2014-2015 University of Nebraska Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also how long after paying did you get a secondary?

I was impressed at their speed. I am OOS, and was verified July 20-something, received confirmation from UNMC 4 days later, their secondary a day later, and interview invite another day after that.

OOS, submitted secondary 7/14, rejected 7/16, appealed via email 7/16, and have surprisingly not heard back yet... I was expecting another rejection by now.
How did you approach the appeal email? I feel like this is kind of like a secondary in itself based on the questions. I got the axe this morning.

@ShabbaRanks

I first thanked them for the quick turnaround on reviewing my application then stated I wanted to appeal due to past family ties to the state/university. I then described those ties and that was about it. It wasn't too long of an email.

I never heard back regarding the appeal directly, but I received my II a week later.

ConsultantMD: as you stated, I used this appeal e-mail as a secondary application in a way.I started my appeal by asking the committee to reconsider their preliminary decision.
When I was initially rejected, I was given a list of prompts to address. I answered the • Past, present or future ties to Nebraska that are not readily apparent in your application, especially through family and • Overcoming adversity in your personal life or education/special attributes I gained from this adversity.. I feel I have a compelling reason for wanting to attend Nebraska, and I believe they appreciated my desire to practice in the Midwestern region.

I hope your appeal goes well! I don't know if this helps or not, but my appeal was around 2/3 page single spaced. Just show the committee why YOU should be given the chance to interview at UNMC and why you would like to attend their school.

Did you write 1 essay incorporating the themes or multiple essays (1 per prompt)?
Not sure how to tackle this...

I wrote one essay incorporating a few of the prompts. Fortunately, my story was able to flow and answer multiple questions.

Any OOS with IIs also apply to Creighton?? I'm thinking about sending Creighton an in the area email to see if they'll throw my app toward the front of their review line. Thoughts?

You guys weren't kidding about their fast turnaround. Verified 8/15, received payment form and secondary this morning, II this afternoon. I'm OOS, and this is my first II! Interviewing on Oct. 31st.

Like I posted, I thought I was a goner on 8/11, but I got an II after appeal! Thrilled!

Any thoughts on the easiest way to do the genetics requirement.. as a non-trad I did not do this...

If I were you I wouldn't complete genetics until you heard a decision of yes/no. I am in the same boat and am going to wait until a decision has been made post interview.

Agreed. I responded that I'm non-traditional and travel for work, so this would be hard to coordinate now. I wonder if they accept similar upper level courses?

Are you also applying to Creighton? I am trying to gauge whether or not to see if they're responsive to 'in the area' emails.

I am! They may be open to them, but if I were to send that email I feel I give off the impressesion that I am entitled to an interview. Does anyone else have any advice/ information on in the area emails? I would love to hear what others think.

Right, I know it's a delicate/hairy situation to navigate. I do not want to come of as presumptuous. I would probably frame it that I am going to be in the area on a certain date and that if I was being considered for an interview if I would love to schedule it the Saturday after (Creighton seems to have them on Saturdays) maybe for that reason because UNMC is on Fridays?

Hi everybody! I'm new to this thread but wanted to say hi. I'm IS, from Lincoln, and went to school in California and now live in Chicago. I have an interview for October 3rd. Anybody else have that interview date? It seemed like most people had October 10th. I look forward to meeting all of you and best of luck!!

I sent an in the area email earlier this week. I was basically very to-the-point about it. "My name is Omppu27, I applied to Creighton this cycle, I'm gonna be in the area for another II on this date and am leaving back home this date, if you are considering me for an II then it would be great if i could come at the same time, i understand if you can't, thanks."

Hi all I'm about to send in my appeal to my OOS rejection from Nebraska. I was wondering for anyone who has already done this if you just send it as an email in response to the initial rejection. Thanks for your help!

yes, just respond to the rejection.

How long from sending your appeal did it take to hear back from them?
Me too, no reply, but I got an invitation to access the online "secondary" which involved checking dates that I would be available for an interview... it was odd, because it didn't feel like I had ever gotten a formal II. Then I got the II confirmation yesterday. Mine timeline is below for your info

Appeal 8/25
Interview dates requested ("secondary") 9/10
Interview confirmation 9/15

Also, is there a med student overnight-like service prior to interviews at UNMC?

Thanks for answering my questions guys. I got rejected after the appeal. My stats were OOS 3.6/33mcat. Best of luck to you all!

I would avoid the ones right around UNMC (30th - 42nd street). While the campus is plenty safe, the hotels nearest it are pretty shady. I would say downtown (from 10th - 16th street) if you can afford it and want to check out the nightlife or else somewhere farther west on dodge (anywhere from 69th/72nd to maybe 108th) if you just want the cheapest option that is not going to be icky.

No problem - If you have any questions about the area just ask. I've lived here most of my life. 🙂

Hey guys! I'm interviewing Nov 7. Anyone else out there interviewing that day too? I'm from Salt Lake so Omaha will be completely new to me...
Do any of you know the email that we send our picture to? I remember reading it while I was filling out the secondary but now that info is gone. Let me know! Thanks.

I'm interviewing that day too!! I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area in California, and while I have some family in Omaha, I've never been there!! I looked up the weather though for the date and it looks a bit chillier than SF at that time... I'm down to meet up if anyone else is interested in exploring the city, I have no idea what to do while there, but I want to get a good feel for it.

I emailed my picture to: [email protected] because I over-excitedly raced through the secondary and forgot the email too..

I was also given a pre-secondary rejection. I sent an appeal e-mail which I thought was pretty good, but they still rejected me even after the appeal email. Oh well...

Thank you! I have a handful of friends from SF and I was just there. Are you buying your plane ticket for Thursday and leaving Friday? I would love to explore a new city with someone else. Message me and we can make plans?!

Feel free to pm me if ya'll need a tour guide. Lived here most of my life. 🙂 I'm in philly tonight for my drexel interview tomorrow and it would have been really nice to know someone from the area.

Hi everyone! I'm new to SDN, but I have grown up in Omaha and I'm here now getting my MPH at UNMC. I'm applying at the COM and my interview is October 10th! I'm a reapplicant, so I hope this cycle goes better than the last! Like the others, if you have any questions about Omaha or UNMC, I've been a student here for a year now, so just let me know! 🙂 good luck to everyone!

Does anybody have any info on how easy/hard it is to get residency in Nebraska? I would love to go here but the OOS cost of attendance is so brutal.

I wish I could help you out, not sure though. I don't even have any ideas where to start besides the google search which i'm sure you've done.

It would be fun to meet up! I know so little about Omaha. Maybe Thursday night Nov 7 after the interview? If you aren't jetting around the country on interviews 🙂

I've sorta been telling myself that it would be very hard to bring myself to go here if it was 70k/year for all four years. However, this is my only II thus far so I sorta don't wanna find out the answer to this until after I've interviewed...

Just wanted to throw this out there, i have heard on good authority that they offer substantial scholarships to OOS'ers to help with the cost as they are fully aware of the inhibitory nature of their tuition. According to the adcom very few in the class attend without scholarships but one must ask about them.
