2014-2015 Howard University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well that would be an over simplification of the process. I would say it would be 3 to 8 weeks in general.

yes but considering it's very early in the cycle, 3 weeks might be more accurate if your secondary has already been submitted. Keep in mind that Howard only started giving secondaries in August. The majority of the 4400 expected secondaries will be submitted to Howard between September and December.

but wait, you received the howard complete email....I didn't receive a single email from howard after submitting my secondary!!! 🙁
I submitted my secondary 8/14 and just got the secondary received email today. Don't worry too much about it. Besides, you can always call and ask

I know I'm late in the game, but can someone post the questions on the secondary application?

Have you lived (for three years or more) in communities which are medically underserved, or where the majority of the population is economically and/or educationally disadvantaged?

After residency, do you plan to practice medicine in an underserved or disadvantaged community?

Have you worked (volunteer or paid employment) with medically underserved, economically disadvantaged and/or educationally disadvantaged populations?

Please provide below any additional information you believe is important in evaluating your application (e/g/. additional coursework, problems with academic record; disadvantaged, etc.

all those questions state to 'describe briefly', if the answer is yes

did not receive any emails from howard and did not find any SR code either. 🙁

Finally submitted my secondary for this school! Yipee! Hopefully that's my last for the season. It only took about an hour, so I'm kind of mad at myself for not doing it earlier (received on 8/11), but oh well, hopefully the turnaround time is not detrimental.

Does anyone know how long it takes to receive the secondary after adding the school on AMCAS?

What do you guys think of my chances?
-26 MCAT PS 11, VR 7, BS 8.
-3.69 GPA
-Volunteer work in Dominican Republic, Haiti, Costa Rica, Nicaragua (underserved)
-5 months research
-Couple medical/public health clubs on campus.
-Minority (Black/carribeaan)
-Volunteer at underserved clinics
-Medical Scribe
-Shadowed primary care physician, and another specialist.

Sounds great, I'd say you have a shot 🙂

What is the turn around time for hearing back from Howard? Are they on July applications right now? Has anyone from mid-August gotten an II?

Apply! I think their median MCAT is like a 27 anyways and you have a great GPA and good experience. 🙂

After submitting the secondary, in the status page does anyone else see a line in the Application Category column titled "interview"? The notes column corresponding to this says "not scheduled yet".

I'm not sure if everyone gets this or if I stumbled upon a status change before they emailed me.

Everyone has that. Thats not indicative of an II.

Do you mind sharing stats and complete date?

I am terribly sorry! I meant to post this in the Morehouse thread. I haven't received a II from Howard yet. Epic fail haha. Still hoping for Howard, though!

My stats are:

3.47 cGPA, 3.2 - 3.3 sGPA, 26 MCAT, African, minimal shadowing, most community service involved in providing food to the homeless, held leadership positions, mostly through my school's MSA, but was involved in various pre-health organizations, including Phi Delta Epsilon.

okay so you received an II for more house not howard? and are you a georgia resident and when were you complete?

For those with II: what dates were you able to choose from for interviews?

Yeah, and I'm not a Georgia resident, and I was complete for both Howard and Morehouse around 8/22 or so

okay thanks! and one more question - were you ever able to see the 'SR' code on your application status? because I received that email weeks ago but have yet to see the code.

Space reserved for prompt.

Please PM the essays or lack thereof to me when the secondary is available and I will update this.

Good luck to everyone applying! :luck:

yeah me too, I submitted around the same time as you. wait I have a green mark for everything except the padlock for the interview schedule. also I don't have no SR code.

I have a green mark on everything but that happens automatically when you complete the secondary. you were supposed to receive an email after you submitted your secondary acknowledging that you submitted it. I submitted 8/26 and got an email confirmation on 9/2

wow I submitted before you and still haven't received any email confirmation.

Did you sign your secondary application? b/c the system allows you to pay before 'certifying and signing' your document. just a suggestion :/ b/c i had a friend who applied last year and paid but overlooked the certify and submit part and it held up his application for a month. worth a try to double check

Yep I double checked, I did sign it after paying it way back in early August. Looks like there are other people too who have the same issue as me so maybe I shouldn't worry about it too much.

I only received the payment confirmation email..

I don't want to get anyone freaked out but just letting you know what I got. Maybe they stopped sending out the email because it talks about an imaginary 'SR' code that never appears so they probably got bombarded with phone calls after a certain period of time.

no I did not receive the email you got. I only got the payment receipt. I might just email them on Monday.
Thanks though! 🙂

I think SR just means "secondary received." I don't think there's an actual magical code

Just wanted to post an opinion that I heard the other day from two African American female recent medical school graduates that are attending a residency in my town. This does NOT reflect my views of Howard, so please don't bash me (I'm a gentle soul lol):
My boyfriend is a server and he told the two doctors that I was applying to medical school and that I was applying to Howard. They both told him "Tell your girlfriend to not apply to Howard! The faculty there does not support its students and all of my friends there regret it" among other things that I don't care to repeat.

This honestly made me mad at first, since I would definitely attend this school in a heart beat! Has anyone heard anything similar, or are there any current students that can weigh in. I visited Howard about a month ago and everyone was friendly, so I just want to know where this idea even came from. Yet again, please don't bash me for posting this lol
