Another Question...

If I talked about a major change in my life and how it influenced my decision to pursue medicine in my PS, is it a bad idea to use it for the "challenge you have overcame" secondary question? I have a few other things I can write about, but it is dwarfed in comparison. I do not want admissions to think I am being redundant, but at the same time, I don't want them to think I am trying to ignore what I discussed in the PS.

Thanks!

I have the same issue - I talked about big challenges in my personal statement. I am going to rework it, try to come at it from a different angle, for this secondary. Maybe talk about how the experience changed you, how it changed your outlook on the world/medicine, etc.

Hope that's helpful!

quick question on their "biostatistics" requirement. I didn't realized it had to be biostat, I took a UCLA ext Intro to statistics course this last year, but it was definitely not a biostat class... will I need to take another in the coming year?

I had a question regarding community vs. school activities. If I did community service through an on-campus organization, is that a community or school activity? If it is a community activity, then what is a part of school activity? Dance teams and things?

Ugh. Their web cache'd page from July 14th only lists regular statistics as a requirement. Today it says "biostatistics." :uhno:

I only have regular stats... and no other medical school requires biostats. I sincerely hope this is not the case.

me too haha.... guess we'll see what happens if we get an interview. They said they'll go over the prereq stuff during then.

Received a secondary today! IS applicant with 31-32 MCAT and >3.90 GPA

Ditto. Actually sort of pissed about this. MSAR still says only regular stats is a requirement, so this must have been a very recent change (?)

Hope they don't cut all the biostat-less apps from interview selection, as I don't think that's a very common course. 🙁 I'm a bio major, and the biostat course offered at my school was restricted to graduate students.

Secondary yesterday at 6pm pst! 3.9 gpa, 34 mcat verified 7/1. IS

Since they accept AP stats for the statistics requirement I'm assuming they'll accept non biostats stats classes as well

wait, two semesters of biochemistry are required?
I don't think so. It looks like it just needs to be included within the chemistry section--I think the "1 yr laboratory based course" is another entry in the list, not appended to the Biochem.

CHEMISTRY:

4 semesters/6 quarters, must include:
Inorganic Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Biochemistry
1 yr, laboratory based course

Usually schools are now doing biochem instead of 2nd semester O-Chem.

I think the 4 semesters refers to 2 Inorganic Chem, 1 O-Chem, 1 Biochem

i think it's just 1 semester ochem and 1 sem biochem. usually schools will let u do 2 semesters of ochem or 1 and 1, but irvine requires 1 sem of biochem.

also i only have regular stats...

Does anyone know if UCI takes committee letters in lieu of individual ones? (My undergrad committee letter includes 4 individual recommendations.) Davis specifically said that they wanted the individuals (optionally accompanied by the committee letter) but UCI didn't specify.

Does anyone know if Irvine sends out emails when you submitted your app/when you're complete? Or is it only indicated on the status page?

Crazy that they suddenly add biostat instead of plain old statistics? WHAT GIVES

I would call to seek clarification. It is very easy for misinformation to spread on forums like this, since if one person's mistake is echoed enough times it is perceived as truth.

It may say "biostatistics" but no one knows how strictly this is enforced.

Should I only write the minimum amount of classes I have took that meet their requirements? I have taken 2 upper division bio courses but not sure if I should enter in both.

Well I am sure we will start hearing news next week. I am nervous because I am missing 4 of the pre-reqs (though I am taking two of the classes starting next month). I fear I might be cut due to this reason alone.

Ahhhhhhh II an hour ago. 😍 The perfect treat after being stuck in SoCal traffic for 1.5 hours.

The dates I see open are Aug 25th and Sept 9th. Can't wait to see some of you folks! Hope a wave of interviews will be out this afternoon.

hellanutella, when were you complete? If you don't mind, what were your stats? Thanks!

All the deets are in my mdapps – ORM, in-state, 3.9+/39, strong research background, average ECs.
I was complete on 7/15 (props to UCI for the blisteringly fast turnaround)!

Congrats, dude! Good luck at your interview.

Thank you – I'm just wowed by the speed at which some of these schools work. 🙂 Hope you get some good news from UCI soon!
Wow UCI is working really fast! Congrats! I submitted on the same date as you, but no news yet...

Awesome! Congrats

For those of you still waiting anxiously to hear news from schools, my advice to you is to stay patient throughout this whole process! I know it is easy to compare yourself to others and think a rejection is imminent if you haven't heard something in awhile, but remember that no news is not bad news! I honestly submitted my secondary and hadn't heard anything from UCI f0r like 8 months before receiving an II. I'll be matriculating here in a few weeks. Keep your heads up!

when do pre secondary rejections start coming out? 🙁

Does anyone know the % interviewed that get accepted for IS applicants?

They don't give preference to Cali residents so it should be close to the overall rate which 2 years ago was 255 acceptances out of 568 interviews.

When you have a 39+ it is better to share that info sparingly, particularly in school-specific forums. Best way to approach if someone asks your stats is to just say 37+.

If I was an adcom with access to UCI's applicant pool I could probably identify you since only a handful of applicant have a 39 (this gets more simple as score goes up). Although it is unlikely that this would happen, it is possible, and could end unfavorably if you've said anything unfavorable on SDN.

Just a friendly PSA 🙂. Best of luck this cycle!

Thanks for the heads up – I appreciate it! Congratulations on your acceptances! I don't have anything to hide on sdn, but I'll try to be more discreet with my identifying info. 😉

If you are a UC Irvine admissions officer and have successfully deduced my identity, then I have a message: Your school is phenomenal and your admissions staff have been extremely helpful/responsive. 😍 Can't wait to meet any students/interviewees come autumn!

For the activities section in the secondary, the instructions state to list those activities that were most important to you, these can include activities listed on your AMCAS Application.

What kind of activities are you listing? the ones from your amcas application? other ones? I am not sure which ones i should list.

Thanks! 🙂

Haha thanks! I'll be an MS1 at UCI in a few weeks, so we may very well unknowingly meet down the road. Congrats again on your II 🙂

Submitted! Easy secondary.

Received post-secondary rejection via e-mail an hour ago. Doh. Good luck to the rest of you though!
