2014-2015 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Statement 1: I haven't interviewed at UCSD.
Statement 2: Today's the last day of interviews at UCSD.
Statement 3: I'm not currently in SD.
Conclusion: D:

UCSD was one of my dream schools! But maybe in 4 years. Congrats to all those who have been accepted, and to those who will soon get accepted too!

waitlisted.. congrats to all that have been accepted!

I have a question for former or current PRIME applicants. I interviewed for the Prime program but got waitlisted and was wondering, do I still have a chance to be in the prime program if I was admitted off the waitlist in May? Or would I really only have a shot at the main program?

Does anyone remember when Brian said they would contact waitlisters to ask if still interested and to ask for an update?

The financial aid application is supposed to be available on or after March 1, but the FA application on the UCSD website is still last year's version. Do we just have to wait longer for the aid application to come out?

For students on the waitlist, will they get to see a fin aid package if and when they get accepted to decide?

Do you guys know how the secondary application preliminary screening process works? I will be re-applying for the next cycle OOS with a significantly improved MCAT. I got a 25 the first time and I did not even receive a secondary. Do you know if the screening process uses the second or first MCAT score or both? I am afraid that I will be screened out due to my first low score. If anyone here is a re-applicant from OOS who has had success with UCSD, please let me know how you got in!

Hi Princess, I don't know the answer to that, but I did talked to some people this cycle who has solid MCAT's and decent gpas that did not get secondaries. I don't know why but this place is so quiet while we wait so I decided to share what I heard.

Woke up this morning to a post-waitlist acceptance! Thank you, UCSD. 🙂 Didn't know they did those early, though it sounds like it was so I could have the option to attend second look.
Congrats! Did you send any updates?

Has anyone been accepted to the MD program, but still waiting to hear back from MSTP?

I gotta ask, how do you read a match list? Do you have to know which programs are stronger than others automatically?

None at all! My impression from the waitlist email I got was that they wanted no contact until May, so I hadn't sent in anything.

Wow! Congrats! I've never heard of that happening. My only thought is that they didn't give out the number of acceptances they were shooting for the first time around. I wonder if we'll hear contact from admissions about updates soon ...

It's certainly possible that they didn't manage to hit the right numbers - the email said that they'd re-reviewed some files at the conclusion of interviews and were making a few acceptances now instead of after May 1, which would make sense in that case.

Do you guys know the cut-off values for MCAT scores for the preliminary screening process?

I seem to have misplaced the waitlist email...could someone kindly paste it here or summarize the details? I can't remember if we are allowed to send updates or letters of intent by a certain date or ever. Thanks a million!

The one I received originally says that they do not want updates/LOIs/etc. now, but that they will contact waitlisted applicants during the first week of May to see if they're still interested, and updates/LOIs/etc. could be sent then.

Did anyone from the September 23 interview group (waitlist pool) hear back from adcom by any chance? Thank you!

Just got my aid estimate by email – appreciate the fast turnaround, but it's looking like UCSD will be the same price as my OOS private schools... 🙁 So much for IS savings.

Ah well, hope you guys get good news! 🙂

This might have been answered, but I didn't see it. If you are on the wait list, when do you submit FAFSA for UCSD in case you get off?

before 3/1. You should do it asap if you're late.

Is there more than FAFSA for UCSD? I think I saw on their website that they have a fin aid questionnaire too but you have to have an acceptance to log in and fill it out.

Yeah, you get the link to the UCSD-specific FinAid packet once you've been accepted, but you can fill out FAFSA while on the waitlist.

Did anyone send updates to UCSD? OR call to ask about waitlist situation? If so could you let me know what their responses were. Thank you!!! And congratulations to all accepted!!!

I've called - no updates/LOI are desired until Brain sends out the "are you still interested email" sometime at the end of this month... other than that, I have no relevant information. 🙁

Did anyone see how many acceptances are out right now and how big the waitlist is?

Only way to guesstimate the # of acceptances is by looking at the Facebook group. I gave up on that though because there are a bunch of people in that group with profile pics wearing UCSD white coats...

Other people have made conjecture about the size of the waitlist on the various UCSD application threads. They say 1/2 interviewees are waitlisted so that's about 250-300 on WL and supposedly 30-50 come off.

Everyone tries on white coats though. In fact UCI interviewees try on white coat during the interview.

No, we didn't try on white coats at UCSD.

UCI is the only school I've heard of doing that. I find it hard to believe that anyone brought their friends to interview day at UCI and while trying on their white coat went outside and snapped a facebook pic in it....

The people in the white coats are likely current MS1s who are in the group as moderators or there to answer questions.

You don't try on a white coat at UCSD until orientation week.

On my interview day Brian told us that letters of intent are OK after we get the "are you still interested" email..

Now "David" is saying that letters of intent will not be accepted at all

Does that mean if you didn't get the email, most likely a rejection is on the way..?

it's only for people that were waitlisted already i think

I believe they said the bottom half of the waitlist would not be considered. Of course, the emails don't have to be sent out at the same time.

I think I heard somewhere that it is technically tiered…

Yes, something like this. I remember people on my interview day wondering how the bottom half would not be considered if the waitlist isnt ranked. Brian gave an answer like it was actually tiered.
