools do!

so you mean there were only 4400 complete applications even though there were around 9000 people who submitted AMCAS applications to Howard? Seems about right, many people include schools in their AMCAS list that they end up not writing secondaries for.

yes indeed, 301 II/ 4400 complete apps!!!

however keep in mind that a large chunk of that 4400 complete apps is submitted later in the cycle so there's a definite advantage in applying early in the cycle, your odds do become higher

hi all, I called and they stated clearly that ALL of their listed pre-reqs are an absolute must and you need to have them ALL completed by the time of matriculation. no exceptions on any of it per the admissions staff I spoke with. if you have questions on your 2ndary, I highly encourage you to suss out the details prior, and not after like me. use the space for "explanations" to clarify anything. best of luck!

Call them. I didn't get mine either and when I called, they said they were having some technical difficulties getting the secondary apps to everyone. But they sent it to me while I was on the phone.

Thank you for your response. I called and they admitted that they sent me the wrong thing. Just completed and submitted the secondaries

Does anyone know if there's any real advanced in having a family member who previously attended Howard (alumni)? My dad completed his residency at Howard also an uncle and more recently a cousin.

I believe so. I heard that medical schools like having family legacies because they're more willing to donate to the school later on.

anyone else received II from Howard yet?

do you mean the auto payment email after paying the secondary fee or an actual complete email from howard? I submitted my secondary 2 days afteryou and no complete email so far.

It was this one.
SECONDARY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT - PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS EMAIL.

Thank you for your interest in Howard University College of Medicine.

You may go on the Apply.medicine.howard website and see that your secondary has been received. The code "SR" indicates that. we are now able to see/review your secondary. A code of "SR" means that both your secondary and letters of recommendation are visible and your application is complete. There will be no other entries on apply.howard website after this designation. However, we assure you that your application is being reviewed.

We will send interim emails in December and again in March. Final emails will begin to be sent in March (if not earlier) and will continue through June as we release applicants.

Yeah, that's the same email I got about a week ago. It's odd that the code is no where to be found

When did you guys submit your secondaries? I submitted 8/11 but still haven't gotten this email/any complete email

I know it is so odd. Where are they going to put this said code? Ha... Strange so little has been said about this

Yeah, I thought it would be right beside our status on the application page. But it seems like no one can find this code, so hopefully, it's not a big deal and they have access to our secondary apps.

This is very disheartening. Does this mean that the people who have submitted secondaries and didn't receive complete emails (like the one worldchanger36 received) have been automatically rejected?

what a waste of $75, oh lord!

No way bro( or chica you never know) I am still in this and there is no reason to think that. Bring it down one notch is ok right?

Are you sure you are complete (all letters of rec, MCAT scores, etc.)?

Even if you are, the process is just so unpredictable. I wouldn't worry about it just yet.

Congrats! If you don't mind, what are your stats?

Congrats on your II! Did you ever receive a complete email?

Thanks guys! I got a 30 on the Mcat and have a 3.8 overall and science gpa. Had a decent amount of volunteer work in under served areas and served as a student leader to get other students involved in the under served community surrounding my university.
I did receive a complete email for my secondary being complete and that my complete application was under review, followed by an interview invite. Surprised with how fast it was reviewed. Any tips or anything you guys have heard about interview style or questions would be awesome!!

Good luck to you all too

I received a II 3-5 days ago. I was complete like on the 10th I think. I received a complete email and II within like 10 minutes of each other. 24-27 MCAT, 3.5+ gpa. Lots of ECs

Did you have the SR code on your status page? I am guessing they pop that on there when you are under review maybe.

I never looked at the status page after I submitted my secondary. I had received the complete email and II within minutes of each other, and I did not look at my status page between that short time because I was busy and couldn't log on at the moment :/ so I can't tell you for sure I'm sorry.

Eh thats ok.... So does anybody have the SR code? If so where does it show up? Epically confused about this:shrug:
