2014-2015 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes my family still resides in Kansas...I tried explaining that to them. Problem is the form only asks about where i work, where i live, where i spent last summer etc. Since i'm in a graduate program currently and it's not in Kansas my answers to those questions do not make a strong case for my residency. No where on the form does it ask where i grew up, where did i graduate high school from, etc.
The secondary asks you questions about the location where you consider Home, where you Graduated, where you feel most Impacted, etc. So maybe if you fill it out and your answers are Kansas based, then they will grant you residency status.

Thank you for the info! I'll do that!

Applying here...apparently OOS. I was born and raised in rural Kansas and left the state to attend a University. Now they won't consider me IS. Super sad i have no IS school now. I'm flabbergasted about the whole thing. Given the low number of OOS students they accept I wouldn't have applied had I known. I received the secondary last week and have been holding off sending it in until i could get a hold of someone to discuss my resident status and today i finally got through. All they had to say was i can fill out the appeal form, basically refused to discuss the situation. Debating whether i want to even turn in the secondary.
Who did you discuss that with?

Please note that Kansas has a very generous residency policy. They have a 60 month rule, where if you lived and studied in Kansas and left, you have a 60 month grace period where you can come back and be considered for in state residency. You just have to fill out an application, where they will ask you to prove you have significant ties to Kansas.

Does anyone know anything about selecting campus preferences. Is it allowed / possible to only select 1 campus for all 3 choices?

I don't have any desire to attend school in Salina or Wichita.

So, I've been working on my secondary and I'm getting hung up on these two questions. What did you guys write about? I feel like with so many questions, I have overlapping answers, so I'm having a hard time coming up with new things.

3. Describe any of your special interests and how you have developed knowledge in these areas. Give examples of your creativity: the ability to see alternatives; to take diverse perspectives; to develop varied or original ideas; or the willingness to try new things.

6. Describe your experiences facing or witnessing discrimination. Tell how you responded and what you learned from these experiences and how they have prepared you for your future in medicine.

Thanks for the response. Is it safe to assume that if I put KC as my 1st choice I wont be considered for the other two campuses?

My answer for 3 may be a bit unusual idk but they can't all be about classes/research etc...i talked about my passion for cooking. For 6 i spoke of a specific instance and how i reacted, also described how it ties to being an advocate for my future patients.

For 3 I talked about something a little unusual, but I talked about how I like to people watch and understand human dynamics/relationships. I touched on how I did research in my spare time on body language, and stuff like that.

For 6 I'm a URM so I've had plenty of experiences with discrimination so I just shared one of my experiences and how I handled being discriminated against

For 3 I talked about serving the underserved and targeting areas in medicine that have not been given the same amount of focus (ie. visual impairment/blindness vs cancer research)

For 6 I talked about witnessing physical abuse as a result of discrimination between political choice (Arab spring)

Awesome, thanks for both of your responses 🙂 I was going to go in a similar direction ScrubsLover9319, but I had already put it in the "what you like to do for fun" section, so I might just rework that fun section to make it work.

Where do I check the application status of my secondary? I submitted it today and can't find the status page.

sorry for ambiguity, to rephrase my question: does the school often have to resort to the lottery method or is there enough interest in the campuses to honor people's first choice?

I'm IS so I guess it doesn't matter, I'd just like understand what I'd be getting myself into first.

I put KC for all four years as my top choice. The only thing is, like 25% (or something like that) of people in KC have to go to Wichita for phase 2, and that's lottery (I don't really know of anyone who put this as top choice). I was picked to switch for phase 2 even though that wasn't top choice. However, anyone who gets in off the waitlist /alternates (they went up to 40 this year!) is automatically put into KC phase 1 / Wichita Phase 2. They take the spot of someone who had that originally, so they then have the choice to stay in KC for all 4 years (I was also offered this and accepted).

There are some people who put Wichita as top choice, but not enough to fill the amount there, so the remaining spots are also lottery.

To be honest, I've never heard of anyone going to Salina who didn't put that down, since there's only like 8 people and they're usually rural medicine program people.

So to answer your question, Yes, they do resort to lottery. They take your preferences into account at first, but it isn't enough to get the spots filled in Wichita, so a few people are sent there.

thank you for both of your responses - I have a better idea of how it works now.

I guess if I am lucky enough to get in I should just be happy to be in and not worry about the chance of two years in wichita.

Reapplicant here- bad MCAT and was told by dean that was the only issue. Graduated in May and retaking MCAT next month. Haven't been able to afford Amcas yet but it's pretty much ready to go. 🙁
Was invited to post bacc but didn't get accepted to that either, so hoping my MCAT improves enough they might at least waitlist me.

I hope you get accepted this year! I've read last year's application thread and was rooting for you. Hope we get to be classmates. 🙂

Does Kansas send out application complete emails?

Edit: Does anyone have something underneath the description column...

I don't know, but if it helps, I listed the KC campus as choice #4. 🙂 I'm really hoping to go to either Salina or Wichita for all four years, and that's on top of hoping I get admitted. 😀

I'm in Wichita and we only had one person that ranked KC as #1 but got sent here. Hope that helps clarify things! If you choose KC as #1 you'll probably get it (at least for 2 years).

Hey guys, I was wondering if someone can give me some input on question number 11!!! I had a teacher during my Junior year that discriminated against me. Long story short I ended up meeting with the dean of the school to try to resolve the situation but unfortunately my grades suffered. Now my question is how should I go about this ? Should I explain in depth or keep it short? Thanks

Focus on the emotion, not on the teacher. Discuss the steps you took to resolve it and how it relates to what you will need to do as a physician.

Thanks for the input. I am writing about how the personal growth I went through. I am just trying to find the best way to explain this situation without making it look like it was an excuse for a couple of bad grades.

Mine says
File Complete 8/04/2014, nothing in description there. but for letters of rec it has who they are from for the descriptor

Thank you! I actually ended up calling them today. No where did it say my file was complete so i was naturally anxious. However, I spoke with a very nice lady in admissions today who told me I was complete.

Where are you seeing this?

Where are you seeing this?

The home page or very first page after logging in to the secondary app. It also has titles of application center...message board... etc. The letters are directly under it.

My status page changed today to say "File Complete" hopefully that means IIs will be coming out next week or so

Regarding interviews: does anyone know if we're notified via email or snail mail if we're invited?

I'm showing they've received my supplemental application, fee, and 5 LOR's on 7/22/14 but I never received a "complete" e-mail. Is this normal?

I hope so. I never received a complete email and i called. They said i was complete.

It's email. Everything is pretty much electronic these days. I know their admissions decisions are sent via email too!

Oh, thats just what the Dean said they were doing this year so I wasn't sure. Oh well!
As I understand it they have to send the EDP decisions via email because snail mail may not make it by the 10/1/14 deadline. Regular decisions though will be through snail mail. Those who are awarded an EDP slot will still get a paper copy of their letter, it just comes a few days after 10/1/14.

Where at? There is no room for it...unless it's under the description column.

It's listed under the "Type of Material" column as "file complete" with dates under item date & date entered columns. The description column is blank.

How long after submission did this take to change from secondary received to file complete?

I submitted the day after the secondary came out. Complete on 8/20.

So I guess a little over a month? Give or take. If you are not an IS applicant, I honestly wouldn't expect a complete notification too soon. I don't even think they will interview OOS until January.
