2014-2015 Louisiana State University - Shreveport Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Application submitted 06/03/14 at 10:14am and it was reviewed and finished today after my transcripts finally arrived.

Good luck to everyone this year.

Has anyone received the secondary application link that didn't work?

Did anyone get an update from Shreveport about secondaries today before 2pm? Status reports were supposed to be sent by 2pm and I didnt get mine as of now.

Do they wait until AMCAS is verified to send secondaries?

NO, they send them out before your application is verified unless it was before they sent them. I talked to the school and they said we may not see updates until August.

Wow August? I wonder if anyone knows the questions on it so I can maybe prewrite them

Just got an email from LSUHSC-Shreve with secondary info!!! It came a day after my AMCAS was verified so I'm wondering if it had anything to do with that.

Looking forward to the application process, and keeping fingers crossed for an interview invite (even though I may be less than deserving). Good luck, everyone!

I got the secondary as well! I don't like this diversity essay lol

I have to admit that I'm a tad confused by one thing on the secondary:

When it requests your "most fulfilling experience in research," what should you put in the box if you haven't done any research? I'm sure I could think of something, but I don't want to write a bunch of nonsense that means nothing. Any ideas?

I'm guessing that burning holes in leaves with a magnifying glass when I was seven does not count.

Have you ever taken a seminar class where they teach you about research even though you never actually do it? That might work.

Otherwise, I'm thinking that it would be best to be honest rather than putting nonsense. They'll probably see from your AMCAS that you don't have any research experience, so you don't want to put an answer that they will see through. If I were you, I'd probably say that you don't, but you would love to be a part of it sometime in the future.

Nope, they said they wouldn't send it until August 8 I believe. I hate how everything isn't electronic! I wonder if I can call to verify that all my application materials got there.

Mailed my secondary, pic, fee, and diversity essay yesterday. Anybody else get a little hung up on the secondary FAQ website where it said, "
However, we will NOT accept mailed Secondary Applications. You must complete and submit online by December 15."? I mailed mine because it said to mail it on the app and elsewhere on the LSUHCS website, and I had to print it to sign it.

I didn't notice that before. That's so confusing! But there wasn't even an option to submit it online. On the app, it even highlighted "US mail" so I think we're okay.

I took one of those research methods seminar classes offered through the honors college at my university, but it was psychology-based. I feel like the admissions people would roll their eyes while reading my secondary if I wrote about it, so I guess I'll have to think of some elegant way of saying that I lack major research experience. Oh well, I know I'm not the only one in that boat.

I didn't see that on the website. On the secondary, it says "US MAIL ONLY" in large, highlighted print. It says here that "all application materials can be mailed in the same envelope to the following address..." I think you're safe, and it might be helpful to alert them of the conflicting information on their website. They don't need all us premeds stressing out anymore than they already are!

Yeah, it's pretty obvious it needs to be mailed. It's just such an important application than even a crumb of conflicting info makes me wary. I'll send 'em an email.

Will be applying next year. Does LSU Shreveport take OOS applicants (specifically: MS)?

I am pretty sure that LSU-Shreveport does not accept OOS applications (please see this link). If you're an OOS student looking at attending medical school in LA, your best bets are LSU-New Orleans and Tulane.

I'm assuming that the "300 characters or less" stipulation on the Secondary is a strict guideline? I just feel badly writing so little on my application...

Yeah I felt bad doing that too! I actually wasn't sure if they meant 300 characters with spaces or 300 characters without spaces. I ended up doing it with spaces and it only filled up about half the box.

I did it without spaces and it was still like four sentences of content.

Good luck to everyone this semester! Doing ED this go around and just got my interview invite this afternoon. Trust me, if I can at least get this far so can you all!

FYI: When I received my interview invite they requested a one page resume with a photograph embedded in it.

FYI...For anyone who has not talked to Dr. Kennedy and attempted to present this to him...Treat this one page resume like it is going to be seen by Jesus..he is old but tech-savvy(Kennedy-lol). He wants a perfect picture embedded and it has to be organized. Don't treat it lightly. Quote from the man in the bow-tie himself, "A lot of people barely look at this(resume), but I think it can tell you almost everything you need to know about a person." Also know 3 world-reknown doctors and the VA scandal.

So does anyone know what the turn around on a yes or no from shreveport for ED applicants is? I know there were interviews the past few days.

The med students I talked to said like 26/30 EDPs got accepted last year. Many heard within two weeks and the rest got put on the acceptable list/rolled in with regular apps and were accepted later.

Congrats! Did you get a phone call from Dr. Kennedy? I didn't know if they were planning on doing that this year.

Thanks! And no phone call, I was wondering the same thing, but I only got a letter.

How often does the committee get together to review applicants? I got put on the Acceptable list following application and interview through ED. Can anyone explain to me the chances of still getting in off the list?

EDIT: And CONGRATS, Warhawk!

Thanks Jabawocky (nice profile pic by the way). I don't know about how often the committee gets together to review applicants, but I have heard in years past that pretty much every ED applicant that gets put on the Acceptable List gets accepted, but they usually don't find out until the Spring semester. Hope this helps

Thanks, I appreciate it. Yeah, I let myself get my hopes up through ED but cant let myself get too worried about it. I mean they didnt outright tell me "no", which they very well could have right?

Well Jaba at least you're not alone on the acceptable list. I'm on that SOB too. I thought I nailed my interviews. Hopefully they wont leave us dangling on there too long. Congrats warhawk. Good luck everybody.

Yeah bud, its been a Long afternoon after getting that letter.😎 Oh well though, keep working and hopefully we can all be laughing about this in our purple scrubs next year.

Yeah they sent out a few interview invites, just not to anybody here I guess. They seem to be going down the apps and reviewing and an order of marked complete style so earlier apps get in first. Of course with it sooooo quiet on here you may never know they are on your group or not.
Bump. Has no one heard anything?

Why don't they ever pick up the phone, I've been calling for every thursday for 3 weeks. I'm not even sure I'm complete.
