2014-2015 Mercer University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So only 5 have been waitlisted so far?! (On SDN anyway) ...hmm...either far less people than I expected use SDN...or MUSOM still has a while to go.

After sending them an email, I got this as a reply:

We would like to inform you that your application to the MD program at Mercer University remains under consideration. Due to the unpredictable nature of the admissions process, at this time we are unable to provide information in regard to the likelihood of acceptance. Thank you for your patience.

To help prospective applicants and re-applicants strengthen their application to the MD program at MUSM, the Admissions Office has scheduled a session that is intended to provide information to each of you in this regard. This event is scheduled for Saturday April 18, 2015 at 9:30 am. We encourage you to register this event if you intend to re-apply to the MD program next year.

Total waste of my time!!! :-\

I had to nag them just to get that type of reply man... Smh. This process has been a real learning experience... :-(

Oh and for the record, that thing for reapplicants really doesn't help.

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.

All they really tell you is that the waitlist IS ranked and you probably lost by a few thousandths of a point and that if you have a LOR from a physician who is not primary care, you just shot yourself in the foot.

Mine is gone as well. Hopefully this means they've started taking steps on updating our profiles and are closer to giving us some sort of notification of our status.

I got wait listed and my tab is missing too, so I think it just happened to everybody!

Mine is gone as well. I think this is their way of telling us that we are so low on the waitlist that they don't even want to give us any hope. Basically this is going to be like the first time I applied to Mercer and they are not going to send us rejections. Still doesn't even say I interviewed either.

Noooooooooo...oh well. May will be here soon enough...time to get those apps ready folks!

Still surprised to not see more waitlists on SDN...isn't mercers waitlist supposed to be around 100?! surely more than 5 on SDN were qualified.

I never posted on here, but I am waitlisted. I saw my waitlist tab on my home screen last Monday, received the email invite to be an alternate on Tuesday, my waitlist tab reflected the confirmation Wednesday, and the waitlist tab has magically disappeared as of ten minutes ago. Less than a clue of what that means or what is going on, but I remain positive! 🙂

Not everyone is on SDN. I find it more troubling that I was qualified last year for WL last year and not qualified this year.

And yes something like 100 are waitlisted, but a very small amount get offered a spot.

As cycles go by...they get more competitive as more and more students are applying for (relatively) the same number of slots. Its an unfortunate truth :/

I received this email this past week and did not even email them. Kind of confused as to what this really means.

Well as everything they wanted to see an increase on was increased, plus I have about 4000 hours specifically in rural health care and everything I have is mostly higher than their average, but not high enough that they autoreject obviously as I had an interview.

They just haven't rejected me though but I remember how they did this from year before last.

Oh well both my interviewers admitted they didn't read my application anyway. Sigh.

Do you think your interviews usually go well? It seems like you've applied several times and you have improved your application a lot, so I understand how this must be discouraging. I'm just wondering if they're not "advocating" for you the way they do for the people who are accepted, and wondering what kind of impression you make. I'm WL'd at a few schools and accepted to none too, so I think my interviews were not as great as I thought originally.

My interviews are hit or miss, usually based on how liberal the interviewer is. I do best with URM and women and LGBT people.

Please remember that I am a mixed race transsexual who is also an observant Jew who spent some years in yeshiva. Since Mercer is lily white and religiously affiliated, I don't expect it to go over well. I had one interview there which flat out stated he would never let me in, that was three years ago. This year, both Mercer interviewers told me they didn't read the application.

I did do mock interviews with professionals and they said I did very well.

I'm sorry to hear that. That one interviewer was very offensive and I would also be offended if they did not look at my application at all. :/
I'm fairly certain both of my interviewers had not looked over my app. Prior to the interview we were told this was commonly done in order to prevent bias.

It isn't offensive to not look at an application..it's simply a "closed book" interview...I had one open (he looked at my application) and one closed...it is a bit of a pain to be in a closed interview cause you have to start from scratch...but it is in no way offensive. In my opinion..closed interviews tend to focus on your ability to communicate and convey your passion for medicine..whereas an open interview focuses on your ability to connect your previous experiences to your readiness for medicine. I prefer open interviews tho..

The two prior years of interviewing at Mercer, they all looked over it. Three gave thoughtful questions. One told me there was no way I was getting in and gave me a hostile interview. Then there were the two this year who stated they barely looked over it. All of Mercer's interviews are open file which they told us every year that I interviewed.

Do you think if at this point we haven't gotten a response, that this is one of those silent rejections?

Well that's frustrating considering that someone posted earlier that they received a rejection email. Feeling like as if I wasn't good enough for even a formal rejection haha

Do you think if at this point we haven't gotten a response, that this is one of those silent rejections?

It is what it was last time this happened to me by Mercer so I would assume yes. If Mercer would like to prove me wrong and throw me a WL spot, they have my permission though!

Is there anyone who got waitlisted/didn't hear anything last year that got in this year early decision (or I guess regular admission too)? I'm debating applying early admission to Mercer next year but I'm not sure if I should take not hearing anything at all as really bad news (worse than getting rejected) or what? Any insight on this? Also has anyone called Mercer to check their status? If so did you call Savannah or Macon?

So I called the mercer office and they said that if you haven't received any communication from the office and you interviewed that you are still under consideration for the waitlist and have not been rejected but they're encouraging you to reapply... so not much help. we're just in limbo. here's to the MCAT 2015!

you are awesome for calling! Waiting sucks so might as well be proactive and study for the MCAT again... or enjoy life

Did they say if we have to bumped to the wait list before being eligible for a seat?

I would assume so... We're kind of waiting for a waiting list spot is how I interpreted it...which doesn't make much sense to me but hopefully they have some kind of logic behind it. I guess it is better than being rejected? I don't know. she did recommend me going to the seminar they are having so regardless of what that other guy said I feel that it wouldn't be a total waste of time to meet some committee members and talk to them.

Sigh..it is a bit frustrating playing the waiting game..it's tough not getting feedback early...there isn't much time between the end of the cycle and the start of the next...making it a bit difficult to address concerns...Oh well.. here's to the next cycle and hoping I get a bit more love! Good luck everyone!

What doesn't make sense is if we are waiting for a waiting list spot, why would they feel that need to have what would be an "extended" reserve waitlist?

I believe Dean House (who was the only committee member present for the meeting BTW) said there really wasn't necessarily a ton of movement off their waitlist although I guess it is relative given Mercer only has like 80 people in their class. Remember a decent sized chunk of the class is set before regular interviews even go out because of the Agnes Scott linkage. The early decision/Agnes Scott is something like 30ish people. I might be wrong, but it was something like that. I think they said another 30-40 were originally waitlisted then accepted. I only remember that because it was a similar number to who is getting in ED.

As interesting as Mercer is, I really have to wonder what they are honestly looking for in a student. If they want to claim they want to produce rural physicians, they should take people from rural areas and people with rural experience. But don't mind me, I am just upset that I live in the middle of nowhere in a town that doesn't come up on their map and have a few thousand rural volunteering hours.

Like I said before, I still think we should assume this is a rejection just because of the odds. If they wish to prove me wrong, I'm all for it. I will say that some of us are being followed and searched on Linkedin and similar sites so who really knows what they are doing or planning. My Linkedin has reflected searches from people from Mercer, but then they did last year as well and I think the year before that as MSU did. And I know at least one person figured out who I was on Facebook so I hope they are enjoying my public posts about cooking. And I have a new follower here from Mercer so who knows, that could just be coincidental given I get new followers all the time.

Mercer is not religiously affiliated. Also, there are students of all ethnic groups and sexual orientation in the school. I highly doubt your demographics are the reason for your repeat rejections.

If you know your Mercer history, which you probably do since you applied there and this is one of the things people do in their research, you know Mercer was founded as a Baptist institution and until 2006 was funded by the Georgia Baptist Convention where they separated after 173 years due to differing views on homosexuality. They were still sending student groups to the student Baptist convention as of two years ago when they made another split for the same reason. While Mercer was on the more liberal side of things, many of their faculty are not. One of the first year teachers (and I have the name in my little interview book) actually stated in the interview that he would never accept an out gay person much less a transsexual because it would make the rural people uncomfortable. Believe it, don't believe it, it's your business.

When should we expect most of that Waitlist activity to occur? I'm going to have to pull the plug on another school if they make us wait too long. I know they say up until the day before classes start but come on. What's realistic?

Most movement will probably happen shortly after April 30th. That is the deadline for when applicants can hold an acceptance and get their deposit back if they decide to go to another school I believe. I think most people will probably try to pick a school by this date to not lose their deposits at other schools. There may be some movement when financial aid offers go out as well. I think a lot of that movement happens around the beginning of June. Basically by July, most of the waitlist movement is done except for maybe a few more acceptances.

Seeing as to how I attend the school, I know the history fairly well. I also know my classmates and can tell you that there are openly gay students at the school. While you may have gotten one bad interviewer, it's very obvious it isn't the norm likely not the reason your lack of matriculation.

Any way to confirm if April 30 is the last date to pay the deposit? How long after the deposit date can we expect Waitlist activity to occur?

Here are the AMCAS traffic rules:
https://www.aamc.org/download/364264/data/2014trafficrules.pdf
Number 7 lists when deposits can become non-refundable. I believe most schools adhere to this date. I would guess that waitlist movement will start the first few days of May, but I honestly do not know since it has to do with each individual's decision to rescind their acceptance before Mercer can start the process of offering a new acceptance.
All of this waiting is tough...

Hey I was wondering if anyone was going to this MUSM Strengthening Your Medical School Application Seminar tomorrow? I am wondering what the attire is and if anyone has gone in the past and found it helpful.

Hey! I was asking myself the same question so went ahead and emailed to ask a few days ago. They told me business casual would be alright. I'm sure it isn't the end of the world to be overdressed, but I won't be wearing a suit and tie or anything like that.

Thanks! Yea I realized last night it had snuck up on me and was thinking it was too late to email but you saved me a call!

Thanks from me too! I was wondering this as well.

Has there been any movement on the waitlist? Has anyone heard anything?

I follow the MCG thread and it looks like they've had two students accepted off the wait list already so people are definitely withdrawing from schools! I haven't heard of anyone off the wait list for mercer yet! good luck to all!

sincerely,
anxious student constantly refreshing email

Well yesterday was the deadline for the tuition deposit at mercer as far as I know. So maybe some action will happen soon
