Hello guys!

My name is Farhana. I am the current MS1 Class Secretary. We made a Facebook group for the accepted students! If you search UTHSCSA Medical Class Of 2019 on Facebook you can find it. No one had joined it yet so I thought if I post it here, it will draw more attention.

Just in case anyone had a similar question/concern about the South Texas campus and being an MD/MPH student...

If you plan to train in South Texas during 3rd and 4th year while pursuing an MPH degree as well, students have to complete the capstone course (MPH requirement) during their 4th year back in San Antonio.

This may not seem like a big deal to most but for those who may find the moving back and forth after 2nd then again after 3rd a problem, you may want to consider your ranking order between San Antonio and South Texas. Like I said, it doesn't bother me at all and many will find this a very small factor when considering ranking South Texas before San Antonio.

Emailed them before match and just thought I'd share. 🙂

I tried looking up the group but couldn't find it, do you have a link?

Word. The privacy settings might be making the group unsearchable. Shoot me a link and I'll for sure join.

My husband's an MS1 at UTHSCSA this year. sweetnothings35 was right that this is the 3rd year of the new curriculum, first of all. Also, there is a lot of feedback required both during and at the ends of each module. According to my husband, it can get pretty tedious, but the instructors actually do take into account students' comments, whether it's during that same year or if it is something they can change to help out the next year's class.

In regards to this, there is no way they'd change the curriculum again after only 3 years. First, that would just be pretty ridiculous considering the person they hired to design this curriculum style is the same person who designed BCM's current curriculum, and it's been really successful for them. Additionally, it is normal for USMLE Step 1 scores to drop from the previous year when implementing a new curriculum and that did not happen with UTHSCSA's new curriculum and that presents a very strong argument for keeping this style of curriculum even longer.

sabbear, if you could, could you elaborate a little on the group work and peer evaluations. Thanks! 🙂

During the preclinical years each module will have some TBL/PBL (whatever you want to call them) group work. Each week there will be one synthesis case which is like a case study of a case that represents what you learned that week, supposedly to tie it all together. These are also small groups each led by an attending. Depending on your group and the attending these groups can range from fantastic to a little tedious.

I personally really liked the synthesis cases, especially when we had an awesome attending. The TBLs, well, some were helpful others were not. Either way, at the end of each module you have to rate each member of the TBL, synthesis and the module as a whole and the attending who supervised your work. There are a lot of evaluations. In the long run, it's not (at least for me) a reason not to go here, but yes it does get tedious. Still, my class (current MS3) got through it just fine, and it's only getting better.

Students per tank?

I think Tipsy said pretty much everything I would about group work, based on what my husband's told me. The TBL/ synthesis days are definitely something that each person will have a different opinion on. It depends largely on who is in your group and the attending/ preceptor you have leading the discussion. Luckily, my husband gets along fairly well with his group members, but it's been hit or miss each module with the physicians.

On the peer (and other) evaluations, it's very much like in high school/ college when you rate group members at the end of a large assignment or fill out a class eval at the end of a semester. At the end of each module, each student also writes up a critique of sorts to send in to the module director(s) detailing specifics of what they liked/ did not like about the module and places that they could potentially improve. However, I am not quite sure on how much of this feedback is anonymous or not!

All of it is anonymous. The way I understand it, is there's only 1 person in the school administration that can see who wrote an evaluation and they have to request it. The only time they do so is if a student claims to have been discriminated against and it warrants an investigation into the issue.

Accepted! late update but I will be attending UTHSCSA, Prematched on dec 30th

I have not received a rejection letter yet from this school but their last interview date has passed. Is it possible they might interview again after match day or did my application get lost somewhere?

I'm really sorry, but I think you received a silent rejection.

Do any of y'all know how heavily UTHSCSA matches?

Dr. Jones commented on interview day that they typically try to fill half of the class through pre matches, but not everyone ends up follow through with the pre match offer.

Does anyone know how many they interviewed this year? I think on interview day he said it was going to be more than last year and around 1100 but I could be wrong. And I'm assuming they accept around 50-60%?

I interviewed on 12/1 and during his opening speech he stated that they were interviewing many more students this year, and the numbers he stated were "up to 1400, with 1100 to 1300 being in-state" if I remember correctly. I also remember telling my dad on the phone that the number of interviewees went up 50% this year (last year was 850 students). Discouraging when you have been crunching the numbers for a year prior to interviewing, and the first thing you hear on your interview day is that you are dramatically less likely to get an acceptance. Hoping for good news 2/2!

edit: It does seem like he backtracked on his original estimate of "up to 1400" after my interview day.

I don't think it was that many people interviewed at all.

Well all things are possible...
Umm...ok. I guess that's some dry humor. But anyways, at my interview he said about 1100 and the email about South Texas sent back in December said almost 1000. But regardless of how many were interviewed, all things are possible so getting accepted is achievable!

well there was at least 60 people at my interview, probably more... multiplied by a bunch of interview dates equals a bunch of interviewees equals likely a wait-list lol... but all things are possible

How about we worry about wait-lists after the match and try to remain a little positive and less pessimistic and negative. :eyebrow:

....Because I'm OOS and there is no such thing as the match and Dr. J said there were only 7 seats remaining in october so I am realistic and know without a doubt that I'm on a wait-list. Why don't you worry about yourself?

I replied to RugbyTX initially. You're the one who decided to include yourself and respond to MY post in regards to a post from ANOTHER person. Seems like you're letting off some OOS frustration or I don't know what.

I'm not frustrated at all. I wouldn't even attend san antonio over my current options. I was just making fun of your name. Then I shared my opinion that there was very likely 1000+ who interviewed based on my large interview group and most of them will be wait-listed since I'm pretty sure they don't have 1000 seats. But all things are possible....

Bye Felicia.

Do any of y'all know when UTHSCSA traditionally sends out their emails of acceptance on match day? I know some schools send them out at midnight, before the match....

Where have you heard that?? That would be amazing.

It was on some old sdn threads! I've been reading them in an effort to make myself less anxious for tomorrow, but it seems to have had the opposite effect haha. I know for sure that UTMB usually sends out emails at midnight 🙂

So now I have to wait till midnight AND 8!?! Let's just say I got a lot more nervous right about now hahaha

Haha I don't think UTHSCA does this though. I haven't found anyone at all in all the threads I've looked at that say that they got midnight emails! So we'll probably just have to be anxious till 8

TMDSAS just says this: "The deadline for entering or editing your school preference rankings has passed. Please return to this page after 8:00 AM on February 02, 2015 (Central Time) to view your match results." on their School Rank Preference page. I think that you'll just be able to go there anytime after 8 and it should show up. That's what my husband says he remembers doing, at least... Idk but good luck to everyone doing last minute checks! 🙂

Edit- it's during the *pre*match that they can send emails just after midnight. For match day, I don't think they're allowed to send them earlier. But again, that's just based off the hub's memory.
