2014-2015 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you, that worked! Had to also change the picture size... it was under the limit in the first place but for some reason wouldn't work unless I made it even smaller. Good luck to everyone applying!

(lol waive fees... ur funny)

are there any matriculated med school students here that may provide some feedback regarding this animal of an autobiography by any chance?

Anyone else waiting until they email abt fixing it to submit the auto? I feel like i read my 2daries 100x before i submit and wanna save myself the effort if they just mess something up and i have to resubmit lol

PRAYING FOR A SECONDARY! do they send email confirmation of receiving the primary app?

Yes, I did. Then another email about your social security number/other steps you need to take.

have any secondaries come out since that first wave like a week ago? 🙁

ugh low GPA, (<3.5) but decent MCAT (33), verified ~6/15; OOS :[

No secondary for me either, IS 3.83, 38. I'm pretty anxious because I was rejected pre-interview from Pritzker MSTP a week ago...

For the description of the meaningful experiences, are you guys just labeling the same way you did on the primary? Can't really describe with 50 characters

Does anyone know if the admissions committee will start reviewing secondaries before our payments arrive; since we can't pay right now anyhow? I submitted my secondary yesterday, but I still can't pay since E-pay is unavailable.

50 characters for me was about enough to put a long title. I just used the same title I used in my primary application and added a couple words. I used the same meaningful activities I put on my primary app.

this is what im wondering. it's friday and they said it'd be fixed by the end of the week.

has anyone who was verified around a week ago still not received an initial email requesting SSN from here? I haven't gotten any emails yet and if I try logging in to their system it says my ID cannot be found.

I was verified on 7/9 and I haven't gotten any emails

For the most meaningful activities, how are you guys entering in the avg hours per week? On AMCAS, I have broken down the start date and end date because this was not a continuous activity. On the secondary, I entered it as average number of hours per week based on when I was doing the activity. Is this okay or am I supposed to take total hours (about 100) and divide it by the duration (about 2 years) of activity? Thanks!

Does anyone know if I should wait to submit the secondary since the payment still isn't working? Or do you think they will still look at the date you submit the secondary before the payment starts to work

Hello Everyone,

UCSD SOM Office of Admissions is expecting to fix everything by Tuesday. Hold tight!
so we should wait until then to submit? fine by me... autobiographical sketches are tough!

Done. Hardest secondary ever. Hope they actually read the autos for everyone bc i know i put my heart and soul into mine, and tears and sweat of course

did you guys all receive a confirmation email after your primary app before you got sent a secondary? i sent my primary like over a week ago and haven't heard anything from them.

Yeah, got one asking for my SSN. Since you only sent it a week ago, you still got some time to wait. UCSD screens too so that takes a while.

How did everyone structure their autobiographies?

OOS (AZ) with a 27 MCAT. Should I bother applying here? I LOVE La Jolla...🙁

I certainly don't want to tell you what to do -- I'm an OOS applicant as well. Instead, I figured I'd leave some stats here for you to consider.

The 10th %ile MCAT score for matriculants was a 30, last year
Last year, 20 OOS applicants ended up matriculating (compared to 105IS), and only 7.4% of OOS applicants even got interviews.

La Jolla is a beautiful place, but those stats are really working against applicants like you and me. Now, anything is possible, and if your application is exceptionally strong elsewhere, you could get an interview. And if you get an interview, you have the chance to blow everyone away. Even so, the numbers are still working against you.

Its your life, and your decision. I just thought I'd offer those two statistics to help educate your decision.

Good luck, in whatever you decide!

I have the reverse issue you do, my MCAT is above their average, but my GPA is below by a decent amount. I feel like I have a good explanation, and I did a post-bacc to support this idea. I'd say though you shouldn't pick schools because of the location, this isn't real estate. But, you will never know unless you try. So if you have $36 laying around that you don't feel bad about gambling with, then here's your shot! You might get a secondary!

One of the main reasons I am applying beyond the real estate is that I have two letter writers with ties to Scripps/local biotech companies + strong research ECs, so I figured it's worth a shot. It's doubtful they will send me a secondary but I allowed myself 2-3 "long shot" schools anyways and this is one of them. I hope you get a secondary! If we beat the odds and get IIs we should celebrate over coffee XD.

Definitely! Sorry from your post it didn't really click why you loved La Jolla so much, so I was oversimplifying things when I said 'real estate'. I have received a secondary and am working to try and give it all I've got! I have also applied to a lot of long shots as well so yes, if this happens, we shall celebrate! Good luck to you in whatever you decide!

Submitted this beastly autobiographical sketch! Is anyone sending in the payment via check? Maybe that's easier.. they said Tuesday though, right?

Edit: I realized I was a proponent for waiting, but I wanted to get this submitted, it's a relief!
